Google to rent limited number of movies through YouTube

Apple Online Store“Google Inc., which has dabbled with different ways of turning YouTube into a serious money-maker since acquiring it in 2006, said Wednesday it will begin making a limited number of films available for rental through the video service,” John Letzing reports for MarketWatch. “Google said in a posting on a company Website that it will make five films from the 2009 and 2010 Sundance Film festivals available for rent for U.S. users starting Jan. 22, and lasting through Jan. 31.”

MacDailyNews Take: zzzzzz… Huh? Oh, sorry.

Letzing continues, “‘In addition to these five films, a small collection of rental videos from other U.S. partners across different industries, including health and education, will be made available in the weeks ahead,’ Google said.”

MacDailyNews Take: zzzzzz… Wha? Oh, boy, Ambien’s in trouble.

Letzing continues, “The company said it will invite “a small group of partners across other industries” to participate in its film-rental business in the coming weeks.

MacDailyNews Take: YAGB. (Yet Another Google Beta).

Letzing continues, “Google said the films will be available for rental through its Google Checkout payment service, though it did not disclose specific rental fees.”

  1. Apple will have to react to this major move by Google. This is probably the move that will push Apple to offer porn in the iTMS. Apple wont let Google beat them to the big money there.

  2. YouTube won’t be pulled from atv. Aplle will just outshine google. I am actually liking this battle between the two. Yes schmidt is a rat like gates. But this time apple has the guns to fight back without being hit from behind. They are making apple step up their game by moving productivity faster. And I’m sure google will sh!t their pants of envy once the tablet is announce.

  3. Steve Jobs has to at this point be getting pissed at himself for putting trust and confidence in Eric Schmidt.

Lookout Eric you’re a bespectacled mole whose lenses are about to be shattered…

  4. Steve was right: Android, etc have hurt them more than they’ve helped and pushed their partners and those who want to be partners away. They can recover their image by taking action to stop stuff like this. They may be trying to hedge their bets as search isn’t guaranteed to be the most important thing on the internet in the future.

  5. Google’s primary and dominant business will ALWAYS be ad sales. Whether this comes from search results pages, g-mail, YouTube, Google Maps, Blogs, Picasa, whichever. Any and all other initiatives (including Android) are ancillary tools to drive ad sales. In other words, they aren’t entering these different markets (browser market, mobile market, video rental market) in order to actively compete in them with incumbent players. They don’t care for the market share there, as long as the service provides one more avenue for selling advertising.

Nonetheless, even if the direct competition isn’t the primary goal, obviously, they’ll still want to grab market share in order to grab as many eyeballs as possible. Still, though, since it isn’t the primary objective, the effort and strategy in capturing market share won’t be as strong and as clearly defined as it would for the players for whom this is primary business.

Bottom line: with respect to this particular issue (Google movie rentals), Apple won’t need to make any strategic (nor even tactical) changes. This is barely a blip on their radar. As for Google’s activities in general (Android, mobile advertising, etc), Apple has all the necessary chops to outmaneuver Google.

  6. You guys have this all wrong (except, of course, PreDrag who virtually always gets it right)- all this Apple vs. Google was by design. Google is no threat to Apple and never will be. they have no iTunes, they have no 100M credit cards, they have no thousands of films, TV show, etc. etc. etc.

And they have no hope of catching up. They will forever be skating to where the puck is. Apple will always be way out in front of them.

Let them copy and validate Apple’s path. People will (by and large) choose the leader, not the also-ran (all the moreso when that leader is Apple). I say, more power to Google- they just make Apple look good (and Micro$oft even worse).
