Daily Telegraph reviews iPhone 4: Not just a slight improvement over iPhone 3GS, a massive jump

On the occasion on the iPhone 4 launch in Australia, Stephen Fenech reports for The Daily Telegraph, “I knew it would be impossible to review Apple’s new iPhone 4 without first discussing the antenna ‘issue.’ I’ve been using the iPhone 4 for nearly a week to make calls, send and receive emails and surf the web from various places around the city and suburbs.”

“Is the antenna an issue? No it’s not,” Fenech reports. “Have I dropped calls? No, I have not. Have I noticed an impact on the device’s performance? No.”

“Now it would be impossible for me to test every single mobile reception area in Australia just as it would be unlikely any iPhone 4 user will use the device in every mobile reception area in Australia,” Fenech reports. “If reception is an issue where you live you will probably experience difficulties no matter what smartphone you use.”

“Is the iPhone 4 an improvement over the iPhone 3GS? Absolutely,” Fenech reports. “The iPhone 4 is the best smartphone Apple has ever made… You can only appreciate how thin the device is when you hold it on your hand. The iPhone 3GS next to the iPhone 4 is like a before and after photo of a Biggest Loser contestant.”

“The iPhone 4 is not just a slight improvement over the iPhone 3GS, it is a massive jump,” Fenech reports. “There are so many enhancements across the board it will be hard for existing iPhone owners to resist and a great place to start for users who are new to the smartphone market.”

  1. @ janekg, it’s the duty of American journalists to give equal weight to exactly two sides of every issue regardless of merit — and regardless of whether there are more than two sides. I guess these foreign journalists just don’t have the same standards : )

  2. Down-under article gets the low down goodies on the new iPhone 4!!!

    Anyway, before this year ends AAPL will climb pass $301 dollares ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
In 2011, AAPL goes to $401 and will have passed by Exxon!

Can’t wait to see the new Apple product coming out before Christmas!

” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> Momentum is with Apple like for ten years already! Aye.

  3. When I first got my iPhone 4 it did not feel like a massive jump. Sure, it looks good, feels solid, and is fast, but it didn’t really seem like a big deal.

That all changed when i had to pull a setting off my old 3G. After using the iPhone 4 for a few hours the 3G felt big and bulky, the screen looked fuzzy and blurry, and the processor felt like it was from the 90’s (slower than a dinosaur).

If you try and use the old iPhones after experiency the iP4, yes, it does feel like a massive jump.

  4. Bastard. Has a iPhone 4 and I don’t.

Easily the fastest sold out too. Went on sale online at 12am July 29. Optus website imploded under the load at 12:01am. I wanted the 32gb black one Tried to call in on the sales line at 1am after I gave up on the website. On hold for 50 mins, gave the website a try again at 1:30am. Slowly came up with a notice that’s it back-ordered. Finally ordered mine at 1:50am. Up to 4 week wait for new batch. Aaaaarrrgh!

All stores sold out just after opening.

Supposedly there were 16gb ones still available at 4am.

Optus site was still slow this afternoon. Other carriers were the same story.

Fricken amazing. An entire countries’ supply of iPhones sold in less than 8 hours.

  5. @ disposableidentity

That’s funny I thought it was an Australian ‘journalist’ who owns a fair lump of the American news market. Haven’t noticed that his standards have gone up since that move, indeed they seem to have reached rock bottom. So probably best to keep away from that rather bigoted argument when talking about reporting standards.

  6. G’day Sparky,
As long as you do it quietly, mate. Please, please (!), no more Americans attempting Aussie accents. Twenty years later, Streep’s diabolical “the dingo took my baby” still screeches like fingernails down a blackboard.

    Enz

  7. ‘disposableidentity’, please note that ‘unbiased’ does not mean ‘bigoted’ not even in Australia. Further, the ex Aussie journalist is now a full fledged US citizen. As a matter of conjecture you consider the distinct possibility that just ‘maybe’ his journalistic standards have markedly deteriorated as a direct result of the environment in which he works?
