This is very good. Brazilians love Macs. Brazil had the first Macintosh clone in the 80’s. It was reverse engineered by a company called Unitron. Do a search, it’s an interesting story.
and why do we care about Brazil?
No need to care about Brazil.
You need to care about your Apple stock and how this new online store in a country of 190,000,000 inhabitants will help Apple earn more profits.
By the way, thanks for perfectly fulfilling the stereotypical ignorant American.
You made my day!
LOL,
You’re correct, the impact will be felt by anyone investing in AAPL. Brazil is a huge country and I’m surprised that this market hasn’t yet been tapped by Apple.
BTW, what is the correct greeting? Ola is Spanish, Brazilians speek Portugese, correct?
Their president is a socialist and a communist, probably also a fascist. Apple should stay out of Brasil. We should nuke them. </wingnutmode>
Congrats Brazil!
AFAIK, olá is correct portuguese word. Hola is the Spanish word. (With a silent H, so they sound pretty much the same.)
CRIB=China, Russia, India, Brazil. Huge populations with emerging wealth; at least before the Great Recession.
@silverhawk, Yours Smugly et al.
Yep. We better have some fun before that Great Recession!
From those 4 countries, I believe their importance to Apple to be in the following order:
1. China (you can’t outnumber them no matter what you try)
2. Brazil (Apple products are getting more sought after day after day)
3. Russia
4. India (I tend to see them too entrenched in M$ land to change…)
Remember: Apple sells some 50% of their products outside the USA, i. e., Apple would be half the size it is were it not for external markets.
I’ve been using Macs since the dark ages of the company (1995) and have made at least a dozen people move over to the Mac from Windows like I did.
Cheers and olá (with an accute accent on the a letter since it is indeed Portuguese, not Spanish).
Hi Brazilian,
Try this when you buy a NEW Mac, give your OLD Mac to a Windows friend or family. I do that and they never look back to Windows.
But what percentage of that 190,000,000 people could afford an iphone, never mind paying for music ?
I spent a lot of time there and it seemed as though the 10% elite had 90% of the wealth. I guess I just answered my own question, 19,000,000. Its just a shame that 10% couldn’t give a damn about the other 90%.
Hi everybody.
Good news for Brazilian mac fans.
Hi @mullum
I dont think USA is different. Inequality is a real big “all America” problem.
From: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20060529/friedman
“The total net worth of all Americans in 1989 was $25 trillion (in 2004 dollars). Of that amount, the top 1 percent owned 30 percent, or $7.775 trillion. The bottom half owned 3 percent of the total, or $763 billion.
Fifteen years later, in 2004, the total wealth of all Americans had doubled to $50.25 trillion. The top 1 percent of the population now owns 33.4 percent of the total, or $16.774 trillion. Their percentage share of the total has increased by more than 3 percent in fifteen years. At the same time, the total wealth owned by the bottom 50 percent increased to $1.278 trillion, but its percentage of total wealth declined from 3 percent to 2.5 percent in the same time period.”
Hope such things change for all of us.
BTW, In Brazil such inequality is decreasing, in USA it is increasing.
@mullum
That exact same sentiment could be said about the U.S. also. Except that it’s about 5% that holds 95% of this country’s wealth. And they too don’t give a crap about the other 95%. Funny thing is, they’re all republicans, too.
Hi Jersey Trader,
I already did this 3 times -:)
The first time, when I gave a Performa from way back when to my sister, who thus was fortunate enough to never have to use a Windows PC.
The second time, an iMac Bond Blue for a good friend.
And the third time, my old Mac mini G4 for my brother-in-law.
But I believe my biggest claim to fame in the field would be an old friend that I converted to the Mac and, since he was a graphic designer and graphics design instructor and just loved his new Mac, made his old workplace, a training center, create a Mac only lab (with the help of Apple Brazil, which we went then to visit with great pleasure).
That lab was dismantled 2 years after its inception due to one of the managers there (a MSCE kinda guy) getting too pissed by my friend bolstering it was the only lab that did not need calling support. LOL.
After he left, he joined another training center where Macs are more than welcome since they focus on graphics design, video production etc.
Through his classes in both places he probably converted more than a 100 people to Macs over the years.
And all that started after I told him to stop suffering with his PC (Corel 2.0, Photoshop 3.0 etc.) constant crashes and move to a Mac.
As you say: he did it and never looked back. No one does.
