iPhone jailbreakers call it quits on iOS 4.0.2

Apple Online Store“Score one to Apple. Leading iPhone jaibreak hackers the Dev Team have decided not to bother trying to make an exploit that will jailbreak iPhones running the 4.0.2 firmware, claiming that they don’t want to be drawn into a game of ‘cat and mouse’ with Apple,” Electricpig reports.

“In a statement on their blog, the Dev Team have announced that they will not be providing any further patches for the 4.0.x branch of the iPhone’s firmware, preferring instead to just work on a hack for version 4.1, which is currently in beta,” Electricpig reports. “‘With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the ‘cat & mouse’ with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR [the computer from WarGames], ‘the only winning move is not to play.””

  1. It’s certainly not the first time they’ve focused on upcoming releases and skipped over what’s currently available.

This makes perfect sense. The whole point of 4.0.2 was to patch the hole that was used in jailbreakme…not necessarily to prevent jailbreaking but to patch a potential security threat.

However, if you already jailbroke, you were able to patch the hole before 4.0.2 came out and therefore would see no benefit to upgrading to 4.0.2.

Releasing a jailbreak tool for 4.0.2 would do two things:
    1) Serve a fraction of people who upgraded to 4.0.2 and are now interested in jailbreaking.
    2) Expose the method they plan to use for jailbreaking 4.1 which is still in beta and if the method is exposed Apple could patch it before release.

It seems better to let the people who have 4.0.2 wait until 4.1 comes out before releasing the new jailbreak than to lose a method of jailbreaking.

  2. It should be score for jail breakers dev team. If it wasn’t for them the major exploit could of done more damage to apple’s rep. It was the dev team’s work that pushed apple to release 4.0.2. A fix which you can do yourself if you have jail broken phone. 4.0.2 was only released to close that hole and that hole only, no major upgrades or long list of fixes.

Oh by the way. Miwi is worth the cost if you only have wifi iPad. Saved me $130 plus monthly fees.

  3. How exactly is this a score one for apple?

4.1 will be released in a matter of a few weeks, possibly sooner.
and 4.0.2 is a useless update for anyone who is jailbroken. The one and only exploit it patches can be patched through Cydia.

Fact is, they probably have an exploit already that is likely to also be present in 4.1 and don’t want to reveal it before 4.1 comes out so it doesn’t get patched.

Please explain to me again how the dev team loses by not doing unnecessary work?

  5. The headline is very misleading.

It makes you believe that they’re done jailbreaking, when in fact, they’re not.

They know 4.1 is coming, and they have the beta, so that is what they are working on.

    Nothing to see here…
