“Analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro with Susquehanna Financial Group said in a note to investors on Wednesday that checks with overseas suppliers indicated Apple is prepared to build 3 million CDMA iPhones in December, keeping the device on track for an early 2011 launch,” Hughes reports. “That would put total GSM and CDMA iPhone production for the quarter at between 21 million and 22 million.”
Hughes reports, “For the current quarter, suppliers reportedly said that Apple is set to build between 18.2 million and 18.4 million GSM-only iPhones. Fidacaro noted those numbers are ‘well above investor expectations,’ because display panel constraints with LG Display have been resolved.”

All the AT&T bashing. I switched from Verizon to AT&T in 2007 for the iPhone after being a Verizon/Bell Atlantic Mobile Customer since 1994. I have never had a problem with AT&T service and don’t have any problems now. AT&T service is equal to what my Verizon service was. Having had both I don’t understand the AT&T complaints.

Actually, I take part of that back. Certainly, those receiving poor service have a right to bash AT&T.
Customer/carrier conflicts, mistakes and overcharges occur, customers should be able to take their iPhone and app investment to use on another carrier.
Because the way it is now, when the customer swears off the sole carrier, they are also swearing off Apple too.
This smug attitude by Apple will only last as long as market saturation, when the sales start slowing they will need to reconsider their mistakes if they want to remain relevant in the market.
RIM on the other hand is the largest smart phone seller because of multi-carrier options.
Google’s Android, also multi-phone/carrier is in third place in market share, expected to surpass Apple’s second place only one phone, only one carrier option in a few short years.

Ever since iPhone 4, ATT started to get arrogant and dismissing in customer service…kind of like Adobe in bad attitude and lack of accommodation. They certainly reversed the standard they adopted and took with Apple users till now.

The quality of service one gets from ANY of the carriers is not universal. I’ve got family and friends that have switched to ATT because the Verizon service they receive sucks. Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.
Whatever, Apple is NOT going to produce a handset (CDMA) that will be obsolete in less than 2 years. It would be a horrible misuse of development resources, something Apple isn’t know for.
Panic time for the cretins of WS. I knew they would rehash the vz iPhone release. The android selling like hotcakes is just not working. Trying to jawbone demand ultimately fails.
Next up will be schumer and his ilk investigating apple for not producing a phone for vz. Too bad the elections are in the way.

It will probably be a decade before we see LTE-only devices on Verizon. The CDMA iPhone will not be obsolete in two years.
But even if a CDMA iPhone DID become obsolete that quickly, in those two years we could be talking tens of millions of CDMA iPhones sold, tens of millions of new customers now attached to the iTunes-iPhone app ecosystem that would have likely purchased Android devices instead. I think that’s a damn worthy investment, and Steve will show you that he agrees when the Verizon/Sprint iPhone is unveiled on a stage somewhere in California.
While living in an area with great AT&T reception I had no problems, now I’m living and working in areas that have no AT&T reception (and poor ‘partner network’ reception), I’d love a Verizon iPhone, I’d actually have reliable service out here.

You’re right, it IS the PC/Mac war all over again. Apple makes the lions share of the profits, while the PC/Android vendors race to the bottom. Poor Apple, if they just would have listened to Bizzaro, they would have 80% market share and no profits.
CDMA does not exactly require any major re engineering. The technology has been around for almost a decade, every single major cellphone maker has been building phones with it, and there are several chip makers making CDMA chips. This re-engineering is relatively trivial, and I’m sure Apple has done it long ago.
That said, if this rumour is correct, those CDMA iPhones are more likely for the Chinese market.
As for the US market, before they even begin considering another carrier, they need to ramp up the production of their GSM model for the current carrier. Only after they finally meet the demand of the current single carrier market, then can they begin to think about expanding to T-Mobile (and, possibly, later, even Verizon).
Why do people seem to not want iPhone on other carrier? It would be great. Apple could rule the world lol. But serially not everyone wants AT&T and they have poor 3G coverage. Look at the map. Anytime your outside of a major metro area they don’t cover. And even their voice service is lacking. My grandparents live in an area that verizon and cellular one have good service but AT&T is inn existent really. Like 1 or 2 bars at best and which talking yiu will lose signal.
Apple needs to be on all 4 major us carriers. There still is cellular one and us cellular though as well I mean if i were apple id be putting my phone on every carrier i could. Id even sell refurb or last years model to cricket, boost and other small carriers and then offer a refurbished 3G model for the prepaid services that are Gsm that you get at target and walmart.
I know there have to be tons of people who cant get att and the like but have to get a prepaid service but still want an iPhone.

Those squealing “AT&T apologists” have never struck first; they have always come back as a response to those AT&T bashers (look at this thread, above).

It would be great for all carriers to get the iPhone but CDMA sucks. Youcannot call and browse at the same time. Also, all the press releases are lies intended to limit or mitigate iPhone sales. When the jawboning about great droid sales no longer is effective they fall back on the wait a few months and vz will have the iPhone.

Who th F cares about verizon iPhones. Why does everyone after four years now keep talking about this. Who Cares! If you’re not happy with Att switch. Quit gripping about service. One other thing is strange here. Everyone seems to be harping about Apple’s carrier exclusivity in the US, as if this is something very strange, unusual and unique to the iPhone.
The reality is, other than some “dumb”-phones (and Blackberries) out there, pretty much every single smart phone out there is exclusive to its carrier. A month ago, I have compiled a list of Android phones offered (back then) by US carriers:

It’s a little more complicated than that, Predrag.
Above all else, it’s a fact that you can get the full Android experience on any US carrier, period.
But many of those phones are clones with different names or so similar that they might as well be the same device. The Samsung Captivate, Fascinate, and Galaxy and Galaxy S are the same phone skinned for different carriers. The Galaxy S, a Sprint exclusive, added a slideout keyboard and fills the role of the Motorola Droid that’s on Verizon. The Motorola Droid X is fairly similar to the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint, with a few minor tradeoffs between them, but they’re pretty much the same full touchscreen Android device. Nobody is on the market for a Verizon Motorola Droid X who would feel slighted at having to “settle” for an HTC EVO 4G on Sprint, and vice versa.
Bottom line is that it would only be comparable if there were multiple iOS devices on different carriers, and someone complained that the iPhone itself was an exclusive. In that case the pain would be less severe. But it’s a single device and the fact remains that the iOS 3G experience is limited to one US carrier.
I must admit, R2, your argument holds water quite well. I would probably re-frame it a bit differently: none of the mobile phones out there has a compelling user experience by itself, regardless of what carriers would want people to thing. We see powerful advertising for Droid by Verizon; for Evo 4G by Sprint, and so on. But in reality, ordinary person will never walk into a Best Buy mobile store and ask for a Evo 4G, or a Droid X. They will all likely ask for an iPhone, and if they can’t get it, they’ll accept any (multi)touch-screen smartphone that the salesman is able to dump on them, and this will almost always be one of those Androids.
As for the ‘full Android experience’, I don’t have any personal experience with that, but from what I’ve heard, Verizon has worked hard to make that experience as little Android and as much Verizon as possible. I don’t know to what extent the ‘android experience’ on other carriers has been supplanted by carrier offerings.
I have had a wonderful AT&T experience. I came over from Verizon during iPhone 1G launch. I will NEVER go back to them.

@Gregg Thurman please correct me if I am wrong. Didn’t AT&T make a 2G iPhone when it first came out in 2007? THEN in less than the 2 years you feel would be a waste came out with the 3G model? In 2007 2G was a bigger dead end and 3G was
lightyears past where LTE is now or is going to be in 2011. Sure they were all GSM phones but do you really think Verizon is shutting down CDMA once the first LTE tower goes up?

Frankly, I’m tired — and by now, far too cynical — to put any credence in anything: the “Verizon iPhone” rumors come out like clockwork, and are thus obviously part of an agenda to try to freeze defections.
This one simply isn’t credible because of the claimed timeline of “…for early 2011…”. Think about it this way: if Steve Jobs was really launching the Verizon iPhone, do you really think that he would choose to do so right after the big holiday buying season?
YMMV, but I kind of suspect that Steve is smart enough arrange for it to be in time to reap those holiday sales. As such, when we look at what such a rumor accomplishes, the only thing left on the plate is to freeze Christmas/Holiday sales – – – golly, how convenient.
Thus, I ain’t buying it. The only thing that will convince me otherwise would be a statement from nothing less than Steve Jobs himself.

Maybe no one else on this forum remembers the All Things Digital conference a few months ago. Check it out. Steve said of Adobe, “We look for technologies that are in the Spring and are ascending. Adobe had its time.” Same can be said of CDMA.

It’s like this. I just wish people would stop talking about verizon getting the iPhone. Who cares? I don’t give a shyt. Why do people that complain about AT&T stay with AT&T? If people aren’t happy switch to verizon and get a droid. People knew from day one that apple and AT&T had a five year exclusive deal. So why do we have to hear all the whining for four years from stupid people that wish there was a verizon iPhone. So if verizon does get the iPhone people are start complaining about something else or wishing there was something better. It never ends. People will never be happy.
