RUMOR: Next-gen Apple TV to be renamed iTV, drop 1080p, run iOS and gain App Store access

Apple Store“A new report says the next update to Apple TV will adopt the name iTV, while also dropping support for 1080p video output to standardize on 720p HDTV,” Daniel Eran Dilger reports for AppleInsider.

“Continuing upon the Engadget rumor that the next generation Apple TV will move from a scaled down Mac running Front Row software to an iOS device that works like a screen-less iPod touch, the latest wrinkle says the new model will get its former ‘iTV’ codename,” Dilger reports. “Apple’s chief executive Steve Jobs originally introduced the device (a few months before it shipped) under the iTV name while noting that the company was still looking for a permanent name. Apple TV was subsequently released as Apple announced the iPhone in early 2007.”

“By converting Apple TV into an iOS device, the company could erect a third new wing of apps in iTunes. The popularity of iPad (which has collected a portfolio of over 20,000 apps in just a few months) suggests tremendous potential for a TV-oriented iOS product,” Dilger reports. ” The shift toward a smaller, cheaper device that uses network streaming rather than Apple TV’s hard drive for local storage also likely necessitates using the same video output of iPhone 4 and iPad, which is 1024×768 (or perhaps the very similar 720p HDTV resolution). Apple sells HD content in iTunes as 720p.”

  1. What a crock of sh-t. Who the f-ck wants 720p. I’ll chock this one up to Engadget being misled because if Apple is that egotistic to drop 1080p for their own chip, they could shove it up their Ass. This is stupid, exclusively stupid news! One day the Apple TV will actually advance with the fantastic AMD Fusion an now this garbgage? If Apple does this they should call it phone4TV because a TV is about TV, Movies and Games. What part of that marketing message doesn’t Phil Schiller get! What the hell! Get serious, man. What a joke and I’m not quite sure to laugh at Engadget or Apple. That’s 10 steps back.

  2. 720p is indistinguishable from 1080p on displays under 55 inches, so for the vast majority of buyers such a move would be meaningless.

    Unfortunately, three fscking geeks who live in their parents’ basement (one of whom is named “Joe”) will scream so loudly that MacDailyNews’ aforementioned SS Much Ado About Nothing will have to dock there while they squawk and sputter until the world forgets about them again as they’re buried under a deluge of millions of iTV units sold.

  3. About time. AppleTV was over priced for what it offered and if they can bring thi in at the cost or less of a gaming console they’ll have the industry locked up soon as well! Imagine buying console games direct at minimal cost/delay for the consumer and then taking that game with you on whatever device you want. Now we just need an App store conger specifically for Macintosh Computers!!

  4. @Joseph,

    You can already control the Apple TV with iOS devices using the free ‘Remote’ app by Apple.

    @annonymous coward,

    Your handle would have been more app if it were ‘anonymous shark-jumping idiot’

    @Joe,

    Calm down… step away from the ledge. This is a rumor, and like any rumor, must be taken with a grain of salt. If this particular rumor ends up bearing any fruit, then Apple will fail to gain any further traction in the living room, and they will either adjust or concede that part of the CE market. Honestly a Mac Mini is seeming more and more like the sensible replacement anyway.

  5. The output of the current Apple TV is only 720p now!!

    All the movies and TV shows from iTunes are 720p. Most HD movies on cable/satellite are 720p too (the bandwidth can’t handle 1080p but can handle 1080i (for some movies) but 720p is just as good for fast moving action).

  6. If developers were able to skin the horrible, horrible channel guide I currently have to endure with Cablevision, that alone would sell the device for me.

    Dropping 1080p doesn’t make sense to me, though. Even though Apple isn’t a slave to specs, I’ve never known them to backtrack once support for a higher standard is offered. Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t care less: it’s just un-Apple-like.

  7. @ visual asshole and others.

    Apple is getting stupid. They say no to bluray and you whimpy Mac guys suck it up. We pay 2 times what it cost for a PC and get half the specs. It was okay when Apple was the underdog but not it’s just insulting. But of course there is always a lame suck ass like the visual suck ass noted above that will go along with anything Jobs dictates. 720 is moving backwards and you could justify your stupid argument for other Apple numb skulls.

    Google is going to knock Apple back to the stone age if they don’t wake up and give customers what they want instead of what pads their billion dollar bank accounts.

    Imagine a bottom basement i3 for $1299. Hahahaahahahahaahaha – what a joke. You silly little morons. Unless you stop buying this shit, they’ll keep feeding it to you.

  8. @Joe

    It was nice of some of the posters to indulge your first comment by offering you some explanations.

    With your most recent slug of incoherent spew, I can safely speak for everybody: please shut the fsck up and go back under your bridge.

  9. Engadget does it again. A BS and FUD cocktail.

    The ONLY way TV will be taken seriously would be to ADD FULL-HD 1080p output.

    Running iOS would be a next logical step. Being able to run iPad apps on your HDTV would be great, though.

  10. 720P is moving backwards? Okay Joe, tell us what service streams in 1080P. Major networks still broadcast in 720P; not to mention the compression that satellite and cable companies apply to the signal to degrade it even further.

    PC’s with half the specs beating Macs? My daughter’s $900 MacBook smokes my $1,500 piece of shit Lenovo work laptop.

    Sounds like you’re buying into other people’s shit – silly little moron.

  11. Of course, I wouldn’t buy an Apple TV without 1080p, either.

    But I’m not sure I buy the app angle, either… at least not the ability to run iPhone/iPad apps. Most non-game iPhone apps would be useless on a TV. Even using the iPhone or Magic Trackpad doesn’t make total sense. Those are useful options for controlling a pointer, but most apps are made for a true touch interface which requires the ability to touch objects on the screen. Maybe they plan on a wiimote like interface?

  12. Heya

    I think ,hopefully that the ios will be integrated to snow Leapord.

    All mac computers will be able to access Itunes stores.

    With the magic trackpad,it will be easy play numerous games either on your 27/15 inch imac or your HD TV.
    Communication via bluetooth.

    Join wirelessly several ipod touches/ iphones to a central Apple TV hub to play on your HD TV or MAC.

    Fun for the whole family.
