“Critics scoffed when Steve Jobs said he would ship ‘tens of millions’ by Dec. 31,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “How does… Steve Jobs deliver on his promise?”
MacDailyNews Take: With ease.
“First of all, it’s entirely possible that Jobs could do it with the iPhone 4 alone. Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster — to pick on just one analyst — estimates that Apple will sell 11 million iPhones this quarter and 11.4 million next quarter,” P.E.D. reports.
“The new iPod touch, which began shipping this week, will almost certainly put FaceTime over the top. Apple will probably ship a couple million this month, and Munster estimates that it will sell 10.5 million in the quarter that starts Sept. 26,” P.E.D. reports. “The iPad probably won’t help much, even if — as one dubious rumor has it — Apple manages to ship a few of the camera-ready units before the end of the year “But if FaceTime does come to iChat before Christmas, that would allow Jobs to include in his total all the iMacs, MacBooks and MacBook Pros Apple ships in calendar 2010 — an estimated 13.4 million units, according to Munster.”
P.E.D. reports, “Grand total: roughly 48 million FaceTime devices.”

Umm, close to 50 mil in 6 months? Boom, baby!
MaWo: ‘interest’. As in, “What Apple’s customers have…”
There not selling many iPhone 4 here in Canada. There not bringing in enough stock to match the demand. I just spent two hours in the line-up at my local store, only to be told there would be no iPhones today. I’ve been trying for two weeks. One third of the days there have been no iPhones in stock. Two thirds of the days the line is so long and only a handful (maybe 100) get a phone. This is getting ridiculous. There are no iPhones available in Canada.
Oops! They’re. Sorry, language police.
Ready to buy my second iPad as soon as the FaceTime 3G model ships.
And…boom.
Well
There is no question that Apple has become a force to recon with in the wireless market.
@MDN,
What’s with all of the foreign language advertising?????
@ cptnkirk
Agreed. Our Rogers corporate rep has told us it will be mid October before they have phones for us. We put in our upgrade request right at the launch.
Crazy. Surely Apple can ship more phones to Canada to clear the huge back orders.
I still believe that a FaceTime enabled iPad will come out in November.
Also, FaceTime is set to become its own verb, as in, “Yo, FaceTime me later!”
“Yo, FaceTime me later!”
Or better yet, “Yo baby, it’s Time you sat on my Face!”
Bet you’ve used that one before, Cubert.
I still haven’t used it because I don’t have anyone to Facetime call yet. Is this what it feels like to own a Zune?
So, who’s going to be first on MDN to offer to FaceTime C1?
If you have no one to FaceTime with, just call apple. 1-888-FACETIME

Smile for the camera…say “cheese”.

Not your cup of tea, but you know, Rush has a FaceTime iPhone!
No iphone 4’s in Canada.
‘Due to overwhelming demand’ etc. from Rogers.
Steve – we need iPhone 4 up here!
Or, you can add it to iChat in Snow Leopard so we can use Apples camera that comes with every laptop. (and iMac)
Bad BluefinPro, bad! No biscuit!
So, Microsoft now has FuneralParadeTime, built into Windowsphone7thingy.
They will sell 48.
“The Other Steve”
That’s what I was thinking. Apple should be able to ad Facetime to any Snow Leopard machine and possibly any Leopard machine. Apple has had the webcam on their laptops and iMacs for ages.
C1… FT me buddy!
Done!
My review after a call from Jim – SWEET!!! Nice video, easy to use, works pretty much exactly like you expect it to. You can switch cameras to show off your surroundings, sound quality is good (I used the speaker, didn’t get a chance to try with headphones but I assume it would be better). Not much else to say..
IT JUST WORKS.

I can’t believe you picked Jim – TIV over Rush!
Rush technically can’t call me – it’s part of the restraining order.
The Other Steve, Synthmeister:
If you read the article, that is precisely what it suggests — adding FaceTime functionality to the Mac.
On another subject, does anyone here have actual (or reasonably close estimates of) numbers for the Mac OS X out there? How many current users in total? If they sell an average of 12 million Macs in a quarter, that would make it about 50 million per year, and since Macs are on an average 5-year replacement cycle, that would imply up to 250 million active Macs in service around the world. Does this estimate hold any water?
