“Commenters on my Enterprise Mac blog have been begging for an update to my column “Mac sense and nonsense,” in which I chronicled the early experiences of a friend who agreed to switch from Windows — her OS for her entire computer-using life — to the Mac,” Tom Yager reports for InfoWorld.
“My friend loves OS X; she’s sold. Wild horses driven by a grinning Steve Ballmer carrying $100,000 couldn’t drag her back into Windows. That hundred large might have convinced her under Tiger (OS X 10.4), but I’ve shared with her many of the published details of Leopard (10.5), due in October,” Yager reports.
“She knows that I’m an Apple Developer Connection Premiere member and that I have Leopard, and she thinks I’m a jerk for not letting her use it,” Yager reports.
“She no longer has a fondness for Windows, and I have learned that if I wish to acquaint myself with the great beyond, all I need to do is mention October one more time,” Yager reports.

Been a lifer on the Mac…and very happy too. I have to work on Win sometimes and it’s terrible.
I’ve been using apple computers since 1979, the Mac since 1984 and I won’t have or use anything else.
Use ’em both at work everyday. Mac is where I spend my own money, though.

It’s funny. Those windows geeks out there have this “bias” when it comes to windows and Macs. Us Mac geeks in here have favor the Mac and mock their windows. The ironic thing about it is though that we actually HAVE USED both machines and deem the Mac….well, the winner….with no runner up. The windows boys that come up with all of the gibberish about Macs and their problems…yeah, they haven’t spent a couple hours with the OS and deemed windows the winner, they’re just stuck in their box and form their opinions based on ideas, not application.
Prior to ’84 I had used and worked with every this-DOS and that-DOS that ever was (even spent 2 months in RSX-11 schools – anyone know what that is?) When the 1st Mac came out I got mine in January ’84, one of the 1st ever sold at Computer Tree (Apple retailer). Now, about 10 Macs later, I wonder how disgusted with computers I would be if there were no such thing as a Mac. I’d probably be in another line of work by now. I don’t see how Windows IT people can stand it for very long.
I started with a Apple IIc in 1985, my father had a Macintosh 512K, I switched to Amiga 500, then I had my first PC around 1993: a 386 SX33 with windows 3.1, I upgraded over the years, always a PC. Sometimes I built it myself. My sister bought an iMac around 2000 because it was good-looking. I liked it but did not think of switching. I started to change my mind when I saw her Powerbook in 2004, MacOSX 10.3 looked like an OS from the future in comparison to XP, and I was convinced when I heard of Parallels.
I’ve been a happy iMac user since January and I am never going back. And I almost never use Parallels (Bootcamp only for video games – once in a month maybe).

started with 9.1 and X.0 after replacing my SUSE Linux box with a G4 450 and ibook(blue clam shell). At he time it was IRIX at work and compaq TRU64.
the mac OS X experience had come such a long way. It’s great. Used an Ipod touch for the first time yesterday….. i was extremely impressed…. can’t wait for a feature rich version to be released
i was a Win95 early adopter as well.. in those days i hadn’t heard of macs.
Now I’m still using panther on a power book g4 and Remote desktop to XP for a living developing a unix app wrapped up to run on windows….. f*cked up or what!
I’ll buy a new mac book after Leopard has been proven to be stable.

I have used Macs and Apple exclusively since the late 80’s when I was in elementary school. However, I’d take Ballmers $100,000 and use a PC for the rest of my life. Of course my iPod, iPhone and AppleTV would still get heavy use.
I switched in 1992 as well – from a RatShack Color Computer 3!
Switched in 2004 with the iMac G5; switched the family with the Mac Mini – never looked back
Considering I can rack up $100,000 in about 14 months without Ballmer’s help, I’ll stick with the Mac and save myself $100,000 worth of therapy.
I’d take the money and then change my mind….

Mac Plus was my first computer. Been Mac ever since.
Ahh, the Tandy Color Computer 3 – first true multitasking microcomputer. It ran “OS-9” from Microware Systems. Had a windowing environment, GUI, modular software design – all kinds of neat things. All run by the MC6809E processor. Good times all around. I think you can even run it with MESS.
I bought my first computer in September 2000 at age 28 – my Cube. I never owned a computer before that because they never worked right. BUT, I was always using Winblows and didn’t understand the difference between Winblows PC’s and a Mac until my friend Art let me try out his G3. I’ve been an addict ever since!

I’ve been a Mac user since around 1995 when I was forced to use one at work. In a public school system. I started there in 94 but by sometime in 95 I became a Mac fan. I think it had something to do with being a phone support guy. Teachers would call in and my first question would be, “Are you on a Mac or a Windows computer?” Before long I realized that if they said, “Windows” my spirit would sink. I’d spend an average of 45min on the phone with them (often over an hour) and not always fix their problem. On the Mac, it was less than 15min nearly every time and rarely was there a remaining problem when I hung up the phone. I’ve gotten rid of all Windows computers at home and use Mac exclusively. The irony is that now the school system is mostly Windows and Macs are shunned. But I argue and complain and persevere until they let me buy a Mac. I’ll never go back.
I became a real mac user (switched) in November of 2006. Before that I used a Hacintosh to test out OS X on my HP system….then immediately was amazed at how intuitive, easy to use, advanced, and slick OS X truly is. All it took was a month to convince me (I was a windows user all my life until then) 1 month later…on November 2006, I got my Macbook, and now I have the new Macbook Pro.
There is no way in hell I’m going back to Winblows after experiencing OS X and the slickness of a Mac. I am happy to say I’ve managed to convince a few of my friends as well into liking OS X and a Mac in general, as they were once sworn mac haters.

Must have been sweet to own a Cube as your first computer. I have one. LOVE IT! Produced a 140+ page color monthly magazine on it for 14 issues. A real workhorse. And so elegant.

I did consumer phone support for Apple back in the OS 8-9 days. I can relate to those 15min calls.
Switched to Mac in 1984, switched to NeXT in 1989, and have stayed on the NeXTSTEP/OS X track ever since.
If I’d ever had to use WIndows for any length of time, I probably would have gotten an ulcer.

i had dabbled with macs since 2000 (i know, i’m late to the party!) but finally switched in 2003 with an original g3 imac. haven’t looked back, although i do keep a windows box around for the few games i can’t play on the mac (that is, til i get a macbook pro!) =)

I’ve never really had a Windoze PC. I went from Texas Instruments 99/4a to C64 to Amiga 500 to Amiga 1200 to Amiga 4000 to G3 to G4 to G5 to MacPro.
I switched, from 8-bit CPM, in 1985.

Yes I know what that is. RSX-11M and RSX-11M Plus were the os’s used on DEC’s PDP11 systems. I have worked with these systems before switching to VAX/VMS. I also worked with DEC’s DECNET. All that before the PC era.
Started with an all-in-one 9″ B&W;screen Mac Classic and System 6.7 (I think) in 1993. From then…..PowerMac 6100, then a G3, Powerbook 3400, two “lampshade” iMacs (one at home, one in my office), now on a G4 Powerbook, getting ready to get the family a brand spanking new 24″ iMac (and daydreaming about an MBP!) I use the Dull Windopes box here at school when I HAVE to, but it only serves to make me appreciate my Macs all the more.
Some of you think $100,000 is a lot of money. I say add to zeros and then will talk.
Yep, been a mac user since 1999 with my first computer being an iMac 333, still running OS 8.5.1, my daughter uses it for games and learning to type.
Next came mr iMac 400 DV SE. Running Tiger 10.4.10 with a gig of ram. My son use that one every day for school.
Got my wife a G4 iBook.
Then there’s my beloved 17″ G4 PowerBook, which I regretfully sold.
But I am pretty satisfied with my 17″ MacBook Pro.
I use windows crap at work(u.s. gov, always upgrading….) and what a hunk of junk those things are. never ever never will i ever own a pc running windows never ever ever.
I say never give large amounts of cash to people who can’t spell. It only leads to Britneyism.

Switched to mac when OSX came out and never looked back. I still have no desire to work with or on Windows. Just too many problems for me now, not to mention the lack of trust in the operating system.
