Analysts: Apple’s Q310 numbers are spectacular, impressive

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Apple Inc. reported a sharp jump in earnings for its third fiscal quarter on Tuesday — blowing past Wall Street’s estimates — thanks in large part to booming demand for the company’s iPhone and iPad devices,’ Dan Gallagher reports for MarketWatch. “Shares of Apple rose nearly 2% in after-hours trading, after jumping nearly 2.6% to close at $251.89 late in the regular session.”

“‘The numbers are spectacular,’ said Shaw Wu of Kaufman Bros. in an e-mail. ‘They were able to post very strong results despite an inventory drawdown on the iPhone 4 — looks like they managed the iPhone 3GS to 4 transition smoother than expected,'” Gallagher reports. “For the quarter ended June 27, the company reported earnings of $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per share, compared with earnings of $1.83 billion, or $2.01 per share, for the same period the previous year. Revenue jumped 61% to $15.7 billion.”

“Analysts were expecting earnings of $3.11 per share on revenue of $14.75 billion, according to consensus forecasts from Thomson Reuters,” Gallagher reports. “Apple sold 3.27 million iPads for the period — roughly in line with the units predicted by analysts. Mac sales totaled 3.47 million units compared with expectations for 3.2 million units. ‘The Mac number is the most impressive,’ said Colin Gillis of BGC Partners. ‘One of the points we’ve been trying to make is that there is a virtuous circle going on with Apple, as customers who are exposed to the iPhone and iPad also want a Mac.'”

Gallagher reports, “For the fourth fiscal quarter, Apple said it expects revenue of $18 billion with earnings of $3.44 per share. Analysts had been expecting revenue of $3.82 per share on revenue of $17.03 billion. Wu of Kaufman Bros. called the revenue forecast ‘surprisingly upbeat’ for the company, but said the earnings guidance was ‘typically conservative.'”

I think that antenna bs did stick. With about a hundred thousand geeks who were going to buy Droids anyhow. It hasn’t dimmed sales much according to Apple. But it has been a great subject for the media who were tiring of repeating over and over the BP stuff. Wonder if we will ever hear anything from them re Motorola’s screen problems. On second thought, nah.

  2. > Apple sold 3.27 million iPads for the period — roughly in line with the units predicted by analysts.

OMG, that’s such a huge laugh. Analysts made their “predictions” after Apple announced 3 million iPads in 80 days (which was about 84 days into the quarter). Not too hard to predict 3.x million in the quarter, when Apple tells you how many were sold with about a week left in the quarter… At the start of the quarter, most of the analyst predictions for ALL OF 2010 where lower than what Apple sold in the first quarter of iPad availability.

  3. No grief for Motorola. You don’t pick on the little kids on the block.

Let’s hit the Cocaine Cartels next. They have to be bigger and badder than Apple. It’s their turn in the barrel.

  4. @ HughB

You can’t sell more iPhones than you can produce. So Apple would not have sold any more or fewer iPhones. By the time Apple catches up with demand (probably some time in 2011 after the Holidays), no one will remember “antennagate.”

  5. Al, “Let’s hit the Cocaine Cartels next. They have to be bigger and badder than Apple. It’s their turn in the barrel.”

No. I believe we should turn our attention to this yahoo in the White-House. You don’t need an analyst to see that he’s screwing with the USA – big time. The rest of the world is cutting fat and he’s spending us into oblivion. Roll-on November and 2012. Apple is paying taxes on all this profit, and the dums are spending it.

  6. @ acid

New iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook Air. Obviously, a new lineup of iPods. Maybe that “magic trackpad.” And just maybe, a new Apple TV along with the iPods.

Since one of the Apple execs said (off-hand) that the new NC data center will start to be used before the end of the calendar year, I think iTunes 10 will also be released to take advantage of it (along with Apple TV).

  7. Before anyone goes ands says FOR A FACT that the whole antenna thing didn’t affect their earnings, remember, OBJECTIVELY (hint to MDN) that the fiscal quarter ended 2 DAYS after the iPhone 4 was released…so…
And yes, I do think “Antennagate” was blown out of proportion and improperly reported upon in many areas, and no, I am not a troll bashing Apple (I’ve been a customer for 22 years…can you say that?)… I am just trying to consider ALL OF THE FACTS. Period.

  8. So my spending on AAPL hardware and software over the years has made the company rich and helps blow away the ‘Crud’ that others have to offer. Well done ‘Apple Inc.’ & kudos to Steve Jobs and the rest of the crew.

    > emember, OBJECTIVELY (hint to MDN) that the fiscal quarter ended 2 DAYS after the iPhone 4 was released.

It doesn’t matter even for this current quarter. Apple is selling every iPhone 4 it makes as fast as they can make them. You can’t sell iPhones faster than you can produce them. Apple is not going to catch up to demand this quarter, because there is still a three-week wait to get one (despite any negative impact of “antennagate”) and Apple has to set aside inventory for the continuing world-wide rollout. Then, the Holiday quarter will come along to further increase demand. By the time Apple does manage to catch up with demand, no one will remember “antennagate”; it will become the non-issue it always was in the real world.

The only actual impact from “antennagate” is the cost of those cases Apple is gifting to iPhone 4 owners. I think they said approx. $175 million. In relative terms, that cost is almost trivial.

  10. @ken1w:

I completely agree, and you make some excellent observations.

I think my message is only that we are (rightly) being critical of the bashers and the haters and the trolls for fudging facts and using emotional guerilla warfare to promote that bashing and hating and trolling, and then some of “us” will turn around and bend the evidence to support “our” stance”.

It’s a little hypocritical and I don’t want to play a part in it. I want facts. They are clean, logical, beautiful, and no one should ever feel the need to be afraid of them or subvert them.

Maybe I just need to chill though. Who knows. Either that, or just stay off the damn message boards for a while.

I appreciate your level headed insight though.

  11. Hopefully, at least for now, this will put an end to the speculation by many people in the past after the announcement of the iPhone 4 that Apple was “neglecting” the Mac product line. If people just let Apple do its job by making incredible products in each product line, then they would be happier people, rather than speculating that one line is being too-focussed on at the expense of other lines. Relax.

  12. I will be shocked if they do a new mac pro.. its been WAY overdue for a new one now.I have mine I got from november 2008…. I unfortunately missed out on the nehalem processors.. but it was free from my busted G5 😀

As much as I love a ton of power.. I keep lookin at that 27″ iMac and how nice the 24″ LED would look right next to it on my desk… But drive space is an issue for me oh well… I’m awaiting my stock to jump through the roof as usual 😀

oh wait.. it already has 😀

  13. Look CAREFULLY at what this guy says in this newspiece:

Colin Gillis of BGC Partners. “One of the points we’ve been trying to make is that there is a virtuous circle going on with Apple, as customers who are exposed to the iPhone and iPad also want a Mac.’

I started my computer career with the IBM-PC in 1981, and from 1982 to 1991 I made my living out of that “standard”. I hated Apple! After being a BlackBerry user I saw the light (was born again!) 10 months ago with the purchase of an iPhone 3GS 32GB. Then I got my 4th daughter into one. My sister, my father, my cousins, my best friends all followed. Then I got an iPad 64GB WiFi the day it came out. Sold it the day the iPad 64GB 3G came out and got myself the new model. 2 of my daughters bought Apple laptops. Then I ordered the iPhone 4 on June 15h. Got it the 24th.

Yesterday I went to the Apple Store to reserve THREE iPhone 4s for my other 3 daughters. While waiting for my turn at the store, I discovered the iMacs. WOW WOW WOW! Now I’m set to buy the 27 inch top of the line before the month is over!

Talk about a “virtuous circle”! This guy Gillis knows what he’s talking about! It seems I’m not alone!!!

    APPLE ROCKS!!!

  14. Ok, everyone with a phone other than an iPhone please look at your bars. Now move your meat hooks around the sides. See your bars go down? This has been normal since cell phones stop putting antennas on the top.

ENOUGH said – If you don’t like your iPhone you don’t deserve it.
