HTC takes wait-and-see approach on iPad knockoffs

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“HTC PR and online community manager Eric Lin continued providing color for the company’s strategy with remarks that the company has no near-term plans to create a tablet,” Electronista reports.

“He acknowledged that the company is ‘always looking at it’ but is taking a cautious stance, as it wants to see a key reason or app to get involved,'” Electronista reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Yes, HTC’s “strategy” is to “wait and see” Apple hit 10+ million iPad units in its first 8 months on the market before they decide to attempt to poorly copy it.

HTC. Here To Copy.™

That, or they’re going to “wait and see” just how much damage Apple’s patent infringement actions do to their derivative little outfit and wannabe products.

  1. “Wait and see” equals ” We WAITed until Apple finally started selling the iPad in April. Now that we have bought several units to dissect, examine, and play around with, we will SEE if we can imitate it. We are already building secret knockoff prototypes in our basements. Once we have models just good enough, we will flood the market just like we are doing with our iPhone knockoffs. Ours will have kickstands!”

  2. Actually, this may be a sign of sanity at HTC. What we mostly hear from other mfrs is “we’ll make our own tablet and it will compete with the iPad.” That, of course, is pure cluelessness, as a tablet without something like the iTunes/App Store/iOS ecosystem is doomed to failure, and nobody else has the resources and ability to produce such an ecosystem. Perhaps HTC is waiting to see how the other mfrs’ tablets do before pouring their own money down the drain.

  3. Translation – There is no viable way (at this time) to easily copy what Apple did with iPad. Windows 7 is not nearly efficient enough for a device with limited system resources, like a tablet (one that is not a monstrous “convertible” tablet). Android is a PDA-class OS that needs more work before it is scaled up to device with a tablet-sized screen, and tablet-sized user expectations. So, we’ll “wait and see” until there is a way to do it, without expending too much effort.

HP realized this problem and they ARE apparently willing to put in the time, resources, and effort to upgrade webOS into a suitable OS for their tablet-sized devices. The only tech company these days that has repeatedly proven its willingness to “do the work” needed to get the payoff in hard-earned profits (and customer loyalty) – Apple.

  4. They must wait until they have a clue on the patent infringement case. Otherwise they are open to many more from Apple.

It could or will burn enough of their resources as is. At least HTC is not running out into the approaching light of an Apple branded locomotive.

  5. I don’t know why other companies even bother… Seriously.. its not about the software… its about itunes and the apps and the whole ecosystem… they just dont get it
