“Apple, which in January is expected to take the wraps off its slimmest and sleekest notebook in years, is reported to have placed orders for a new breed of 13.3-inch LED backlight units with production-ready quantities scheduled for delivery this month,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.
“[DigiTimes] sources disclosed that Nano-Op’s LED notebook BLU shipments in November were only about 10,000 units, but Apple orders are expected drive up shipments to over 90,000 units in December,” the report claims,” Marsal reports. “Of interest, DigiTimes notes that the component shipments to both Dell and Apple are ‘for high-end models,’ reinforcing assumptions that the Mac maker’s upcoming streamlined notebook will fall somewhere between its existing 13-inch consumer MacBooks and its 15- and 17-inch professional MacBook Pro models.”
“Apple is expected to use a keynote presentation by chief executive Steve Jobs on January 15th to introduce its new 13.3-inch notebook,” Marsal reports.
Would suit me just fine!
Goody, me want!
Mutlitouch technology by any chance?
I hope it’s the ultra-glossy LED screen….
Magic Word: May (I “may” be joking.)
i heard they’re working on a “shiny” screen.
Will it compete with the Sony eBook reader (v2)? I’d really like some technology to work for me this time – instead of making things more complicated.
I guess this means no multitouch on the way…
I’m so sad…. :(((
Yeah, we really need a super slim notebook. Those MacBooks and MacBook Pros that they have now are so thick and heavy. I just carry my Mac Pro and monitor around with me all the time. It’s really about the same.
@ OZZ,
Indeed, no multitouch, let’s stop dreaming. Apple is missing the chance of creating a whole new category. Unless there’s one last thing…
Maybe the new LED screens are just for an updated macbook and they’re dropping the current models.
If nothing else, it means that MacBooks will get LED displays.
The one on my MacBook Pro is very nice, even with the matte finish… ;^)
A MacBook mini or micro with a docking station could be extremely cool. Yeah, sort of like of the old PowerBook Duo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerBook_Duo
Apple even patented a pressure sensitive trackpad a few years back. It would be nice to see THAT make it’s debut!
Nothing to make me regret buying my gorgeous little eee-PC.
I compared its weight to my iBook, and the Mac feels about ten times heavier, although in reality it isn’t.
Must be some kind of “threshold” weight above which things seem too heavy to be trivial.
Not sure what to dow ith my iBook now. It’s made its last train ride, poor thing.
This is exactly what I am waiting for to replace my 5 year old PowerBook G4 12″. I seriously thought about the MacBook several times, but the integrated video, non-LED backlit glossy screen, no backlit keyboard and no FW800 is a turn off, to name a few. The 15” is just too large for my needs.
Must. Resist. Buying. Another. Mac.
Do the LED backlit displays get washed out by sunlight when you take them outside? It happens to all LCD monitors but LEDs
are different, no?
Does anyone have any idea what the resolution on these 13.3-inch LED backlight screens may be?
Umm… 13.3″ is too big.
(that’s what SHE said!)
Seriously, I’d like to see a 10 or 11″ screen, or even smaller. My Macbook is fine, but my 12″ Powerbook is cuter.
To Daniel:
“Does anyone have any idea what the resolution on these 13.3-inch LED backlight screens may be?”
It might be similar to this in specs:

I hope the screen resolution (pixels per inch) is higher.
The more interesting rumor about this new MacBook is its use of flash for storage, or a combination of flash and hard drive. Imagine, a limited amount of flash (like 16GB or maybe 32GB) to store the OS and app files, and an 80GB or 160GB “iPod-size” hard drive for user data files. No built-in optical drive. I think that would an awesome.
Pat – she was just being kind and didn’t want to hurt you by pointing out centimeters aren’t the same as inches ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
Seriuosly though, assuming they do come out with 13 inch MBP, if that model is a success then smaller versions will be developed.
Now that Apple is increasing market share, it will be able to offer different models without worrying about carrying too many products. They have to sell enough to cover the initial manufacturing costs.
“Ultra-glossy” sounds good to me. He he!
Ultra glassy screens are fine by me too!!
As long as it is Museum Glass. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

The macbook is a good laptop, but it’s not an ultraportable. What this news probably means is that the regular macbooks will be getting LED backlighting.
My 12 inch G4 Powerbook is “ok” but becoming a little small for these 53 year old eyes. When I’m at home I put a 20 inch monitor on the side and it works fine!
I was into the Apple West Palm Beach store this week looking at the 15 inch, but it is a very large and heavy machine when compared with my current 12 inch.
I would have purchased the Macbook 13 inch and given my 12 inch PB to the wife EXCEPT…
1/ The glossy screen would drive me to drink even more than I do already already already. (Single malt makes me repeat my words words)
2/ The “integrated” video on the 13 inch sucks the big one. So sloooooow when compared with my old 12 inch G4! Even surfing the net is horrible.
IF the new 13 inch “macbook pro” or whatever it will be called has a/ a non-glossy screen and b/ a separate video card….
I’m sold!
