Schwarz: Steve Jobs did a great job of putting ‘antennagate’ into proper perspective

“Steve Jobs did a great job of putting ‘antennagate’ into proper perspective,” Jason Schwarz writes for Seeking Alpha.

As we officially put this in the rear view mirror I have three parting shots:

1. Traditional media outlets got duped. The wild west of the blogosphere had a few isolated reports of iPhone 4 antenna issues and then Consumer Reports released a suspect report that was contrary to majority experience and big media everywhere jumped on board. False perception overtook reality. Kudos to Steve Jobs for putting the small minority in its place.

2. The iPhone 4 might sell 20 million units in a single quarter. “Antennagate” will not hinder sales at all.

3. The free bumper promotion will be inconsequential to Apple’s bottom line.

Schwarz writes, “The bottom line is that sentiment is important for investors to gauge in the short run but in the long run it all comes back to fundamentals.”

  1. Judging by some of the responses posted to MDN articles about the Apple presentation today, it’s quite clear some people (and some bloggers and media) aren’t going to let this go.

I hope I’m wrong, but I predict this isn’t over yet.

Some people are just too irrational.

  2. So, in the end (if this is the end) the phone’s principal, outstanding, and most compelling design feature is now to be concealed behind a rubber band or some case that hides it even more.

And we thought we had something that redefined ‘cool’ only to be let down by the reality that sometimes you can’t have ‘cool’ if you want performance.

  3. Unless you can’t afford to buy one share, a split is irrelevant. Splits don’t cause a stock’s price to increase. It may appear that way, since a rising stock will probably continue to rise post split, but there is no evidence that the split itself is a factor.

  4. Steve very politely pointed out the overall stupidity of the media, which unfortunately most journalist will fail to grasp. Apple just notified me that the status of my iP4 has gone from Not yet shipped to Prepared for shipping and hopefully is currently being load on a FEDEX plane in China.

  5. @Our misfortune

You either did not watch the presentation or your comprehension skills are meager. The point is that NO you don’t have to use a case, there is NO real difference in the way the iPhone behaves than does a Blackberry or Android, etc. Most iPhone owners do not have any problems with real world reception or call making.

A case WILL decrease the attenuation, but the type of attenuation in the iPhone is the same as attenuation in all smartphones, and is a non-factor form 99% iPhone users.

  6. @Our misfortune

…or “in the end,” like 95%+ of iPhone 4 customers to date, you might find that even if you grew a pair and ventured out without an ugly condom on your phone… and dared, for an hour or two, to take your mind off of touching your phone in that special spot over and over… then you would experience no practical issue with your reception. Because for the vast majority of real users, the “attenuation” issue is a non-issue. Either they can’t replicate it even if they try, or the attenuation might cause the bars to move a bit, but not enough to drop a call. If it ain’t broke… you don’t need to fix it, and you can quit whining about it!

If you are one of the unlucky few and it is broke, and you don’t like the bumper, try some clear tape… or return it… either way just STFU and get a life, please.

  7. more people get to buy the stock after it splits, the stock appears to be “more accessible” to people that wouldn’t buy it otherwise. people that get to decide whether to split their stock or not know this too. ibm back in the day and berkshire hathaway don’t split because they are/were snobs and don’t/didn’t want commoners owning their stock. the increased potential marketplace does then have a buoyant effect on a split stock. it isn’t just mathematics, it is, more importantly, perception.

  8. I agree with all three points, but if it’s 3 million in three weeks, including the initial demand (and the iPhone 4s stockpiled before launch), Apple may have a tough time producing 20 million iPhones 4’s by the end of the quarter; if Apple can make them, they will have no problem selling them. If you include the $99 iPhone 3GS, perhaps the number would reach 20 million.

  9. 2 me the only real thing the bumper is good 4 is to keep this slippery beast from sliding off the couch when I set it down. Antenna issues be damned! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  10. Well said fredo!

I can cup BOTH hands on every metal part of my iPhone 4 with zero problems during a call. I shut up an android fanboy, 15 minutes holding both hands on the phone without dropping the call ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  11. I am sitting next to a person using some android phone. He has 0 signal, I have 3 bars.
He has to go outside to make a call, surf web, etc. while I sit here in the a/c enjoying my iPhone 4. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  12. I agree that SJ did a wonderful job at putting it all into perspective. Notice that at the end he didn’t offer any “apologies”, but rather honored the Apple faithful? Very classy and well done without slobbering out an apology, which of course SJ must follow the “Gibbs NCIS rule #6” “Never say you’re sorry. It’s a sign of weakness”

  13. @nekogami13

How true. In my neighborhood (Grosse Pointe Park
and east part of Detroit), my iPhone4 and iPad3Gs
usually gets 5bars and a few times 4 and NEVER
any less. That’s inside the drinking holes I visit.
When someone comes back inside after going out
to make a call, I ask if he/she is using a sprint
phone and the answer is yes nearly all the time.

  14. Steve did a great job I thought. Especially the video that showed how other phones are doing the same thing! Apple should edit the portion of the video and play it as a tv commercial on tv just to proof it to the public.

Bashing CR is no use. Apple becoming popular and mainstream pissed off lots of non apple believers, windows users, and the competitors!

Whoever don’t like iPhone 4, just return it! Go back to Rim or nokia or Samsung.

  15. stocks always go to the number they are when they split
same goes for the opposite of a split

the original number becomes fixated in peoples minds
a barrier to any other number being correct
the stock will return to the original price of 250ish
within 12 months of a split:)

support and resistance are mental barriers
