Apple’s MobileMe could prove to be invaluable to iPad users

MobileMe“Perhaps the biggest improvement Apple can make to MobileMe will have nothing to do with the software itself, but with the April 3 launch of its iPad — a product that should make MobileMe easier to navigate, easier to manage and more valuable to use,” Ed Moltzen blogs for ChannelWeb.

“The calendaring feature that Apple has demonstrated on iPad is a case in point. On the iPhone or on a web page, MobileMe calendaring options make it tough to want to migrate to it from Google calendaring or Outlook,” Moltzen writes. “It’s a ‘me-too’ application. On the iPhone, you can’t tilt the calendar to ‘landscape’ presentation and you can’t flip through pages like a real calendar book. iPad changes that, and offers just enough graphical-user interface improvements to turn it from ‘me too’ to ‘oh, yeah.’

“MobileMe’s iDisk suddenly becomes a lot more useful, too. Apple provides 20 GB of storage with MobileMe accounts,” Moltzen reports. “iPad will, if all goes according to plan, provide useful access to that cloud-based data. So for someone who buys, say, a 32 GB iPad, you can have access to another 20 GB via MobileMe.”

“iDisk is now the real thing. It’s easy and it works, and its interface is built around the concept of touch computing – – making it unique among offerings now provided by rivals like Microsoft, Google and others. On iPad, it could prove to be a game-changer,” Moltzen reports. “And, importantly, Apple now offers free, 60-day trials for MobileMe… At no cost for two months, it’s almost a no-brainer for the iPad.”

  1. It can only get better. I use it all the time. I trust that my iPhone and my MBP will always have all the up-to-date data. I also really love the gallery app that allows me to have a huge range of photos available to me even though I couldn’t fit them all on my iPhone. I too hope that the touch improvements implemented for the iPad will migrate to my other devices as well.

  2. MobileMe’s calendar syncing alone has been invaluable for my family, with my wife and me on separate laptops and me on an iPhone. Put an appointment in one and it’s quickly on all three, along with the main desktop computer. Syncing four email accounts, contacts and Safari bookmarks is also a lifesaver, as is the granular control (she doesn’t want my email, contacts or bookmarks on her machine but I sync them to all other others). Don’t know how I’d live without it, and I’m looking forward to see how the iPad fits into the mix.

  3. Very pleased with MobileMe, including iDisk, now that Apple has worked out the kinks. Our small business relies on it every day and it comes through consistently. The polish and smooth integration with our Macs and iPhones is key.

  4. Apple should build a server farm to support this. Oh! That is correct, Apple built a BILLION DOLLAR SERVER FARM to do this and much more! And I am sure that it is on line for the iPad release this weekend!

  5. Mobile me is great. I transfer files among my Mac products, and use it for backup of critical files, and my files/email/music is available even at a friends house on their computer. I suspect it is the entrance to Apple’s cloud.

  6. Has anyone at Apple even used Me.com?

The site feels like I’ve stepped in a vat of tar and I have to struggle to get out.

It is nearly useless. I can’t load or move messages, messages won’t print right, I get a new email and click to open it and it takes upwards of 30 seconds to load. I thought this was a growing pain when they made the switch to Me.com but frankly they haven’t done jack. This is my last year unless some miracle happens before October when my account is set to renew. I used to recommend this service, now it’s nearly impossible to do so.

I’ve spent the last 30 minutes trying to send a very simple Email with no attachments and just keep getting the same message “Your message could not be sent. Please try again later.”

I’m done with Apple’s Mobile anything. Going to deactivate my iPhone, my MobileMe account, and move my web site elsewhere. This thread is 2 years long and still NOTHING has improved.

I don’t care if it’s Apple’s fault or AT&T;’s fault, bottom line is I’m not going to continue paying for extremely BAD service and support.

All I can say, is GOOD LUCK with iPAD lunch … Steve’s dream of this being the future has a pretty significant Flaw which has been addressed and apparently isn’t going to be addressed.

  7. Anyone having trouble with slow iDisk transfers should try either Cyberduck (free) or Transmit (shareware).

For some reason, the Finder is utterly hopeless for iDisk use. Maybe it’s because I’m in the UK and all the servers are in the US? Who knows, all I know is my transfers are seriously fast using Transmit.
