Still nothing that says “BUY ME”… the iPhone or Touch is a LOT more portable than this.
What am I getting that so many of you aren’t. I have an iPhone 3GS and it’s great for many things. However, it’s to small to be a reader and even the games, as fun as they are, are limited due to size. People are looking for portability. Trust me, I am an older college grad student and I hear this and see this in the younger gens. It’s portable but a helluva lot better than the iPhone/iPod touch. 0.5 inch thick and 1.5 lbs? Are you kidding me. Slips into a bag a purse, won’t even notice it. You may all be geeks as I am and, perhaps desire more power, but the average user is going to love this.
Think of all the people who would love to use an iPhone but the screen size is too small; the elderly, those with vision problems, etc. A larger iPhone without the phone capabilities is going to be perfect for those folks. Depending on price point, I may ditch my iPhone and go with the iPad combined with a regular cellphone; I really don’t make that many calls on my phone anyway, most of my iPhone use is checking the Internet and using the apps.
I am surprised at the harshness here. That’s a B-u-tiful form factor in my opinion. What have you seen that’s as fine? Yes, it is a big iPhone, but netbooks are selling like crazy – that’s what John Q Public wants.
So far things are following the typical Apple announcement path: Start with a recap, present the device, review the familiar and then get to the revolutionary and new….I’m waiting for the revolutionary and new here. It is coming, right? I mean, he did say that if there was to be a third category it had to do things better. What’s better so far? I guess just the bigger size so far. I’m still holding out hope that there’s a few more tricks up the sleeve to come.

@Oredaze – You may be at least partially right there. Apple has obviously been entering into the gaming world. That was always the thing “held against me” by windows people – yeah your Mac is good, but where’s the gaming. Honestly, I’m not much of a gamer, at least not the shoot ’em up stuff. But I enjoy it from time-to-time. This may be the first big leap, as the iPhone/iPod was just a little too small to make a real impact.

It’s getting a little better for the likes of me: now demoing iWorks – that’s what I need – a very small, usable, real Mac… maybe this thing will meet my needs after all… still waiting and watching. BTW, Gizmodo has VERY good coverage; I’m reading several, as well as posting here…

@cartoonasaur – because it’s a BIG iPhone. I have a Macbook Pro, a Macbook Air, a Mac Pro, and an iPhone 3GS. But this is actually more down the line of what I’ve been wanting for day-to-day use and portability. I love it’s looks, it’s smooth UI (based on what we are seeing).
I think it’s going to take actually holding one in the hands and putting it through the paces to convince people; when the iPhone was first announced I was, “Ho hum, who cares?” Then I saw it in the store and played around with it a bit, and was more intrigued…and now I don’t know how I got by without it. I think the iPad is going to be the same deal. And with the applications, you might find new uses that Apple couldn’t even imagine.
It’s got iWork, so there must be a way to print…
Oh, and if an enterprising 3rd party developer came up with a portable Bluetooth keyboard, similar to what was used with Palm devices, it could actually become a decent computer for folks who have to do a lot of writing on the road but don’t want to drag along a laptop.

Ok, been following (until my landline phone rang, and knocked my DSL offline); at $499, doing what it can do, I’m in – no, not right away (hey, I like to keep me lucres to meself as long as possible! Definitely not on cutting edge about buying). But the iPad seems to be able to do everything I want in something very small! Yes, Apple is moving in the right direction for me, again! Can’t wait to see it at local Apple store…
Considering the iPod touch is $299 for the 32GB version, for just 300 dollars more you get the larger screen real estate — for folks who want to watch a lot of movies or play larger games, it’ll be well worth the investment.

When you look at the unsubsidized prices for an iPhone ($699 for the 32GB if you’re not eligible for any of the AT&T;special prices) the iPad is more than comparable. For those folks who already have cell service they’re happy with, they’ll be able to get the benefits of a larger screen without having to go through the hassles of changing carriers. And for those folks who plan on just checking email and the occasional Internet access, $14.99 for 250MB is awesome.

Have to say I’m a bit underwhelmed. It’s basically a big touch. Can’t replace a laptop, can’t replace the iPhone. Although there will be some who get the iPad and move back to a standard telephone, this won’t have the GPS functions and will still be a PITS to carry around (especially for us purseless folk). No camera, and no phone service. No evidnce of a microphone, even, so no access to voice control, no voice chat (or Skype). And the battery life is okay, but not stellar.
I have to say that the Kindle is moving back up my wish list.
I am always a little skeptical of overblown pre-release claims, but I think this will be a game changer for a few reasons:
1. The price point is really good for such a device. Hell the max cofiguration with 65Gb RAM, WiFi + 3G is under $900! This will appeal to a wide range of possible customers, from the cash-strapped older folks who just want to access mail and see grandkids photos, to the high-flying exec who wants to both show off his latest gadgetry and needs to edit Powerpoint (excuse me, Keynote) presentations in Business class, which brings me to…
2. The presence of iWork. This could be the beginning of the first major chink in the MS Office monopoly. How many of those execs, who otherwise think they need M$ for the enterprise, will get one of these, find they want to edit a Word or Powerpoint document, learn there’s no MS Office for iPad but there is this nifty iWork which is even better, and pretty soon will be talking to their corporate IT people about why they don’t have iWork on the office desktop? Also how many regular folks who get the low end pad and have never tried iWork will think “Hey, for $10 extra, might as well give it a shot” and then find going back to using M$ Office feels like having a tooth pulled?
@Dave — I do most of my Internet when I’m out of WiFi range, especially checking transit schedules and the like, so I was thinking of that functionality. (In fact, checking bus schedules would be even easier on the larger screen — some of them require a lot of scrolling around.) For folks like my in-laws who’d mainly be using it at home with their in-home wireless system, the $499 one would be perfect.
I’m not a video chatter, so iChat doesn’t really matter to me; I think it’s going to have to wait for a design update so they can fit the camera on the front (and make sure they have adequate quantities that work). It’s not going to serve everyone’s every need, but it’s got a lot of potential, enough that I’d like to get in on the cutting edge later this year.
Where are the cameras for video chat?!
I like the idea of being able to buy each element of iWork separately; I’m not in the business world so I don’t need Keynote, and I don’t do a lot of number crunching so Numbers isn’t a necessity, but I’m a writer and would love to be able to take Pages on the road with me for my novels and poetry. I do have WriteRoom on the iPhone and use it in conjunction with Scrivener for ideas that hit me while I’m away from home, but the iPhone keyboard is limiting for extended typing; the keyboard dock would solve that problem when I’m hanging out at Starbucks or the library.

We have pretty good wifi coverage here in my area, so maybe I was just spoiled. lol… I’d probably opt for the 3g capable one, anyway, since it offers both options…
iPad costs too much–seems like an expensive toy rather than a solution that could actually replace a notebook. It is no more useful, though much more expensive than a netbook. (yes, it can do a lot more than a netbook and does everything much better, but still doesn’t do what a notebook can)
Due to its small storage capacity, iPad won’t even replace my iPod classic, and it can’t make calls, so keep your iPhone, too
Someone needs to make a keyboard for this device with the same overall dimensions so that it can be used like a laptop with a detachable screen. The Apple keyboard dock would be unwieldy to carry around.
Price too high? When “analysts” were expecting it to start out at $999 and up, $499 for the entry level one is much more reasonable. I can get 4 times the storage on an iPad than on my current iPhone, and for not that much more than a new iPhone would cost me. And since the phone part is what I use the least, I can just get a regular cell phone for that, without all the major whistles and bells.
Sure, if I want to do heavy duty video or photo editing, I’ll drag along my MacBook or wait till I get home to the iMac. But if I just want to do some writing, or check the Internet, or play some games, or watch a movie, the iPad is going to work just fine especially when traveling.
@macintush: I’d expect one of Apple’s usual 3rd party developers to be thinking along those lines about now; Bluetooth enabled keyboards were pretty prevalent in Palm’s heyday, and wouldn’t take much to come up with one that would work with the iPad. Watch Kensington or Belkin just to name a couple.
If everyone owned teeny-tiny TVs and all of a sudden someone starts selling 52 inch screen TVs, would anyone be so stupid as to say, “Hey, why would anyone want one of those, it’s just a bigger version of what we already have, I mean, so what?”

Kindle DX is $489 and looks like an outdated calculator next to the iPad. It’s going to take a little time to understand the full capabilities of this device.
This will sell in the millions. The ability to hang this on a wall in offices or bars streaming online content like major league baseball or football games out of market to a large screen tv is awesome.
I also think this device will switch millions of pc users to the mac platform for good. If i had the money i would buy more apple stock today.

Considering netbooks dont really sell and are very limited with low battery life, Small screens, weigh more then this and are much thicker and cant do the ebooks and all the gaming this can it already outweighs them.
Everyone keeps saying multitasking but i dont see that being a big deal. multitasking will come – but seriously for the average Joe user is that really necessary – the ones that want all of this stuff are the geeks and techheads – and by my last count – there are far more regular cats out there than techies
I can see colleges having these and kids buying them and having all their textbooks loaded on there and then no more carrying around 30 pounds of books. just 1 ipad and your set. Plus the future is here books can be more then just lifeless, You could have books like in some of the future tv shows where you are reading along and say your reading a history book and you are reading a passage on World War II. There could be a video there that gives you an actuall video of someone speaking or something happening that is right about what you were reading about.
The big news here is not just the ipad but 10 hours battery life and ON TOP OF THAT Apple designed their own chip. That is huge. Just think the iPhone 4G could have the new Apple chip in it and down the road what if apple could design a chip faster and less power hungry then Intel but still compatible with intel and put it in their laptops and just blast away everything else in its class.
There is much more here then just the ipad itself. This is just the start of many things. APple is right NO ONE can do what they can. They designed the chip, the ipad itself and the software to run on it. This could be huge in the future and bring the Mac up and put the PC at less then 50%

Some people have vision, and some don’t. I, too, am shocked to see how many people don’t seem to get the iPad at all. That’s their problem.
The iPad is one of those rare products that even the word “revolutionary” just barely describes. Personally, I expect this device to totally revolutionize the way people access the digital world. For many, it will replace the laptop and maybe even the big-screen tv. At the very least, it is sure to become the portable computing device of choice for students and road warriors the world over.
Some people really have no imagination!
Over hyped, no doubt. But when you consider the low end is just $100 more than the high end Touch, this thing has a future.
Not to mention that Apple has finally broken the stranglehold that the cellular industry has always had on their customers. The iPad 3G model will work on every compatible network without a contract. This is huge!
The one thing I’m disappointed in is not camera. In fact, I think it needs a front and back one.
That said, the price is great. It’s not just a toy. Once folks figure out how to build cool apps for it… and use it to consume media… it’ll be a real challenge for anyone to complete. Others simply don’t have the single experience and dare I say “ecosystem.”
Not sure I’ll get one right away, but I imagine within 12 months (maybe version 2).
I’m also interested to see if it can handle multiple users with parental controls.
Looking at the keyboard issue, it appears that since the dock connector is on the short end, the iPad can only be positioned vertically for use with a keyboard until some 3rd party solution is developed. I could really see using this if there’s a good keyboard solution that allows horizontal orientation and some flexibility positioning it for better ergonomics. One nice thing about laptops is the ability to adjust the screen angle. If you don’t want to hold this in your hand – in a cafe for instance – then you have to set it on the table. I think one reason tablets haven’t been all that successful is, ironically, issues of ergonomics. Laptops are just a better ergonomic solution most of the time.
Of course, Apple’s OS is beautiful, and that counts for a lot.
