Microsoft pulls plug on all non-touch Zunes

“I met with the Zune folks today and one bit of information than I can discuss immediately is that the Zune HD will be the only device type going forward: The current Zune models, the Zune 8, 16 80, and 120, have all been discontinued,” Paul Thurrott reports for SuperSite Blog.

  2. This is Microsoft backing out of the music player business and trying to avoid embarrassment and investor backlash. So they are going to introduce their “best effort” with Zune HD to say, “Hey – we are still in the music player game. Zune was not a waste of time and resources.” Zune HD will also serve as a prototype and test bed for Windows Mobile and related apps.

    But at some point, maybe a year from now, when no one at all cares, Zune HD will also be quietly discontinued. And Microsoft will hope that no one remembers Zune, just like they hope that no one remembers Windows Vista.
