“Apple’s iPad is coming to kill us all,” Brian Caulfield writes for Forbes. “And by ‘all’ we mean those of us who have enjoyed tossing bricks at Apple for missing the netbook frenzy of the past two years.”
MacDailyNews Take: All Apple missed was a stupid way to pad PC unit sales and market share numbers during a recession with little, no, or negative profit margins to show for it. A lot of work for nothing yielding a bunch of unsatisfied customers. Great business model. Apple was wise to eschew the “netbook frenzy.” Apple doesn’t make cheap junk.
Caulfield continues, “Investors are already betting iPad sales will exceed the other frenzy seen two years ago, when Apple sold 1.12 million iPhones during its first complete quarter of sales. In fact, in a little less than a year iPad unit sales are expected to exceed the estimated 3 million Kindles that have sold to date.”
MacDailyNews Take: So, now it’s 3 million Kindles (no source given)? Since November 19, 2007? That’s a flop. iPad will outsell that anemic number quicker than most people, including Caulfield seem to think.
Caulfield continues, “iPad sales estimates vary, but they’re all impressive. In a note to investors Tuesday Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes estimated Apple will sell 5 million iPads during the 2010 calendar year. This includes 1.2 million units sold during the quarter ending in June, an estimate Reitzes says ‘could prove conservative.'”
MacDailyNews Take: Could prove conservative? Steve Jobs on a popsicle stick; try “will prove conservative!”
Full article here.
yeah but multitasking….no ports…..no full os x……..
First post, Byatches!!!
Conservative = bad
Regurgitation is for cows
iPhoneEnvy:
You can’t say “First Post” on your second post. You have to take the risk and say it on what you believe to be the first post.
…and look like an idiot if you’re not.
I second Wingsy’s motion.
SJ on a popsicle stick? What does that even mean?!?!
iPhone envy…don’t need ports on an iPad…iPhone proves that. Don’t need OSX…Apple was smart to go with iPhoneOS with some iPad pieces…I’ve only found one instance where I needed 3rd Party multitasking since I picked the original iPhone up the morning it launched. If you had an iPhone and not the envy u might understand better.
I hope that you are aware that great part of the success of netbooks is due to LOW costs. I see the biggest potentital of the iPad as a high-end e-reader, and I find it hard to believe that most people are willing to drop big bucks for such type of device. The bottom line is that the iPad is right in between an iPhone and a laptop – this is an area where being the Jack of All Trades does not pay off. The big question you should be asking is “What would I use this for if I already have an iPhone and a laptop/macbook?”
“We Know How Many Kindles Amazon Has Sold: 240000
The Kindle is such a small part of Amazon’s overall business that the company does not break out how many it’s sold. But we found out anyway: 240000 Kindles …

@Adriano: Prepare for an eye-opening education.
iPad is between a success and another success. I think that = success.
11,494,112 sold worldwide in 2010. 3,000 each to MS, GOOG, Sony, Samsung, LG, HTC, RIMM, MOT, and 100 to Palm.
@Adriano: I already know what I am going to be using the iPad for, sorry you don’t have a clue.
@Wingsy
I was going to say the same thing lol.

To get any glory from the first post, you have to take the chance of making yourself look like a jackass.
What does “Steve Jobs on a popsicle stick” mean? Just wondering.
@ AdrIano
My new iPad is replacing a ten year old G4 cube as my email, web surfing machine when I am at work at half the price of a new iMac.
Get a clue.
@twodales
pretty easy to sell those cubes and still get a decent price for them. It should help out with that iPad purchase.
@Adriano
use the iPad for anything you want. While you think a niche product makes sense, most would tend to disagree. The beauty of the iPad is that it is versatile. The Kindle may work better as a dedicated eReader (which is arguable). However, the iPad will kill it in sales. More people will end up use the iPad as an eReader than the Kindle, plus they will get the added value of all of the other things iPad does.
I’m building a nice mahogany stand for my favorite reading chair; a nice angled perch for my incoming iPad. Presto – a reference screen within easy reach.
Another perch next to my favorite home entertainment seat. “What other movies was she in?”
First!
…Who looks like a jackass?
Second!!!! Ha!
@Adriano…you seem to be lacking in the imagination department. It can be used for sooo many things and a lot of them based oon just convenience. For example…want to read a paper while lounging in a hammock? iPhone is too small and a laptop too bulky. Games…for sure. Business meetings? Perfect. etc etc
Also, think of all those PC users that do not have a Mac laptop.
“Apple will sell 5 million iPads” only if that is all that they can get made. If they can make 20 million, that is how many will be sold!
Where do they dream up this crap from. What is the number of students in the USA? Pick 20% of that as your base and add up from there for the first year. Idiots!
1/2 of every student in college will want one of these. So how many is that?
0.5
i believe it will be the top half of every student that will want one of these
as it may be slightly difficult to maneuver the ipad with the bottom half of every student
@Jersey Trader – or maybe every college student will half want one.
The university experience is going to change so much with these. Oh to get a do over with the modern <strike>toys</strike> tools.
