Rik Myslewski reports for The Register, “Amid all the ballyhoo and whoop-de-doo about Apple’s resurgence being a result of the consecutive successes of the iPod and iPhone — and the promise of the iPad — one Cupertinian money-maker has been flying under the radar: Mac sales have more than tripled in the past five years.”
“During the company’s recently completed $15.7bn third fiscal quarter, Apple sold 1 million desktops (iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro and Xserve), accounting for revenues of $1.3bn, and 2.47 million notebooks (MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro), bringing in $3.1bn,” Myslewski reports. “Compare that with, say, the third quarter of 2005, when Macs pulled in under $1.6bn.”
MacDailyNews Note: In Q305, Apple sold 1.182 million Mac units. In Q310, Apple sold 3.472 million Macs.
Myslewski reports, “And so the trusty ol’ Mac goes its merry way, quietly capturing scads of cash for Cupertino while letting the flashier gadgets grab the headlines.”

BUT THE MAC IS DEEEEEEEAAAD!!!!!!
The I.T. horse’s asses at my plant have been trying to kill off company Macs for years—give it up, fools
Definition of Apple product: an object that you can not pry out of my wife’s hands

Does that make me a necrophiliac? Cause I love my Mac.
We are one with the Mac!
It’s amazing how many people ignore mac sales since all of the focus is on ipod, iphone, and ipad sales.
BTW, it might be easier to write 3Q05 and 3Q10 instead of Q305 and Q310.
@ praus
You and me both.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
I’ve been using a macbook pro at work for 2 years now. My wife finally agreed to switch to a mac at home. We bought our first mac this month. (Refurbished iMac i5 27″) The screen is incredible and the machine is FAST!
My wife is loving Aperture. She kept bugging me to get her photoshop on Windows, but Aperture now does all her photo editing needs. (MUCH cheaper) The one thing she misses is her touchpad from her dell laptop. I can’t see how she liked that touchpad, since it was HORRIBLE compared to a mac touchpad. If Apple ever sells their new trackpad, we’ll be buying one.
Oh, and as soon as Apple comes out with a new AppleTV we’ll be buying one of those too. The Xbox isn’t the best at streaming mp4’s to the TV. I expect that AppleTV will take off like the iPhone/iPad once Apple opens the OS to 3rd party apps. Imagine an AppleTV with thousands of 3rd party apps!

Not a chance. The Register is the original link bait hit whore, posting the most egregious anti-Apple nonsense for years. I stopped reading them years ago.
Our Macs in small advertising agency in South Africa Johannesburg have been our bread and butter for the last 20 years. We have been in hard times but Macs have been our asset we prized the most. Expensive and no support in the early days we felt that we needed to maintain a Mac shop. Today Mac has become a rich mans toy, but we understood the value. Our Pc techs are on daily call outs for our ACcount Executive’s who only want PC’s, while our designers in the Engine Room just continue to perform miracles on Mac minis that are 4 years old without problems. I think this is true in most cases around the world.
@Vatdoro
Apple is coming out with their desktop trackpad:

Agreed that TV is better than XBox for viewing personal content from local network, but Netflix instant viewing on XBox is nice to have.
furthermore, in the earnings call yesterday Tim Cook mentioned that Mac sales have outgrown the rest of the PC market for 17 straight quarters. Plus, about half of the Macs sold were to new Mac users.
Apple still see a huge opportunity for Mac growth.
@C1
You were right the first time. MAC has been dead for years, the cultists just don’t know it yet.
I’m getting my new employer-issued Windows laptop this week! I am so excited! Awesome Dell hardware running the venerable Windows XP will be pure bliss. All my favorites will be there: Outlook, Office and when I want to let my hair down, Paint! Windows rulez, MAC drools.
Your potential. Our passion.™
Ahh, necrophilia, sex without the bitching.
And… another week goes by with no refresh to the Mac Pro line! Where is that 12 core Mac Pro that should have been released a while ago?
@ ZT
Don’t forget Power Point, where the *real* excitement begins.
And my Mac purchases have tripled over the same period.
My in-laws, cousins, and neighbors were formerly pc people by default. They now all own Macs instead.
Why have we stopped hearing about what the Freshman are bringing to college? I asked a Freshman last year and was told that it was 75% or more using MacBooks!!!
You know they get jobs and are the next generation running your IT department, labs, research and development, sales, … You think Steve Ballmer knows about this?
Even Steve Ballmer called the iPad a computer. They will not count it. BUT, the crappy netbooks are being cannibalized by the iPad and the PC box makers will no longer be able to pad their numbers using those low entry almost a PC boxes this and even more so next quarter! What will Apple’s market share look like then? What if all Apple’s iOS devices (computers) were counted?
Apple is indeed selling Macs well. However, this level of reporting is shameful. Come on, MDN, stop cherry-picking your data!!! Show the real sales trends instead of acting like Faux News, harping on incomplete/misleading data to sell your message.
Just comparing 3rd quarter 2005 with first quarter 2010 (a record-setting quarter) makes it appear that Mac sales increased 30% per year. They didn’t.
http://switchtoamac.com/site/mac-growth-slowdown-2-consecutive-quarters-of-growth-deceleration.html
Nobody, myself included, ever said the Mac was dead because sales were collapsing. The Mac is dead because Steve wants it to be. He sees the Mac like he sees Flash. The future is iOS and he devotes most of Apple’s already strained resources to iOS, draining the Mac development pool. He’s killing it slowly.
Those who refuse to believe eat up Steve’s excuse for the lack of Mac attention this year (“we’re concentrating on iOS to maintain momentum”). Okay, so why would it be any different in 2011 when their most important product will be iPad II? Are you expecting a certain burst of Mac activity? Lol.
iOS will still be the top priority. And the year after that. And the year after that. And the year after that.
@R2
Idiot.
Can we at last drop all talk of Apple abandoning the Mac? It’s the fourth leg of the stool – the others being iPod, iPhone and iTunes. It’s growing, making good money, and provides justification for all that investment in OS X.
BTW, I note mention of the Xserve. I’d love to know how many they’re selling, and if they’re going into the new server farm. (I got my old federal office to procure an Xserve/Xraid combo, and it served us well.)
What is remarkable is that Apple set the Mac sales record during the calendar quarter when Mac sales are usually not the highest AND it was also the quarter that iPad sales began. Over 3 million iPads were sold, yet Apple sold more Macs than ever before. Where’s the “cannibalization”?
While it is possible Mac sales would have been a bit higher still if iPad was not around, this is what I think really happened…
Early in the quarter, Apple released iPad to the world. There may be a higher percentage of Mac users in the group of very early adopters, but as time goes on the majority of iPad customers will be Windows users, just because there are many more Windows users out there compared to Mac users.
Most Windows users still have a PC running Windows XP. And if it’s running Windows XP, it is likely to be an aging PC. After using his iPad for a few weeks, he thinks, “I really like my iPad. I still need a regular computer and mine is getting old. I’m going to check out one of those Macs I saw when I bought my iPad.”
So he goes to the Apple Store, enjoys seeing how Mac OS X works, and finds out he can keep running his Windows XP installation “on the side.” The Apple Store is crowded and everyone seems to be buying Apple gear. Fortunately for Apple, during the same quarter, they have updated the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, which are the most likely Mac models a newbie Mac user would choose. Once “getting a Mac” is seriously considered, buying a Mac is a no-brainer decision for many. It was stated that more than half of Mac customers during the quarter are first time Mac users. So Apple is replacing more Windows PC than old Macs.
So did iPad “cannibalize” some MacBook sales? Probably. But it more than made up for it by making a large number of Windows users “consider” getting a Mac (for probably the first time) when they replace their regular computers. And more “consideration” is all Apple needs to get that second 10% in market share for Mac. There are still plenty of Windows users out…
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Which sets the stage for one of my all time favorite idiot PC commentator quotes, from WIndows Shill Paul Thurrott,
“Why is this so hard for Mac advocates to understand? The Mac market is ending. “
Almost Enderle-like in its level of cluelessness.
Why can’t we all just get along and then, all get a Mac!
