North Carolina lawmakers OK tax incentives for Apple Inc.

“The state House voted overwhelmingly Tuesday in favor of tax incentives designed to lure Apple Computer [sic] to North Carolina,” Benjamin Niolet reports for Th Charlotte Observer.

“The bill has already cleared the Senate but needs one more vote in the House before it would go to Gov. Bev Perdue for her signature. The House voted 81-31 for the bill,” Niolet reports.

“Apple is considering the state for an East Coast operations hub, according to people familiar with the discussions,” Niolet reports. “The center would bring about 50 workers, although another 250 contractors could get jobs. The facility could grow to employ more as its mission expands.”

“The bill is written to apply to only one company. The company would have to make $1billion in capital investments within nine years,” Niolet reports. “Analysts say the benefit would cost the state $3 million a year initially and $12.5 million annually in later years.”
