Enterprise IT: How to manage Apple iPhones with Microsoft Exchange

Apple Online Store “When iPhones first started trickling into my office, I was a little apprehensive. At the time they only supported IMAP and POP3 for e-mail, which can be tricky to support in an Exchange environment. Two generations later, the iPhone has become a robust enterprise-grade mobile device,” Michael Scalisi reports for PC World.

“Slowly but surely, my users have been migrating from their BlackBerrys to iPhones. I’m happy to help them make the transition. iPhones are simply easier to integrate with Microsoft Exchange,” Scalisi reports.

“ActiveSync on the iPhone is natively supported on both Exchange Server 2003 and 2007,” Scalisi reports. “If you are already running an OWA server configured to use SSL with port 443 open on your firewall, you have already done the hard part.”

  1. You got me on the # of users!
I am “safe” though as IT still has a hard-on for MS.
I can now say that any limitations are in the hands of MS.
    Well, mostly.
Apple has made more gains with the iPhone to integrate than MS has to equal BES options.
I’d like to see them both continue to improve – I think the model of supporting both iPhones and BBs is a good one.
Now that the dust has settled, I see you’re not a troll.
I apologize for the earlier posts saying as much.

  2. No worries, I get tired of hearing users talk about mobility support who clearly never have supported anything in any fashion a day in their life so yeah I get worked up about it and come off harshly.

I think everyone who licenses ActiveSync is in a tough spot as it gives you the hook into Exchange but Microsoft is slow to put new functionality into it as they want to sell seats for MDM 2008. So if EAS as it is in Exchange meets your needs – your golden but when you get beyond that and need more control / security you find yourself in a really tough spot. So yes having a mix BES / EAS makes the most sense right now.

Check out http://www.mobileIron.com .. very interesting product that seems like a glorified GUI but is definately the direction enterprise needs as mobility expands and usage moves to multiple device platforms.
