Sprint’s ‘Peel’ jacket could provide 3G wireless access to Apple iPod touch

Apple Online Store“US wireless carrier Sprint is slated to offer a kind of handset sleeve that could provide 3G wireless access to an iPod touch, the Apple iPhone that’s not a phone,” Cade Metz reports for The Register.

MacDailyNews Take: People who think iPod touch is an iPhone without the phone need to look at the specs lists for both devices.

Metz continues, “Chinese manufacturer ZTE has submitted a Sprint-branded device to the Federal Communications Commission that can house a mini-tablet like the iPod touch and supply EVDO 3G service via WiFi. In essence, it’s a WiFi hotspot that wraps around a WiFi-only handheld… This contraption is dubbed the ‘Peel,’ an apparent play off the Apple name.”

Metz reports, “At this point, it has only been approved for Sprint’s slower EVDO service, Rev. 0. It has its own battery, and the battery recharges via microUSB port.”

  1. So I have an iPod Touch, a mobile phone, a normal phone, IP provider all of whom charge me for this services iPod Touch withstanding, and then I want a peel that will cost me another 3G charge, plus continual battery charging. Why do I need this????

  2. “, … the user manual suggests that the Peel would serve much like a traditional 3G mobile hotspot, allowing up to five devices to connect to it to share the Internet connection.”

Apple needs to make an AirPort 3G/4G Mobile Wi-Fi Bridge or they will loose the foot hold. It is time to make one that is independent of a carrier and get past this tethering PR issue.

  3.

Okay, fine. An iPod touch is an iPhone without the phone, GPS, camera, and gyroscope, and a more memory. Is that good enough, your anal-retentiveness?

“iPhone without the phone” is close enough, and you all know it.

or they will loose the foot hold……..

NO – they will LOSE, LOSE, LOSE the foot hold. If it were loose, then they’d drop it and LOSE it. Come on, you’ve been at this for a long time, how about spell and grammar checking what you send. It makes you look like a Jr. High student on your Mom’s computer the way you do it now!
