“One-third of the people who have downloaded iTunes 10 have joined Ping,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services, in the press release. “As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing.”

Ping lets you follow your favorite artists such as Lady Gaga, Coldplay, U2, Jack Johnson, Yo-Yo Ma and more, to see what they’re up to, check out photos and videos they’ve posted, see their tour dates and read comments about other artists and albums they’re listening to. In addition, you can post your thoughts and opinions, your favorite albums and songs, the music you’ve downloaded from iTunes® and the concerts you plan to attend.

  1. This should help all the new artist that the old crew seem to believe are getting ripped in the new age. Since Ping did not come into existence until the age of digital downloads- I guess the old crew would have banked big time.

Now the new kids can see and know when and where Their band will be as long as they are playing! Nice.

  2. “I think it’s a great communication
tool for music artist to connect with
    their fans.”

if by connect you mean, sell tickets, albums and singles.. yea ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  3. Oh yeah? Where are they? The only 3 people I see are Rick Rubin, some DJ, and some lady who owns a record store…and 14 artists to follow, all of which suck to varying degrees.

I love all things Apple, but right now, Ping is useless for me.

    I’m still on it though!

  4. I joined Ping, but not many bands I like are on Ping atm, which is to be expected, as it is new.

Wish I didn’t have to open iTunes to access it though, as I only really use iTunes to sync my iPod. I use Spotify to listen to music.

  5. I’m a fanboy, but I haven’t yet had much joy with Ping. I like more than 3 genres of music, so that’s a bit frustrating. Ping still won’t let me email invites to any friends or family. I’ve searched for all my favourite artists in my iTunes library, but apparently none of them has signed up for Ping yet. Ah well, I’m sure things will get better. At least it’s now allowed me to add a photo to my Profile! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  6. Ping at this time is merely “potential”. It’s a foundation. The question is whether it would serve a useful purpose if it did just what you wanted it to do. If you think it could, give it a shot and try to shape it into something special. Ping can only be as good as the participants.

  7. I downloaded iTunes 10 onto my Macbook first day, and also immediately activated Ping. I’m thinking about deactivating Ping because as of right now it’s got so little to offer me. I wonder how many others are considering opting back out, and will the numbers be updated to reflect that.

On another note, does anyone else find it odd that the minimize, maximize, and close buttons now break away from the OSX standard and run vertical on the screen? I’m not bothered by it necessarily, just finding it an odd tweak.

Personally, I hate it. So, defaults write com.apple.iTunes full-window -1

  9. As a musician, I have a great circle of friends to recommend new music. I used to do this via email, but this is far more efficient. For real music fans, this is pretty revolutionary. Forget about the artists you want to follow. I think that’s only going to serve some. For me, its the people with great taste recommending music that makes it work so well. On the first 3 days I spent about $100 on music.

    well earned Apple, well earned..
