Geek tweets as Woz competes on ‘Dancing With The Stars’

“When the latest cast of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ was announced, the reality show had its typical roster, said Chris Harrington, a self-described computer geek,” April Bethea reports for The Charlotte Observer. “And then there was Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple Computer Inc.”

“Wozniak stood out among all the athletes, TV and music personalities, Harrington said,” Bethea reports. “So last month, Harrington created a fan page for Wozniak on the social networking site Twitter to help drum up votes.”

“He’s ‘a true geek,’ said Harrington, 36, technology director for Luquire George Andrews in Charlotte. ‘And there’s no better way to create a voting group than to get on a social network,'” Bethea reports.

“Harrington spread word about his effort — twitter.com/votewoz — by contacting 10 tech people nationwide. Within a couple weeks, he had 200 followers,” Bethea reports. “From there, it has become a viral hit. Sunday evening, Harrington had nearly 50,000 followers, and he has been interviewed about the effort by USA Today and Wired magazine.”
