I like my El Gato Hybrid. It offers DVRing and the tuner is terrific. I can even snag free HD programming using an OTA antenna.
El Gato’s iPhone/Touch app gives me even greater control by providing me TV Guide access from which I can scan programming and record with the touch of my Touch. The EyeTV software also streams live television to my Touch.
Don’t forget Boxee and Plex..

No matter what gods Apple’s fans pray to, Steve is extremely unlikely to wave his magic wand and turn the Apple TV into a TiVo.
Except that the EyeTV won’t record the vast majority of digital cable channels.
Not their fault — just the way the cable companies have it set up.
The software is beautiful and so well thought-out. The hardware works perfectly. I love my EyeTV, but it doesn’t get much use, since everything I want to record seems to be on a digital channel.

Buy the hardware you need to do the jobs you want done- In this case EyeTV fits the bill- Then you have free tv.

I don’t really watch television. I’m not being smug, I’m just sayin’.
However, I have Netflix and a Roku box and a PS3, so I can stream a whole mess of stuff to my Mac or my television. They even have the entire run of Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the first three seasons of Dexter, which my wife discovered and is now eerily addicted to. I worry about that. I really do.
I have an ElGato EyeTV hybrid. It works great. I wish my cable company broadcast more digital channels unencrypted, but them’s the breaks.
TV is toxic garbage. All of it.
Maybe that’s why it’s not an Apple thing?
The US Cable industry has tried all it can do to kill CableCard and if they would license it to ElGato, all would be well with the universe.
You can view the encrypted video on your Mac by running it out of the converter box and then through your EyeTV. My old 200 does this fine.
You can also do it with Firewire (as I’m sure many of you know)

Tera was the greatest Mac journalist I’ve yet seen- had credibility and integrity, as well as being an incredible writer in general. Her loss is still painful to me, and I didn’t know her.

On the one I watch with, I don’t. On my other machines, I run Snitch, and when I have watched I haven’t noticed anything.
So EyeTV is this great SW that is designed to work with various firewire and USB tuners except there is one problem, I no longer get over-the-air analog so that tuner is now obsolete. And my digital Eye-TV tuner only gets unencrypted cable which isn’t very much. So what’s the point.
So, why can’t Eye-TV use a CableCard or, better yet, talk directly to my Motorola Set Top Box, It is also a firewire based tuner.
The current state of cable TV is a mess.

The EyeTV app is working well on my iPod Touch. I can tune to all of the broadcast TV channels, and one channel of DirecTV. I’m investigating some of the solutions for controlling the DirecTV channel, like the WiFi-connected devices for universal infrared remote control.
When hardware and content share the same parent, software suffers.

I’m a big fan of Eye TV. For Mac users there’s nothing better. As to Apple putting DVR into anything, fogettaboutit!. Won’t happen.
Eye TV is such wonderfully seamless software. Works on a Mac, works on iPod and iPhone. Does a Mac mini with Eye TV make for a good DVR? How does it compare to TiVo? Or the cable company’s DVR price?
First Apple fixed MUSIC (with iPod)…. then it fixed Cell Phones (with iPhone)…. Then it will fix PUBLICATIONS (iSlate)…. Then it will fix/axe TV CONTENT with…. APPLE TV!!!
