Choosing the right Mac for college

Apple Online Store“With the Macbook being the most popular Mac of all time, it’s no wonder that this is the first choice among college students today. For those of you wanting a little bit more computing power, or just a more durable, stylish look, the MacBook Pro is another viable option for college students,” Carter Sprunger reports for Notebooks.com.

“Apple gives students $50 off MacBooks and up to $200 off MacBook Pro models when the educational discount is applied,” Sprunger reports. “The MacBook offers the computing power and features that should suffice for pretty much any college student. However, for $150 more, the MacBook Pro offers an extra 2GB of RAM, a more durable, eye-catching look, a backlit keyboard, an all glass display, an SD card slot, and a FireWire 800 port”

Sprunger reports, “It very well may be worth the extra cash to upgrade to a MacBook Pro especially when you consider the harsh college environment and demands of college life. The MacBook Pro’s Aluminum body can withstand a bit more abuse and the backlit keyboard is perfect for all the late nights writing papers.”

  1. I Just gotta say. I love my MacBook pro. And I lobe the $150 I got from the iPod touch to help offset an iPad. Gotta love having kids in college. You can use some of there discounts too as a parent.

  2. And sometimes there’s no price differential at all. Two weeks back, the local MicroCenter had the base Macbook Pro at $200 off, making it $999 – the same price as the non-Pro! (I don’t know if it’s still in effect.)

  3. f I were a student today I would not buy a laptop at all, but rather an iMac and an iPad. This gives me the advantages of having a superior desktop computer with a 22″ display, as well as a highly efficient, powerful mobile computer that is both lighter and more flexible than a laptop. I can have my textbooks on the iPad, and I can take it to class for notetaking and recording lectures. With its 10+ hour battery life I can use it for a wider variety of situations without even thinking of having to plug it in. It’s a combination that can’t be beat, providing the best of both desktop and mobile computing.

  4. Again,no one is talking abut the Mac Freshman market share. About 2 years ago, it was some where near 27%. Last year, a Freshman I know said it was closer to 75%.

In 3 or 4 years, these students will be at work and they will be using a Mac. Microsoft knows that their hustle is over and the blind can now see!

  5. My wife’s new 15″ MacbookPro arrived yesterday. She got it fully loaded – i7, fast hard drive, etc. Jeebus, that thing is a BEAST! It loads web pages instantly over our wifi. I’ll try dinking around with iMovie over the weekend. I predict it will beat the pants off my i5 27″ iMac in processing video.

  6. backlit keyboard is not that useful – typing in a dark room for hours is not good for your eyes – most students don’t need the additional features that the pro has – save some money and try a MacBook first – seriously, its still plenty durable and zippy for most uses, one of mine is a 2007 MacBook and it is still great and the new ones are even faster with faster memory – just my 2 cents, i think college = MacBook

  7. Actually I really wonder if the metal in actually more durable. The metal is a nicer finish to behold. It seems to me that it would dent rather than crack or chip like plastic. But the plastic on the MacBooks is quite remarkable: try cutting it some time!

  8. I personally like the style of the current white MacBook better than the MacBook Pros. I use an iMac with two screens most of the time for personal use, and I don’t currently see a pressing need for a mobile Mac. But if I did, I think I would get the white MacBook, waiting until a suitable one appeared on Apple’s certified refurb page.

    Or I’d get an iPad… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  9. I’m a grad student and just bought a 13″ MBP last week. The backlit keys are what sold me, since I was going to add the extra 2GB for $90 anyway. The Genius at the Apple store just asked if I write much at night, which I do, and showed me the little video clip of the keys lighting up. Sold!

Free 8GB iPod Touch and free printer (both after rebate) too. Joy!

    And now I can’t… live…. without…. it.

When I think of the years I wasted as a Windows-wrangler. Ugh.

  10. Good article. One of the most difficult decisions for a college student looking to purchase a mac is choosing which mac to get. Between the White Macbook, Macbook Pro, and Macbook Air, there is plenty of functionality, but it can be confusing which one meets the student’s needs and price range. This mac laptops buying guide can help any student looking for a new mac laptop.
