Severely constrained inventory signals new iMacs coming soon

Apple Store“An AppleInsider reader sent word Sunday that the 21.5-inch iMac, and quad-core 27-inch model are both unavailable for the Reserve and Pick Up option at the company’s retail store in Buffalo, N.Y.,” AppleInsider reports. “In addition, some desktops are unavailable in other locations, including Apple’s Fifth Avenue store in New York City, where the quad-core 27-inch is not available for pick-up.”

“The changes to the company’s Reserve and Pick Up option come soon after Apple warned its direct and indirect sales channels of near-term shortages of the iMac,” AppleInsider reports. “The company is drawing down its inventory ahead of the launch of new models, expected to arrive in the coming weeks.”

AppleInsider, “Potential configurations of the new hardware include a dual-core Core i5 model and quad-core Core i5 and Core i7 configurations. People familiar with the plan previously indicated to AppleInsider that Intel’s low-end Core i3 processor would also find its way into the iMac line.”

  1. Quiet processor update tomorrow methinks . . . . otherwise there would have been a media invite by now.

    Makes me wonder if the rumored touch pad for desktops will get its own press conference or just be quietly released, too.

  2. Yawn, call me when there’s a touch screen or pad and hitting dashboard brings up an ios app springboard.

    Because you know imacs configured like that have to have been bouncing around apple’s labs for a year or more….

  3. I’m sooo glad we ordered a 27″ iMac that I cant return now.. that should be coming this week 🙁

    @WindozeBloze

    Good luck on that. I guess its nice though that my mac pro will keep its value a little bit longer since there is no refresh since forever

  4. If my experience is any indication, some iMacs have not been available from the Apple Education store for weeks. While even today their web site says ships within 24 hr, I ordered a 21.5″ iMac on July 1 and still haven’t gotten it. Every few days they put the ship date back by 3-5 days. They have told me on more than one occasion that they can’t check to find out what’s holding the order up (as if I believe that). If you look at MacMall or Smalldog, at least they have the decency to show that most iMacs are not shipping for immediate delivery (“Call Us” per MacMall, or “Backordered” per Smalldog).

  5. @jtc – Actually, you can return it within 14 days, for a small restocking fee. A year ago, I had just ordered a last gen MacBook when the 13″ unibody MBP with FireWire was announced. I didn’t even open the MB when it arrived, just sent it back and put in my order for the MBP. It cost me a few extra dollars, but I am so happy with this computer. It was a lesson to never order anything right before the Mac Developers Conference. You never know what goodies might appear.
