Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ diet secrets

“In an industry where so many leaders resemble talking sides of beef, Jobs’ trim figure is noticeable,” Brian Caulfield reports for Forbes.

“What’s his secret? The skinny, so to speak, on the Apple campus is Jobs’ gaunt frame says as much about his diet as his health. Jobs lunches with the troops in the Cupertino, Calif.-based company’s cafeteria–a place packed with the likes of fresh sushi and Smart Water,” Caulfield reports.

“And while Apple employees eat healthy, Jobs takes it to an extreme, one employee says, eating dark green vegetables such as broccoli and asparagus, grilled or steamed. Jobs has been a vegetarian for years but his enthusiasm for green may have taken on an extra dimension since his brush with cancer. Jobs has surgery in 2004 to treat pancreatic cancer, and, again, earlier this year, according to The New York Times, to address ‘a problem that was contributing to a loss of weight.’ The veg-heavy diet, however, likely will not help him pack on any pounds. ‘No wonder he’s cranky all the time,’ one Apple insider says,” Caulfield reports.

“Jobs’ diet is only the latest example of a high-profile technologist using mind to master matter. It’s one of the reasons technologists so often end up overweight,” Caulfield reports.

  1. I have been on the Mac diet for years, stop in at MacDonalds Pick Up a couple of Macs (with Cheese and Bacon). Go home and plop my fat ass in front of another Mac or MacBook and read about all the other Fat guys.

  2. Finally, something I can comment on that I’ve actually done: lost 100 lbs since August 2007. Down to 175 which isn’t bad. I’m eating whatever I want, just a lot less of it. I’d like to eat healthier sometimes but I’m just not that big of a fan (heh) of many vegetables. I’ll eat them if they’re there but I don’t go out of my way. Probably something to do with my work schedule.

  3. Maginary
I remember hearing that line, and yes, it is very funny!
As far as dieting, I cut way back on sodium, sugar, HFCS, and carbs. I seem to have more energy, which in turn, helps me burn even more fat.

(but I do love me some purple hull peas, snap beans, okra and fresh corn…)

  4. Cancer or not, Steve JObs is on the smart path. 25% of Americans are obese. Most eat crap, processed foods and way too much meat in their diets, and nowhere near enough grains, fruits and vegetables. Meat-heavy diets lead to an increased risk of heart disease and cancer — this is a proven fact. We live in a society where people would rather deal with health problems on the receiving end — as in, take medication, get surgery, stay in the hospital — thandda take proactive, preventive steps to avoid the occurrence of such problems in the first place. As smart a businessman as JObs may be, his decision to adhere to a healthy, vegetarian diet is likely the smartest move he’s ever made.

  5. The problem with weight loss is: BEER.

    And wine.

It seems you have to be a teetotaler if you really want to lose weight, which is very depressing. Another reason for legalisation. Smoke the good stuff instead of drinking, and shave hundreds of calories from your diet. Not to mention being much happier…

  6. I think vegetarians are great. Just think about it, in time these people may evolve to the point they can live on grass alone. Then if something would ever kill off the cattle, we will still have something to herd and eat.

  7. Lost 33 lbs over the course of the last 8 months. Reduced my intake of bread, sugar, rice, and noodles while walking 1-2 miles a day around my neighborhood.

Never felt better. Everyone should try this from time to time.

  8. All of this is just to keep the health issue in play. It’s probably microcrud FUD. None of us mac faithful worry about S.J.’s health. He will rise again 3 day’s after he dies… Just like Elvis, and Morrison, Cobain, and ….

  9. Apparently, he’s not been a vegan or full-fledged vegetarian since the 2004 operation. His doctor apparently ordered him to “Eat fish”. That would make him a pisco-vegetarian.

“Pisco-vegetarians eat vegetables PLUS fish. Not really vegetarians, but …”

  10. apparently Steve Jobs is a hardcore vegetarian at a minimum, and probably a vegan and buddhist. actually i’m just guessing here, but it is possible he would flat out ignore such unresponsive and cavalier advice, to not eat a proper diet.
