South Korea upset over iPhone 4 delay

“The decision to drop South Korea from this week’s list of iPhone 4 launches has generated some controversy in the country, says the Wall Street Journal. Apple CEO Steve Jobs actually announced the move on July 16th, saying that it would ‘take us a little longer to get government approval there,'” Electronista reports. “The current Korean iPhone carrier, KT, initially insisted that a July 30th launch was still on track; the company was later forced to admit that the phone would arrive ‘in the coming months.'”

“Local media has reportedly been in an uproar, accusing Jobs of putting South Korea behind other countries, or outright lying about the delay’s causes. Officials in the South Korean government are said to be unhappy, since they have spent the last year removing trade barriers to make it easier to sell foreign phones,” Electronista reports. “Communications regulators, in fact, say that neither Apple nor KT have even submitted the iPhone 4 for approval.”

“The firestorm is said to be related to South Korea’s perception of itself as a leader in high technology,” Electronista reports. The country has some of the fastest cellular and Internet networks in the world, and is home to Samsung and LG, two of the world’s biggest electronics companies. Since the iPhone 3GS arrived nine months ago however local media had described a phenomenon known as ‘iPhone shock’ — a realization that Korean companies and the public are lagging behind in smartphone technology.”

  1. “The firestorm is said to be related to South Korea’s perception of itself as a leader in high technology” – some leader. They believe samsung and LG are leaders in technology, just like Nokia believe itself is a leader.

  2. Makes no sense for KT not to submit papers for approval if they thought iPhone would rake it in. Does Apple has that much pull on a foreign carrier?

Anyway like I kept saying – wait for the white model. They’ll fix everything.

  3. Whatever. Apple is sucks. I don’t fully understand even why white one has to be delay until next year. Coating problem? Apple makes very good quality phone, then can’t solve that damn problem? Apple will be going down. Now they enjoy big revenue which only happened three months to exceed over MS. For long term, Apple can’t compete with MS. You have no idea how much monsterous money MS has. Apple shows up but that’s funny.

  4. And this is important because why? I never cease to be amazed at how wigged out the technorati get over trivial issues, especially when it comes to Apple.

I understand that the always-unmellow people of the good country of South Korea get their collective boxer briefs in a knot. I get that already. But, people, get a life! Go outside! Enjoy your families and the summer! Worry instead about your friendly neighbors to the north, and pray that in a fit of irrational behavior that they don’t open up with their 70,000 artillery launchers pointed at Seoul. That would make this story even more trivial than it is.

    Have a nice day.

  5. KT & Apple have submitted to the S. Korean Communications Commission. Anyone who thinks they have not is an idiot. It is taking longer to get the required approvals than anyone expected (except maybe Samsung & LG). Since the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, “trade barriers” have been hardly an issue. Bringing that up is a smoke screen or a pure, unimformed guess by someone not willing to do any research into the issue. It won’t be “months” before it goes on sale in S. Korea. It just won’t be this Friday.

  6. Two whites do not make a wong as two wongs do not a white.

A white iPhone will not solve supply issues just as a black iPhone will not either.

However, a wong combined with a white will solve supply issues!

North Korea isn’t going to do crap. It is not as big of a deal as the US media makes it out to be. South Koreans are genuinely not concerned about North Korea. If something were to happen there is no point in worrying about because its going to happen regardless.
