Apple begins catching up to demand: iPad and iPhone supply constraints finally starting to ease

Apple Store“LG Display is the company behind the iPad’s 9.7-inch LCD screen,” Eric Zeman reports for InformationWeek. “According to a new research note from Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, the company must have made some changes. The wait time for new iPads has dropped from seven to 10 days (when ordered from the Apple Web site) down to three to five.”

“LG hasn’t confirmed if it boosted production, but the reduced wait times suggest as much,” Zeman reports.

“As for the iPhone, Kumar believes the wait will be significantly less by September,” Zeman reports. “If ordered today, customers wanting an iPhone 4 will have to wait three weeks for the device to ship.”

  1. When I was getting my mom’s iPad, I had to drive to a best buy that was out in the middle of nowhere. And even then, they only had one in stock, the highest-end 64GB 3G. I didn’t want to spend that much, but didn’t want to wait either, so I was just like, oh well, she was a good mom, she’s worth it.

She loves it by the way. She has always hated computers. Like many in her generation, she never really “got” the mouse or dragging windows all over the place, but she almost never puts her iPad down. She said it’s the computer she’s been waiting for her whole life.

  2. These “analysts” basically wrote a “research note” by going to Apple’s online store and looking at the current delay before shipping, then including some previously reported quotes from LG. Wow, nice work…

  3. @ Touch

The “3 to 5 days” is for iPad, not iPhone. The article even says, “If ordered today, customers wanting an iPhone 4 will have to wait three weeks for the device to ship.”

  4. @Ffff, that’s something the tone-deaf geeks seem incapable of understanding. We see commenters all the time smugly saying that the iPad can’t do this or that, so nobody will buy them. It never occurs to them, despite reports to the contrary from some very smart people, that not everyone is a geek, that *most* people don’t care about specs and power-user capabilities, that *most* people have a fairly limited set of needs for their computer, and that for *most* people, the iPad meets their needs perfectly, without all the hassles of OS setup and maintenance.

Even Apple doesn’t claim the iPad is for everyone. It’s an 80/20 thing. 80% of people can probably get by just fine with the iPad *most* of the time. And Apple will be happy to sell iPads to 80% of the world.

  5. Demand leveling off? Yes.

Could be that, in the case of the iPhone4, the hysteria is over and the reality of poor performance and fewer features than competing phones has set in and,

In the case of the iPad, the revolutionary realization that you don’t have much use for the gadget has been experienced.

And, yes you flamers, I do own an iP4 (that’s how I know of its disappointing shortcomings) and I do not own an iPad – couldn’t figure out from day one why I would whip out the plastic for the glass slate gizmo.

  12. @S&D,

The article says nothing about demand leveling off. If you’ve got some other source for that notion, ante up. Otherwise keep your self-serving delusions to yourself, dipshit troll.

  13. @ Supply & Demand

    Back again, obvious troll…?

    > And, yes you flamers, I do own an iP4 (that’s how I know of its disappointing shortcomings)

Once again, please explain why you have not (or did not) returned your iPhone 4. Only a moron would pay at least $200 plus at least $60 per month for device with such “disappointing shortcomings” and decide NOT to return it for a full refund within 30 days.

  14. I doubt iP4 demand is leveling off since the internatinal rollout won’t be completed starting until the end of September. Then you’ve got your Holiday bump in demand. Then a White bump in January. 64GB model in February. 

  15. @ FutureMedia

    > I doubt iP4 demand is leveling off…

Yes, because there are two ways to balance supply with demand. The SECOND is to increase supply. That is obviously what is happening, for both iPad and iPhone 4. It’s not there quite yet, but it will be nice to have inventory at all the stores (online and physical), instead of waiting lists.

  16. I stood in line in NYC 3 days this week for an iPhone 4. Each day I got there around 4am (for real). Each day I saw over a hundred people, all Asian and most in groups of FAMILIES, and many were there all 3 days! Several of them got phones at least two of those days by the way, but that’s a different issue…you can draw your own conclusions.

The 2nd day, while waiting in line (sensing that I would be out of luck that morning) I made an online order on the Apple Store. The shipping date given was 9/8. This morning upon reading a forum on a different Apple fan site, I made an online order with ATT, and MY PHONE SHIPPED TODAY TO BE DELIVERED TOMORROW!
