AT&T preparing for the end of iPhone exclusivity?

Apple Online Store “Who said that the Consumer Electronics Show was just meant to be a showcase for technology and consumer electronics companies? One of this week’s biggest presentations came from none other than dowdy old AT&T,” Eric Jhonsa writes for The Motley Fool.

“Ma iPhone announced its support for a slew of new smartphones that will become available over the course of the year,” Jhonsa reports. “These devices include five Android models, one of which will be Dell’s first North American offering, and two unnamed Palm models.

Jhonsa writes, “AT&T clearly meant for its presentation to be a feel-good event showing its commitment to consumer choice. But for me, at least, it raised more questions than it answered.”

MacDailyNews Take: The answer to the headline is: They oughta be. iPhone OS devices will be on carriers other than AT&T in the U.S. this year.

  1. It’s pretty much that every other article now adays is analyst this analyst that. Seriously How many analyst predictions do we need. How many times did we hear of a verizon iPhone last year from analyst? Too many analyst trying to predict a company that plays its card very very close to their chest.

I love me some MDN. I check it a fews times a day at work and home, I like their little quips, its a good take on news about Apple, we are all fans, I just don’t want them to go down the road as the band wagon Analyst and make predictions that are 50/50 on the believable scale. and someone iCal when them when AT&T;resigns another year of Exclusivity to give at&t;one more year to prove their network is worth keeping the deal, it’s a risk maybe, then again AT&T;(cingular) took a big risk too. HMMM…

  2. MDN is being very careful with his prediction right now: iPhone OS devices will be on carriers other than AT&T;in the U.S. this year.

What he is predicting is a tablet will be able to run on other carriers in addition to ATnT. He’s very, very careful not to say the iPhone will run on other carriers, just the iPhone OS. If it turns out that Apple does let other carriers have the iPhone, then he was right. If not, he’s still right because the iPhone OS is going to be on the Apple Tablet.

I don’t respect a prediction as wishy-washy as this. MDN, the issue is wether or not other carriers will get the iPhone. Period. You’re just trying to cover your ass like a weak Fox news personality. (Note that I didn’t say “journalist”. They don’t employ those over there at Fox).

  3. I think that all you at&t;haters that are on verizon, are going to be very surprised at how bad verizon will handle the iphone–none of the carriers are ever prepared for the overwhelming demand on their cell phone services. dropped calls on verizon? you bet, no signal? you bet–you will all be verizon haters before it’s over. As for me AT&T;is just fine–what you seem to forget is that no one can keep 15 million constantly babbling-on-their-cell phones customers happy all the time. At least AT&T;is scrambling and putting things in place, let’s see how much effort verizon makes to placate unhappy iphone users–or will they treat you all the way they treated steve when he first offered them the iphone?? If I was steve, I would run verizon out of business–just for shits and giggles!
