  1. Sucks to be the guy in the first row with a Dell. He must be so embarrassed that his parents didn’t buy him a Mac.

When I was in school, I was the only one in the lecture hall with a Mac (iBook) — and the only one with a laptop in the lecture.

Boy, a lot has changed in six years.

  2. The picture is obviously a fake. You see MAC lemmings, there’s a little program available for lucky Windows users called Photoshop which can do some pretty fantastic things with images. Clearly someone performed a little magic on their PC as a joke on you MAC dorks. I almost feel bad for you.

Maybe Adobe will port Photoshop over to the MAC if Apple’s market share cracks 4%, which should happen… never. Losers.

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  3. Buy AAPL now!

(MW: future. Just ironic. These kids are our future.)

Just think, a good percentage of these kids will get into some major decision making role for their own company or another’s and start the adoption of Macs company-wide because of their success and joy using Macs throughout college.

Heck, that’s why my company uses Macs, the owner had a great experience using them in college.

  4. Oh, this is just beautiful:

“Q. What brand or model should I buy?
    A. The faculty has designated Apple Computer as its preferred provider for two primary reasons: (1) Apple’s OS X operating system is based on Unix, which makes these computers far less susceptible to viruses than other computers. Viruses are a serious problem on university campuses. (2) Apple iBook and PowerBook computers come bundled with iLife, a suite of applications ideal for learning the basics of photo editing, and audio and video editing. We’ll use those programs in several classes. Incoming students will receive information on recommended models and pricing in February of each year.

    Q. What if I prefer a Windows-based machine?
    A. That’s an option, but it’s one we do not recommend unless you plan to make a career of computer-assisted reporting. By the time you purchase photo, audio and video software for a PC, you probably will have spent more than you would if buying a comparable Apple Computer. Buy a PC if you prefer to do so, but make sure it is wireless and has Microsoft Office. Almost 100 percent of last year’s freshmen chose Apple computers. “

  5. Actually, as a alumni of a Journalism School (Drake University, woot!), Macs are the norm there. If this were an acturial science class…. That’d be something, but as a J-school, it’s nice, but certainly not expected.

However, that’s a lotta new hardware there, so go AAPL, go!

  6. For the last time…

(not really, there will always be idiots out there)

ZUNE TANG IS HUMOROUS. HE WRITES EXAGGERATED STATEMENTS. HE WRITES LUDICROUS STATMENTS TO BE FUNNY. IF YOU DON’T GET IT, YOU ARE ONLY PROVING YOURSELF TO BE A MORON.

Keep in mind that I only use “he” in the formal sense here, for all I know, it could be C1 or something. I dunno.

  7. WOW!!!
    I LIKE IT!

i don’t recall seeing a single laptop in my lecture classes when i was in school… and that wasn’t that long ago. of course i wasn’t in journalism, but still. we were all to broke for laptops, lol… we kept it old skool with pen and paper, lol. even after i got into my graphic design classes i still didn’t see many laptops… but you better believe the ones i saw were apple!

  8. Are there any other campuses which designate Apple as their _preferred_ platform? This is an encouraging trend, if so, as well as being not shortsighted. The other problem, of course, is their requirement for Office- these days, there are alternatives, which should also be encouraged.

MDW word- ‘corner’ – as in turning the….

  9. It’s pointless to point that out to most people on these boards. I’ve tried several times in the past to elucidate the same point…. but got plenty of flame from the ignorant here.

Just let them keep flaunting their inability to recognize the humor and wit in the real ZT’s posts (there are several ZT wannabe’s, as is painfully obvious from their lack of wit and humor) while we chuckle at their flaunting.

  10. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Busting . . . .

Even the most successful comedians change their acts after a certain point, for crying out loud. PuneTang has SO outlived his entertainment value it’s pathetic. But then again, an old dog is the last to smell his own farts.

  11. Basty,

I’m a photojournalist and I’m unaware of any software for journalists that is only available on Mac. If anything, the newsrooms of the 90’s went through a terrible spell of custom-written windoze-only software for entire newsrooms which I’m sure they’re regretting now.

nopw that’s pure preference in that photo. and it doesn’t look like Photoshop to me, though I can’t explain the red Macbooks.

  12. The red macbooks have the Speck cases on them. I’ve seen quite a few student aged folk at coffee shops with them. Apparently the Speck hard cases are popular with them (I personally don’t get it).

  13. University of Missoui School of Journalism highly recommends (i.e. nearly requires) students to get a mac. The picture is no different than if you dropped in on one of the hundreds of classrooms in America where the school system bought Macs for the kids.

That being said.. almost all my friends buy Macs now.

  14. Well never see that recommendation out of our tech department. Billy Gates payed us too much for a whole building here. Gotta keep those donors in dollars so they keep donating those dollars.

But the Mac share is gaining on it’s own power without their help.

  15. an amazing amount of my Windows suffering friends are now switching or have already switched to Mac… all of them seem so incredibly relieved. as if they have finally escaped an incredibly embarrasing siituation ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
I wouldn’t be surprised to see this in ‘real’ life… but I must say it does look a lot like a Photoshop composition.

  16. Sigh! I remember taking my B-School quant final at HBS, where all the students had IBM Thinkpads back in 1991. Of course, I was over at the Public Policy school, and lugged my Mac SE, across the river, to take the exam. I actually had to write my own Black-Scholes option pricing model in Excel, since the application handed out was PC-only! Kids have it easy today!

  17. Why I’m Not Worried!!!!!
    http://fakesteveballmer.blogspot.com
My worst nightmare averted! Jobs says No to OSX running on non-Apple PCs! WHEW!

I admit it, for a while there I was scared that Jobs was going to announce that their next candy-coated OSX (Leotard) would run on any PC hardware! My fears were abated when I heard him say this:

“Our goal is to make the best personal computers in the world and make products we are proud to sell and recommend to our family and friends. …. But there’s some stuff in our industry that we wouldn’t be proud to ship. And we just can’t do it. We can’t ship junk,…. There are thresholds we can’t cross because of who we are. And we think that there’s a very significant slice of the [market] that wants that too. … We don’t offer stripped-down, lousy products.”

THANK GOODNESS he still has a bad attitude like that and it sounds like he will never change! I hope he stays CEO of Apple forever.

  18. Yeah, as an actual journalism student at Mizzou, I can confirm that this photo is most likely real – I see and experience this on a daily basis, we really are all on Macs. Gets pretty ridiculous at times. It’s the science/business classes that lean more towards PCs.

  19. This is a pretty atypical situation. The class almost never looks like this. Most of us still use our notebooks. Actual notebooks.

Our professor asked us one day to bring our computers to class so a picture could be taken of everyone with their Mac computers, which is almost the official computer of the School. And yeah, I’d hate to be the guy with the Dell.

I’m in the second row, the one with the glasses by the way.

  20. ZUNE TANG IS NOT<b>HUMOROUS. HE WRITES <b>THE SAME BULLS**T OVER AND OVER. HE WRITES LUDICROUS STATMENTS TO BE FUNNY, BUT ONLY SUCCEEDS IN BEING A TROLL. IF YOU DON’T GET IT, YOU ARE ONLY PROVING YOURSELF TO BE A MORON.

  21. from Zune Tang:
“The picture is obviously a fake. You see MAC lemmings, there’s a little program available for lucky Windows users called Photoshop which can do some pretty fantastic things with images.”

Zune Tang is right. In addition to the ‘red-eye reduction’ filter, the Clone Retouching tool in Photoshop for Windoze automatically clones out PC laptops from your photos, replacing them with far more photogenic MacBook Pros.

  22. It’s not a fake! The Missouri School of Journalism really pushes its students to get Macs. The whole university is really Mac-based, and only a certain few departments encourage their students to use PCs. The classroom setting above isn’t the norm. Sure there are kids with their Macs, but there isn’t any one time like this where, unless staged as this was, you can find everyone on their Macbooks as in this picture.

It was just a prompt. The professor asked us to do it for a photo op.

  23. This is an introductory course at the Missouri School of Journalism. For freshman. The School nearly requires Macs, or at least pushes them. Check journalism.missouri.edu and look for computer requirements. They basically downplay the PC as much as possible.

You guys are really embarrasing yourselves when you claim this was photoshopped or a fake. I was there. Five hundred kids were there. This isn’t how it always is… the prof just wanted everyone to take a picture like this.

  24. It’s a fake. Unless:

    a. All Apple laptops have highly reflective logos. Many are too bright for the lighting.

    b. Apple makes green and red MacBooks.

Nice try, whoever did this. Anyway here’s to the day Apple does see that kind of market share. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  25. anyone who owns a mac will know that the logo becomes lit once the computer is turned on.

and apple DOES see that kind of market share when a department or school mandates (practically) the use of a certain computer. it’s a real classroom, with real students, using the computers the missouri school of journalism prefers their students to use. and when i say “prefers,” i mean they might as well make it mandatory because they make their preference KNOWN.

you guys are making yourselves look stupid! i’m in this class.

  26. FIRST OF ALL, TO THE THE PEOPLE THAT THINK THIS PICTURE IS PHOTOSHOPPED, THINK AGAIN. I KNOW QUITE A FEW PEOPLE IN THIS PHOTO, SO THIS IS NOT FAKE….

FYI THIS IS A JOURNALISM 1010 CLASS, FOR THOSE WHO THINK DIFFERENT…

Sorry for the CAPS, but I get furious at things like this.

  27. Rigged. Journalism has always been somewhat Mac Centric because they aren’t technical. Macs have always done layouts and fonts better than Windows with less work. It’s not representative. It’s how to lie with pictures (subset of how to lie with statistics.

  28. Look at all those mac drone idiots. Spent all that money for a paperweight when you can get a Alienware or any other laptop for about half the price with a bigger screen and way more power.
