“Apple launched its iPhone 4 in China Saturday morning, attracting a massive crowd of people to one of the company’s new stores in Beijing,” Michael Kan reports for IDG News Service.
“More than 1,000 people lined up outside Xidan Joy City shopping mall, where one of two new Apple stores opened in China Saturday. Some customers waited as long as two days to get their hands on one of the phones,” Kan reports. “Those who waited the longest were allowed to sleep overnight in the shopping mall’s hallway. While they waited in line Saturday morning, a few draped blankets around their bodies as others played cards or took photos of the large crowd with their cell phones.”
Kan reports, “But those in line said it was well worth it. ‘It’s like waiting in line to see a movie star,’ said 26-year-old Sun Jian Kuan, who is a systems engineer. ‘No phone can best the iPhone.'”

According to my daughter, living in Nanjing, the Chinese don’t like to line up for anything. This seems truly remarkable. Maybe they plan to resell at a premium.

OK, I fell for your bait. I read the comments on the 2003 article you referenced. No one received an email containing any discounts. In fact, the 10% discount sign was only put up 1 hour before the store opened, and not all stores had any discount at all. (Guess it was up to each individual store manager.) It seems there was nothing to draw the crowds in 2003 but the introduction of Panther.

Incase clear snap-on is beautiful.
Dropped a glop of almond butter onto top face of my iPhone 4. Sheesh! Oil damaged the top front speaker… Difficult to hear anything without earphones or speaker phone.
Went to apple store genius bar to see about cost of repair. They gave me a NEW PHONE FOR FREE !
I left the store completely shocked… Apple continues to earn my lifelong allegiance. Great products, great service, great support.
