Unlike with our iPhone 3GS units, we get consistent, usable AT&T service with our iPhone 4 units in our cavernous HQ – and we haven’t approved any new AT&T cell towers, either. Papermaster’s departure was probably due to something else entirely.
Madway continues, “Papermaster was not at the press conference on July 16. Mansfield, who will take over for him, now oversees Macintosh hardware engineering. ‘Mr. Mansfield already manages groups that create many of the key technologies for the iPhone and iPod touch, including the A4 chip, Retina display and touch screens,’ Dowling said.”
Madway reports, “Apple hired Papermaster in November of 2008, luring him away from IBM, where he had worked for 25 years. IBM sued Papermaster after his departure, saying he agreed to avoid working for any competitor for a year. A federal court initially barred Papermaster from working for Apple, but the lawsuit was eventually resolved and he began work for Apple in April of 2009.”

I’ve been trashed on this site for saying that lord Jobs was lying about the iP4 being “the best phone ever”. Maybe now you will show me some respect.
The iP4 is Apple’s biggest disaster in years – maybe in all of Apple history. The defective phone was pushed out to market as a result of Jobs and Jon Ive over ruling their engineers who warned that the antenna placement was not going to work.
Arrogant lord Jobs insisted – probably said something about his beloved ‘users’ following him anywhere – so we have the all time blunder.
After the fiasco went viral through main stream media, David Letterman, Consumer Reports, etc. – PANIC at Cupertino.
Lord jobs held his famous presser, admitted that the phone has problems sending, receiving signals and maintaining phone calls but said you could cover up those embarrassing problems with a free rubber band or some kind of case.
MDN & Jobs lovers here called me names for insisting on a working phone, really fixed, and not accepting one that didn’t work.
The firing of Papermaster is absolute proof of my position. I’m vindicated. The only thing left is to see if I’m right about what happens next.
It’ll be a hardware fix for the iP4 or the iP5 rushed into production with the antenna inside the phone and engineered so it supports phone calls and the rest of what you buy an iPhone to do.
When either of those solutions have been accomplished, I want Apple to exchange the one I bought on opening day for the re-engineered model that does everything lord Jobs promised – holding the damn thing any way he wanted to hold it – when he rolled it out at WWDC.
And, I want MDN to lead the effort to ensure that outcome – a new, really revolutionary, best phone ever – is available for everyone who wants to exchange their lousy first generation iP4.
We were lied to and only a complete moron would just shut up and go away after being treated so badly.
That Mark Hurd fiasco was going on at HP since late June. Maybe Mark Papermaster became interested in being considered for HP CEO, if Hurd was going to resign, and covertly inquired. Steve Jobs heard about it, considered it disloyal, got ticked off, and “asked” Papermaster to leave Apple.
Hey, my speculation is just as valid as the media’s speculating that his departure is due to “antennagate.”

AAPL is still selling like hotcakes. Revenue and Record Profits are Up. Good management is still in place.

Yes, Apple’s has its most successful product launch ever, and its biggest disaster ever, all rolled up into one product. Amazing! In case you didn’t notice, sell-out launches continue worldwide (including Canada and Australia). No one’s complaining about “antennagate” in those new markets, and the media (even in the U.S.) is getting pretty bored with the whole non-story.

Well, the appointment of the “sugar water sales bozo” ranks pretty high on the list of disasters. But it’s true that one of the ironies of the iPhone 4 is that it’s a flawed but very successful product. Come September, I suspect we might see the “flawed” bit fixed.
The antennagate guy is gone from Apple. The antennagate guy should never have worked at Apple.

In Sydney, I cannot for the life of me replicate the same issue on the iPhone 4.
There are people in the Apple Store every day, trying to replicate the issue, and some even ask the staff to replicate it, and they cannot. THeres nothing wrong with the antenna.

The biggest disaster in Apple’s history was the Apple III. And most of the blame for the Apple III disaster goes to Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs is not perfect. His past is full of mistakes. But he learned, and it doesn’t change the fact that he’s a remarkable businessman.
I don’t own an iPhone 4, so I can’t say first hand it’s an issue or a non-issue. All I can say is, I’m very satisfied with every Apple product I’ve own. I have an Apple II that still works, over 30 years later. I have a 512K Mac and a Macintosh Plus, both working. My old iBook works like a charm. And my MacBook Pro works perfect. I have an iPod Classic, a Shuffle, and 2 iPod Touch (1st and 3rd Gen). No complaints at all.
My dad got an HP laptop and it broke 1 month after the 1 year warranty expired. Now he has a Mac and he’s happier than ever.
So, the iPhone 4 might have issues. But the issues with the iPhone 4 do not compare with the disaster the Apple II was.

Tests have proven the iPhone 4 has better antennae reception than all the previous iPhone models. But there was an *extremely* small factory run of them that was defective.
Using this botched factory run as a basis, you troll MDN pretending that *all* iPhone 4s have defective antennae. Which they don’t. Hence why you’re full of shit. You’re vindicated in nothing and deserve a level of respect somewhere in the negative digits.

How do you figure that? SJ wasn’t involved in the Apple III project, he was working on the Mac at the time.

Actually, Jobs worked at Apple for the design of the Apple III and for another 5 years after that. He is often said to be to blame for the Apple III’s failings because he insisted on a fanless computer. Most of the computer’s problems were related to ‘chip creep’, the tendency for chips to wiggle out of their sockets when overheated. This was so prevalent that AppleCare actually published a kbase article instructing user’s with defective computers to pick them up a few inches off the desk and drop them to essentially slam the chips back down into the sockets. It worked, but obviously folks weren’t happy about it.
Just spent a week with my bro and his new iPhone 4 in rural Wisconsin. (= BAD AT&T reception). Even in very weak ATT areas, he had no problems with call quality and consistently got same or better reception than my 3GS. The thing is fast as sh*t, video cam is AMAZING, screen is AMAZING. Can’t wait to get mine… Finally talked the wife into swapping our contracts so I can upgrade early on hers.
It really bugs me that some people on this and other websites (try to) claim to personally know exactly how things are going in the upper echelons at Apple. There are a lot of people on the internet that claim to know a lot about Steve Jobs. Then they try to make it seem as though they know anything about what happened in situations like this, when in fact they know a lot less than NOTHING. The guy could have left of his own accord. There could have been management differences between him and the rest of the team. There could have been other conflicts. He could have been fired over iPhone 4. The problem is, NOBODY KNOWS. There are a million other reasons the guy could be leaving.

You have no idea what happened in this situation. You have no facts or proof on which to base any of your clueless statements. You know no more about the executive team at Apple than I do, which is to say, not a hell of a lot more than some other idiot on the internet writes. Right now, Apple is earning more in 10 minutes than you’ll probably make in your whole lifetime. Do you seriously think you know better than Jobs? If you read the NY Times article on this subject, you’ll learn that Papermaster has been strangely out of the picture for many months- long before the antenna issues arose.
I say that it may LOOK like he left because of the antennagate PR debacle, but I suspect that there are other issues…
Sometimes we connect the dots and get the wrong picture.
I think Steve wanted to make an example of Papermaster: you get the boot if you f*ck up in a major way.

Here in Australia – all the new headlines on iPhone 4 launch were saying “reception problems – What reception problems?”. iPhone 4 is better than 3GS ever did here. If that’s a disaster – may Apple have many of them.

Since everyone is simply guessing, here’s my take – sometimes a new job simply does not suit someone, and you don’t know until you actually get your feet wet. Also not everyone working for Jobs royally toils on forever (take Rubenstein for ex.). Papermaster came from being a long time at IBM, a very different work culture. Perhaps he simply cannot keep up, despite his experience and expertise. A contentious hiring always seems to jinx a position.

The iPhone 4 has about a 1.7% return rate(for perspective, the iPhone 3Gs had a *6%* return rate). Only 0.55% calls to AppleCare about it had anything to do with antenna reception. It seems most people with an iPhone 4 can’t reproduce the deathgrip no matter how hard they try. Complaints are in the small minority, and that even *includes* astroturfers like Vindicated who make up fake stories to artificially inflate the number of complaints. Everybody outside North America is baffled by antennagate(see CC of Oz’s comment).
So, yeah. Everything and the kitchen sink points to the defective iPhone 4’s being the products of a bad(and small) factory run. Which souldn’t be too surprising considering Apple was rushing iPhone 4s out of the factories so fast the screen glue hadn’t even dried on some of them. You can’t rush manufacturing that fast *without* producing some defective units, damnit. Apple’s guilty of stupidly not pushing back the release date so they’d have enough iPhone 4s ready thus not have to rush production like mad. What they aren’t guilty of is designing a bad antenna.

This to all of you posters, good or bad experience w/ ur iPhone 4. Are any of you technologically advanced enough to understand signal strength ? Let me start off by saying I bought 2 i4’s. Both had multiple antenna issues verified by one company & one company alone – Apple Care. They sent me 2 replacement phones fedex. Now I still have some connectivity issues with Bluetooth and yes I have issues with dropping or receiving calls on BOTH i4’s. I personally have tested 10 different Bluetooth devices all made & current firmware of no more then 14 months old. The Bluetooth issue IS STILL there. As to dropping calls or signal strength issues, that can be blamed on both Apple & ATT. Face it ATT does not have the systems these other countries do much less the amount of phones overall on the system. Let me give you an example, I just did a tour w/ Sarah Mclachland & we did several shows in 3 of the Canadian Providences. I had a rock solid 5 bars the entire trip! The Internet on the coach NEVER failed or slowed the entire time we were in ANOTHER country !!!!!!!! Now granted I still had my Bluetooth issues & connectivity issues but never service issues. Nor did any other of the coach drivers along with a crew of over 250 folks. Now the crew being nearly all western Canadian, they had massive problems in the US on ATT ONLY. So when I read all these post of all these other countries not having issues can it possibly be that they might just have a better built system then us poor basturd followers in the US. We demand exceptionally superb products from Apple yet we jump onboard with a shitty carrier only to do all our bitchin’ on a BLOG. Gimme a break.
So now I am in a delimma. I got 2 new i4’s from Apple themselves and still have most of the same issues. Clearly putting me outside my “ever so gracious – my azz” 30 day refund period. So now what, do I join the bitch group here ? NOT on your life. Do I suck it up as a financial loss ? Again, NOT a chance. I just continue to stay in touch with Apple Care, cuz Steve says he cares about each & everyone of us being happy, and see what happens.
I deal in facts, where most of you here want to believe rumor control. If you have an issue with a product why would even THOUGTH PROCESS voicing your concerns in places like this. I happen to feel MDN is a great place for information, but I am not going to accept it as the end all be all by no means. Get grip on life folks, look at the facts, your problem is with one of of 2 companies. Figure out which one and start spending some your your lame azz time on the phone with them registering your complaint, following thru with it and looking for a resolution – just as I am right this very day.
And no I don’t work for any technology company, I drive your favorite musician all over hells half acre while they sing for you in your city. I have more miles on my phone then minutes. Currently over 3 million miles of safe driving in over 20 years. So don’t cry to me about your hometowns spotty service !! I personally experience it everyday !
