Verizon: Our new LG Voyager phone will kill Apple’s iPhone

Verizon Wireless unveiled a new cell phone today for the holiday season: a LG handset named “Voyager” that Verizon hopes “will compete with Apple Inc’s iPhone,” Sinead Carew reports for Reuters.

“Verizon Wireless hopes the new phone will attract customers put off by the iPhone’s lack of a traditional keypad — the Voyager hinges open to reveal a small computer keypad and a second screen,” Carew reports.

MacDailyNews Take: The only people “put off by iPhone’s lack of a traditional keypad” are people who haven’t used an iPhone.

Carew continues, “‘We think it’ll be the best phone … this year. It will kill the iPhone,’ Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Mike Lanman said in an interview.”

Carew reports, “Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart said the Voyager may attract existing Verizon subscribers who do not want to switch service providers, but he doubted it would hurt iPhone sales. ‘People who want a high-end media phone and want to stay with Verizon will certainly give that one a hard look. I don’t know that it would pull anybody away from an iPhone,’ he said.”

Verizon Wireless would not give exact pricing, but the “Voyager” is expected to retail for about $400 according to the report. Apple’s iPhone costs $399. Voyager will offer a 2-megapixel camera and a slot for 8GB of extra memory. “Voyager” also looks to be at least twice as thick as iPhone. Apple’s iPhone has a 2-megapixel camera and 8GB of built-in storage. Oh, yeah, unlike the “Voyager,” Apple’s thin iPhone also has a multi-touch UI, a real OS, and a real iPod with access to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. Voyager will launch “before the end of November,” Carew reports.

Yet another phone made to look externally somewhat like Apple’s iPhone. How stupid do they think people are? Verizon’s Chief Marketing Officer Mike Lanman is one seriously delusional bastage if he really believes that thing is “the best phone this year” and that “it will kill” Apple’s iPhone.

  1. Remember that show, the plane, the plane!!! I think LG is on Fantasy island if they think that brick will out sell the iPhone.
Traditional keyboard? Why? The touch keyboard on the iPhone works just fine.

  2. yea, the lg is uglier. the iphone looks so awesome I wish it was on verizon, but at&t;or cingular or whatever they are now a days has the worst network in my area so I couldn’t justify the switch. No that this phone is coming out I am happy I stayed

  3. To: Camel’s Milk Drinker… I need for you to do some real research before u run your mouth. Have you seen the mobile tv work. its not EVDO its MEDIA FLO. It works at 30fps, your just repeating something you heard from someone. Until you tested it dont comment, because it really makes you look dumb. The quality is digital, no buffering no hiccups smooth tv just like your tv at home. Removable memory show the ability to grow, your iphone will always have 8gb no matter what you do to it. This phone can grow with technology. That was the most ignorent post i ever seen, shows how simple mind people are. Use facts to support your argument. Maybe that milk spoiled on your stomach and have you thinking backwards.

  4. I forgot that i was on a Apple website. Thats great, at least we can keep all the narrow mind people together. Sheeps, followers, people that cant think outside the box people that buy into hype. Steve say jump they jump and run. But Im out….peace lol

  5. Voyager = iBrick.

More expensive, less features, and more than twice as
thick? No thanks. I was hoping the Voyager would leave OFF
the keyboard… and be 1/2 as thick as the iPhone.

The people at Verizon… are WAY ‘out of touch’ with what
    the public wants and needs.

    Sad.

  6. apple made a big boo boo on the ibrick,
right or wrong it is a serious fiasco,
    and AT&Tm;another bad move,

and no third party software, no free wifi?

    greedy greedy greedy

yes the stock is up and the money is rolling in,
but i am so put off after converting so many to the MAC

it is not the company i love, i’ll wait until the phone thing
gets resolved, probably take a lawsuit to do it

  7. If you have to say your product will “kill” (or otherwise best) another specific product, doesn’t that mean your product is already second best, or at least playing catch-up? I think it’s much classier to simply say something like “I think this is the best phone to come out this year, and I think other people will see that too when they get their hands on it.” Just leave the iPhone out of it.

That’s the primary reason why I don’t like Apple poking at MS all the time, because many other companies do it primarily to say, “Yeah it’s not really as good, but we’re saying it is.”

And you can go back to the site where all the people that don’t use punctuation, don’t know the plural of sheep, and don’t know what a sentence fragment is.

  9. And how does Mr. Mike Lanman define the word “kill?

And does this mean that if Mr. Lanman’s bold prediction proves untrue, will he kill himself?

Gosh, inquiring minds want to know which version of Seppuku that Mr. Lanman will use!

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

The interesting part of all of this is that Apple is very much in the driver’s seat for an Intellectual Property (IP) and Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) lawsuit against Verizon.

YMMV, but I think that they should very much go look into a possible injunction to handle this glaringly obvious “look and feel” design rip-off.

If nothing else, Apple should mention it in the press that they’re looking into NDA and IP breaches, so as to put Verizon on the defense. Naturally, this shouldn’t be said now, but conveniently mentioned…say 2-3 days before the actual roll-out of the Voyager.

    -hh

  10. Verizon Wireless would not give exact pricing, but the “Voyager” is expected to retail for about $400 according to the report. Apple’s iPhone costs $399.

wow what a difference. apple sucks

  11. You people are retarded… yes the iPhone looks cool, and yes it is fun for a while but it is hell to send text messages on I mean WTF there is no real keypad how the fuck am i suppose to type a message to my wife with no keypad its terrible… and the the internet, when you are not on WiFi is so slow its worthless, so i returned my iphone, and yes i pissed the some of the features when i went back to verizon and back to my vx6700 (ppc 6700) but i had a real keypad so it was better than the iphone, now that this new phone is coming out, im going to try it, i know its not going to kill the iphone but its on verizon and it had a key pad so its better for me

  12. LOL @ iFags.

    -Removable memory
    -Removable battery
-Keyboard that is big enough to type fast on
    -Mobile TV
-EV-DO so you can actually load web pages
-Should be able to tether and use as a modem
-Apple copied quite a bit off the KE850 (prada)
-Apple offered Verizon their phone first
-LG is much more successful as a phone manufacturer
-Verizon’s network has been the most reliable 7 years in a row (JD Power)
    -It will be insurable!
    -It won’t cost $600 w/ 8gb of memory when it’s released!

I think it’s clear to see which device has more pros.

  13. I love some areas of Apple (Ipod/Macbook) – but the iPhone is completely over-hyped for what it is. Why do iPhone owners believe that their phone is the first of its kind?? The LG Prada is actually the same thing as the Voyager, but much smaller and has been out for over a year. America is laughed at throughout the world when it comes to cell phone technology. The iPhone was outdated before it came out, and the Voyager isn’t much better, but don’t tell me LG is copying Apple. Apple is notorious for stealing/buying ideas.

  14. Whatever, there no cellphone Company that can beat Verizon, also you all try do thethering with the Slowly Iphone and THE NEW LG VX 1000….Iphone= Dial-up Voyager= DSL/High Speed/Broadband….Also we could be able to add insurence and replaced the battery…and the best of the best, you could go to any Verizon store and get support for your phone because they do have techs..LG Is a very reliable company and i think this one would be a great phone..ahhhhh and just to let you guys know Verizon rejected the Slowly Iphone, they rather to have the best network we great ,reliable phone….

  15. I made the mistake of buring an LG cellphone after owning first a Nokia then a Sony. LG makes the most complicated cellphone I’ve ever used.

My son messed with the “custom ringer” settings, and it took me so long to find out how he did it, I gave up. A month later I found it hidden several layers deep in an obscure unrelated section of the phone, having nothing to do with ringers.

    LG stands for “Least Good.”

Was this a Verizon phone? Verizon puts their own UI in their phones, and if you can’t understand it, then honestly you shouldn’t even be chatting about cell phones with other enthusiasts.

So you had one small issue with the menu on one phone, and LG as a company makes the “Least Good” phones? Give me a break.

  17. i totally agree with this comment theres nothing else to say…if someone has something to say go ahead but i know nothing could beat this..

i have an LG 9800, the V. It was a decent phone when it came out, but it’s time to upgrade. the EnV has been out for quite a while sooooo it’s old tech, right? anyone happy with this style would want to look at the next model which is…..THE VOYAGER!!! why wouldn’t i want it? the fact that works like an iphone is only an added bonus. can i get an AMEN?
