<etymological nitpick>Depends on what they mean by “size”, Since 5″ is the diagonal measure, the Streak’s screen is just a bit more than half the diagonal measure of the iPad’s 9.7 screen, which makes it a little more than 1/4 the “size” – if the word is taken to mean “area”. </etymological>
But then, size isn’t everything.
Any “7-inch” (or 5-inch) tablet is intentionally designed to be different enough from iPad to deflect direct comparison. It’s not an “iPad killer,” it’s an iPad avoider. No competitor is remotely prepared (in hardware or software) to take on iPad.

It is like macabre entertainment watching companies marching behind one another toward the cliff. Everybody knows what the eventual outcome would be, but these *brilliant* business minds leading the U.S. industries that are supposed to get us out of a economic downturn cannot seem to come up with any other ideas even if their lives depend on it. I started to laugh but then felt an overwhelming desperation for their employees.
This Dell thingie is irrelevant, but what do you guys think about the idea of a 7-inch iPad?

I think an iPad that size would be great. Not that I want it to replace the 9.7-inch model, but in addition. I could see myself with both, frankly. Maybe leave the big boy home and take the smaller one when I need it outside.
Who in their right mind would say to themselves, “hmmm a Dell tablet or the iPad”, boy that’s a tough one.
OK Mikey, let me know how that works out for you.
BTW, in planetary terms, Dell is about the size of Earth. Your biggest problem is that Apple – relatively – is nearly the size of Jupiter.
But I’m sure you’re not worried about that in any way whatsoever.

If a theoretical 7″ish iPad had big storage, like ±100 GB, I’d buy one for my car. I can see that as the perfect music solution. But I don’t see it being more useful to carry around. My iPad is the perfect size – any smaller and it would be useless for magazines and less useful for games.
Dell fires up the copy machine yet again. Funny how the copies are so inferior to the originals, though.
When a company has to use the name of a competitor’s product in their own product’s introduction, it only states that said company is looking for attention that they normally would not get.
I don’t think Dell is under any illusion that this tablet is going to be any competition for the iPad at all. This move, like all the “iPad killers” from other companies, is a desperate attempt to remain relevant. They see how the iPad has shaken everything up, and feel they to have make some show of trying to compete or risk having investors abandon them entirely.
It’s sad when you think about it. Even sadder to think that someone somewhere will buy the piece of junk.

Once again MDN interprets “we’re launching a touch screen device” as “we’re going to kill the iPad/iPhone”. Presumably, the gross exaggerations of the claims are meant to make dell and whoever look sillier when it doesn’t happen.
Dell tries to excite the WS guys with a “maybe someday” announcement.
I think that is counterproductive.
If you announce it, give a date a week out when you will be shipping or SHUT UP UNTIL THEN.

The sad thing is that most of these tablets will run Android. I would have been very interested in them otherwise. Companies that chose Android only does so because it’s a fast way to get something on the market, not for the love of the system. It’s really sad.

I have a feeling that all these guys are choosing 7″ because that’s the limit that google is putting on android machines. I think google wants anything bigger to run chrome. (speculation?)
It’s actually great for apple because all the “competitors” will be knocking each other out on the 7″ battle field, leaving the 9.7″ field wide open for iPad.
Meanwhile, i’ve always thought Chrissy gets way too much credit on this forum, but that reference to Mr Dell’s physiognomy is highlarious.

Clearly, Apple has the lead with the iPad, but what are other manufacturers going to do? Sit back and hope it disappears?
So, Dell&Co; will need to start somewhere and – imho – a 7″ device has a far greater chance than a direct iPad-Copy.
The format fits for many application. The iPad is fine around the home or whenever you carry a briefcase with you, but enroute. it is quite frankly too large and way too ostentatious.
The Streak is actually quite nice and Android will have a massive following in Europe, where Linux, if you recall, also had far more impact that over there.
It is already quite capable and is bound to improve.
I have been using Macs since 1984, am writing this on a 2010 MBP and own an iPhone …. but the rah-rah bull that this forum consists of mainly, is certainly a joke.
There is a life outside Apple …. go get one!

I suspect that everyone outside of Apple is going to a 7″ screen at least in part because Apple has already bought all the 10″ screen capacity available for the next couple of years.
