  1. To all of our Canadian iPhone fans. This is on Macworld UK, I don’t believe our British friends to April Fools stuff.

Apple may have a medium-term plan to introduced the iPhone in Canada, breaking a stalemate position with local incumbent, Rogers Telecom,

Rogers Telecom has been the most likely network partner for an iPhone launch in Canada. That’s mainly because the company is the only network in the country offering support for EDGE networks, required for using the iPhone.

A deal between Apple and Rogers has been much speculated on, but has been a long time coming. The deadlock seems set to resolve itself with the entrant of a new company, Niagara Networks, which is bidding for bandwidth in the country.

Niagara Networks is a previously unknown company that won’t reveal where its funding is coming from, citing “confidentiality agreements”. The 9 to 5 Mac website believes the company is being secretly supported by Apple’s US network partner, AT&T;.

Should this speculation be correct, Apple and AT&T;may be choosing to avoid dealings with Rogers Telecom in order to institute a new provider that’s happy to offer iPhone in Canada.

The “Bet” ad did not show a black person calling the iPhone owner. It showed a black person’s photo that is shown the Wikipedia Basketball Web page that the owner went to for facts to settle the bet. It is not shown what race the person is the iPhone owner had the bet with.

Why are people always trying to turn things into a race issue?

  3. @Thomas: It is incredibly arrogant of people to talk about marketing when they know nothing about it. I know that pontificating on areas of ignorance is standard procedure on the internet, but that does not make it right. Marketing is an art and Apple has some of the best marketing in the world. I’m sorry you don’t like the tune, but it is identified with the iPhone and changing it would be a monumental mistake. Perhaps you should take the advice of Abe Lincoln who said: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

  4. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – is the fellow they look up on Wikipedia.

Anthony Williams – is the fellow that calls during the Wikipedia session. Very hard to tell from the video if he is of color.

All that being said, I’d be hard pressed to believe that Apple would allow what you are suggesting. That being said, if all the folks that ever appear in the iPhone ads are lilly white, that would piss some folks off too.

Once we head down the slippery slope, there is no easy way back.

  5. “Please get new music for iPhone Commercials.”

Repetition of thematic elements is a key strategy to establishing a product or brand identity and integral to successful marketing. Consumers tend to remember through simple repetition (even if you find it annoying like I do with Mentos commercials). You will find examples of this everywhere.

    To Falkirk: Well said.

  6. Brian-

How can you tell the race (or gender) of the caller? I see white fingers on the phone (thus, a white person) and a photo of Kareem Abdul Jabbar who is the basketball player who is the answer/subject of the bet.

  7. “Wasn’t there an article about the iPhone turning people into annoying “know-it-alls” a few days ago?”

And with a phone running Windows Mobile you can prove you know very little.
