  1. Aperture is gorgeous. I have seen a few kinks and the initial update from 2 was ‘exciting’, but these issues will all be ironed out with updates like this as they always are with Apple stuff.

    Incredible software.

PS If you run Macs you need to run Aperture. If you are on PC then you need Lightroom – because you have no other choice.

  2. This update seems to have addressed the numerous crashes that I was seeing with Aperture 3 when making adjustments in 64-bit mode. Switching to 32-bit mode seemed to eliminate the crashes prior to the update.

But it still hasn’t addressed the very annoying problem of being unable to use the scroll bar in the browser portion of a browser/viewer split view when a thumbnail is selected in the browser. It’s not that hard of a problem to work around (deselect the thumbnail or switch to full-screen mode) but still very annoying. Aperture 2 had the same problem at one point and I seem to recall that a Mac OS X update fixed the problem so maybe that’s the answer–wait for the next OS X update.

  3. Hopefully this fixes performance issues – downloading now. Will say, seems as if Aperture needs an update like Snow Leopard that focuses on performance and usability and perhaps necessarily minimizes new features. Ap3 awesome, but not quite as *snappy* as it could be.

  4. Glad for the update but I just reimported all my photos (about 10,000 pictures and videos) from Aperture 2 library, the original import never did work right and my processor never stopped. Finally created a new library.

  5. Aperture will fragment your drive like nothing else. Use it for a while and you will see everything you do slow to a crawl – might as well be back in the dark ages of OS9 or Windows XP. This update doesn’t fix this problem.

It’s amazing that Apple doesn’t just discontinue their failed attempt to offer pro level photo editing and management.

iPhoto doesn’t have the features but it is much better than ruining your computer which will happen if you install and use Aperture.

  6. I’m using Aperture 2 about to go to 3, and Apple integration and interface would be big pluses in my book. Lightroom modules seems incongruent like the ‘bridge’ feature in photoshop – just not well implemented. I’ve been through the disk caching issues in Aperture and believe it’s related to ram usage. I only have 2 gigs on my MBP which really is a minimum for any pro work even photoshop. Luckily later than 2008 MBPs can handle 6 gigs of ram, so i’ll just put in a 4 gb chip to have 5gb for now which should fix most problems. Safari is another app where i run out of physical ram, into virtual, where disk caching slows my machine – you need lots of ram ppl.

  7. the integration between Aperture and iphoto alone is worth the price. I use iphoto for basic to mid level task, then switch to Aperture for mid to high level task, and can seamlessly go between them. I you utilize mobile me galleries and apple mail, it really cements the deal.

  8. @rjackb I don’t seem to have that issue with the scroll bar. Just tried it and it works as it should. MP w/10.6.2.

@embarrassment Not having that issue either. 45K photos and my drive doesn’t show very much fragmenting at all.

@C1 I know you’re a big Mac person, but have you given A3 a good try? The conversion quality is now every bit of Adobe’s and usually I find better shadow detail in A3. To each their own, but I personally can’t stand the modal interface of Lightroom. Import, change interface. Develop, change interface, etc… I have found Aperture to always have superior asset management capabilities. I also think the A3 print module has caught up to LR now too, which is the main reason I wanted LR.

  9. I am downloading the update. Last night, after frequent frustration with Aperture 3 crashing, I downloaded the Lightroom 3 Beta. It is not as intuitive as Aperture 3, but it can do all the functions with stability. I thought to myself, “It just works.” Apple really needs to clean up the issues with Aperture.

  10. Too late for Apple David F. They just blew it with Aperture. After 3 versions there still is no hint of stability. Lightroom is the way to go. Funny how this page is filled with ads for Lightroom. MDN knows!
