Myths of Apple’s iPad

RoughlyDrafted Magazine’s Daniel Eran Dilger is dribbling out “Ten Myths of Apple’s iPad.”

So far, we’re on #5 of his 10-part series taking on iPad myths. If you haven’t read them yet:

Ten Myths of Apple’s iPad:
1. It’s just a big iPod touch
2. iPad needs Adobe Flash
3. It’s ad-evil
4. It was over-hyped and under-delivered
5. It’s just a Tablet PC or Kindle

  1. Roughly Drafted is a very good source on Apple info. I think Daniel Eran Obama may be the best technical analyst on Mac products. He understands that if they have any shortcomings, it’s all Bush’s fault.

  2. 90 percent of my friends that have a netbook have either an desktop or laptop and all of them have a cellphone or smartphone. Netbook are design to surf the web, anything else doen on a netbook suck. The ipad is apple version of the netbook lite, fast and with all the apps is going to be much better than any netbook. I personally have an Imac at work and a macbook at home that i never take out (only when i travel). with the ipad i´m thinking of getting a desktop for home and the ipad take around.

  3. LOL Kent,
I like Roughly Drafted, I check it two or three times a day, but for a Rightie like me it can be tedious skimming through his political meanderings.

I don’t begrudge him them though, it’s the tax I pay to read some really informative articles. I suppose there are Lefties who object to MDN’s politics, though MDM isn’t as heavy handed as DED.

  4. No one, not even the most Mac-astute among us have any idea of what the iPad will be in six months. Just look at all the completely unexpected apps for the iPhone. New iPhone apps still blow my mind with their inventiveness.

I agree. Daniel is truly astute at Apple technical and business analysis. He fully understands what he talks about. And he digs deep to expand his understanding. He helps me understand the “gut instincts” I have about Apple. But his political analysis is RoughlyOlberman. About that level of understanding and research. I wouldn’t mind – but I do find it interesting how he will insert a moronic political comment into an otherwise right on tech analysis. Like the proverbial “turd in a punchbowl”. I could have the affect of making his web audience like that of MSNBC. Two guys in raincoats.

  6. @Tom and @ Kent
Can’t you just let it go? Forget political comments in a technical forum. It is so tiresome to wade through that crap to actually learn something. We all have our political slant and no one really needs to hear about it.

  7. Daniel will probably always mix his politics with his Mac punditry. Thankfully, there’s usually one-off comments or discrete parts of his analysis. I don’t mix politics with my writing, but to each their own. He’s still the best Mac writer on web IMO.

  8. Daniel Eran is one of the few technology analysts/bloggers who really does his homework and presents highly informative, well-reasoned and well-documented commentaries on computer technology. He is unabashedly pro-Apple and anti-MS, but his views always have a basis in verifiable fact — he doesn’t just pull things out of the air as we see just about every day in various pieces highlighted by MDN for well-deserved ridicule. As you can tell, I enjoy his work immensely and most importantly, I always learn something from his writings.

Regarding his politics — just as I have criticized MDN for injecting partisan politics into these pages, I really wish Daniel would avoid that path also, as it does absolutely nothing to bolster his credentials as an excellent technology journalist. I can only assume that MDN has a right-ward tilt and benefits from increased traffic to this site when they selectively post items they know will bring the wingnuts out of the woodwork. So here’s a question for MDN and all you MDNers out there (maybe put this up as a poll?):

If MDN offered a reasonably-priced, subscription-based website without the ads and without the occasional political hit-whoring articles, would you subscribe to it?

Count me in with a resounding “YES!”

  9. dear HUGHB. well, MDN is republican. and Rush Limbaugh visits this site regularly. I guess they like recessions. Democrats always come in and mop up the republicans messes, accept this time around republicans won’t let them.

iPad is just a giant ipod touch btw..

  10. 3. It’s ad-evil

Thats a funny one MDN, since I just loaded AdSubtract.css to my Safari preferences to delete all those annoying adverts you include on this site, loaded with that pesky, buggy Adobe Flash. What a difference. Now I’m wondering if it will deal with that pop-down advert you stealthily introject into my browsing experience.

  11. @ Dave Smith

You say “Democrats always come in and mop up the republicans messes, accept this time around republicans won’t let them.”

Democrats fully control the Entire Government. They don’t need a single Republican vote to enact legislation. They have huge Congressional majority and a fillibuster proof Senate majority. With that, they have so far refused to end the wars, close Guantanemo, enact Health Care, enact Cap and Trade. They have nationalized the Auto Industry and quadrupled the budget deficit. So, they are using their power. And the Republicans can’t stop them – even though all rational people wish they could.

  12. I still read Daniel. His analysis of Apple is too good. And I like him. I would encourage all to read and learn from him. I just think he could benefit from some open minded reading of the founding documents and the political philosophy behind them. The Declaration of Independence and the Federalist Papers are stunning in their understanding of human rights, their origin, the proper limits of government, how Federalism actually works. These principles are more important than whatever a Mac can bring, as good as that is. I have a dream – one day Daniel’s technical mind will help his political mind overcome the blind spots it suffers from.

  13. I’m thinking of getting an iPad because my Macbook is so clunky. Keyboard navigation is terrible – with Page Up requiring a 3 key combination that I can never remember. Menus are not keyboard navigable. 4 special keys at the bottom left with incomprehensible combinations that are not intuitive. The front edge of the unibody is so sharp it cuts into my hand when I use the trackpad. I could go on and on and on…
