Why Apple + Twitter makes zero sense

“Apple is one of the companies that’s reportedly been sniffing around Twitter, the hot S.F. startup du jour. But unless Apple is planning to significantly shift its Internet focus, it makes zero sense for Apple to buy Twitter,” Dan Frommer writes for SIlicon Alley Insider.

• Owning an unprofitable messaging service will not help Apple sell more computers, software, or gadgets
• It doesn’t fit the pattern of Apple acquisitions, which have all strengthened Apple’s core business, not taken it into vastly different markets

Frommer writes, “Does it make sense that people from Apple should be friendly with people from Twitter? Absolutely. Does it make sense for Apple to own Twitter? Not as far as we can tell.”

Ian Paul writes for PC World, “While an Apple acquisition of Twitter may sound interesting, it doesn’t make sense to me. It’s true that Apple has a habit of snapping up smaller, successful companies; however, Apple also has a habit of buying companies that compliment its strengths.”

“Sorry folks, but Twitter has rejected offers from Facebook and possibly Google,” Paul writes. “Those two companies were in a position to use Twitter to enhance their businesses and even make some money off of the micro-blogging company. Apple, by comparison, has no clear motive to buy Twitter, and no possible use for Twitter under Apple’s current business plan.”

Paul writes, “Like any other Apple rumor, the company’s acquisition [prospects] have a tendency to venture into the ridiculous.”
