“For centuries Fenchurch Street in the heart of the City has bustled with armies of insurance brokers clutching their trademark slipcases, the flimsy leather sheaths that bulge with bundles of papers,” Paul J. Davies reports for The Financial Times.
“But the traditional case could soon be superseded by the latest high-tech gadget,” Davies reports. “Lloyd’s of London will this month test whether Apple iPads could replace the paper slips containing all the information on bespoke policies sold at the 300-year-old insurance market.”
Davies reports, “Three brokers involved in the iPad trial – Marsh, Cooper Gay and RK Harrison – hope that Apple’s tablet computer will be able to carry all the documents that a broker needs to negotiate with underwriters, allowing both parties to review documents and annotate them where required… About 30 brokers will initially take part in a trial expected to last about three months, although others are expected to join in once it gets under way.”

But, but the iPad is a media consumption device.
But, iPad’s antenna is problematic too
And it has dangerously sharp edges that could slice fingers and it’s glossy screen is useless and it’s ral battery life is 5 hours and it’d only a big iPhone…
I love it!
@FUD
Don’t worry, they’ll insure their own fingers against cutting by the iPads sharp edges
3 brokers hope that an iPad will be able to carry all the documents that a broker needs…are you kidding me? Will a few dozen text based forms and contracts have fit into 64 GB? They have to test THAT for 3 months?
Now that’s a good advertisement: no more paper cuts when you use the iPad!
All kind of things are being tried – and then abandoned – with the revolutionary gadget.
What do they need to test? How much easier it is to take an iPad over paper.
The only thing is there is no filing system so exactly how you get your docs onto it
The challenge the app creators are facing is how to make sure the small print cannot be enlarge enough to be read comfortably.
We are doing our 1st trial with the iPad this Tuesday!
We run an excursion business, up to now we print out a manifest for the Captain (in numbers) showing the names, total price, deposit received, and balance due. he checks them off, collecting cash or making a note to charge the CC on file. After they set sail he calls in the ones using CC, and at the office we re-run.
We will have the manifest on the iPad, he will collect cash, re-run CC’s or use a virtual terminal if they have a new one all from the iPad

@ Failed bit
Just like a lot of wit is being tried – and then failed – around here.
I think this is great, but better to wait till November when iOS 4.2 comes out with the ability to print
@MacDust: You can print now if you have the right printer and one of the Print apps. Or you can use HP’s new “email” printers, where you just send your document to the printer’s email address and they print. There are ways…
the challenge here is how to get the brokers to give up their iPads in 3 months
They may also find uses they had never thought of – like terrorizing customers with photos and videos of disasters!
@HotinPlaya…am feeling a bit envious while caribbean daydreamin’.
