CBS: ‘We like our relationship with Apple’s iTunes Store’

Apple iTunes“CBS Corp. is happy with its deal with iTunes and won’t join a battle against Apple Inc. over the pricing of television shows on the online store, CBS Chief Executive Les Moonves said on Tuesday,” Robert MacMillan reports for Reuters.

“‘We’re sort of staying out of the battle,’ Moonves told a Merrill Lynch investor conference. ‘We like our relationship with iTunes.’ Moonves said iTunes is not a significant source of revenue. ‘We look at iTunes as much as a promotional vehicle for our shows as a financial vehicle,’ he said,” MacMillan reports.

“NBC and News Corp plan to debut an advertising online-video joint venture called Hulu in October. Moonves said that CBS was invited to be a third partner, but declined,” MacMillan reports.

Moonves is smart man (if you overlook that little Katie Couric anchoring the Evening News debacle) leaving the NBC bonehead brigade to tilt at windmills by their lonesome.

    “I’m not talking, Dr. Evil”

“Oh darn, three times. CBS said they like iTunes and you can shove Hulu up your ass”

Sounds like a smart man, indeed.

  3. Do know NBC, General Electric and Universal/Vivendi are all the same ‘company’. And since Universal’s Music Group is all pissy-hissy toward Apple and iTunes, we can safely assume the ‘brains behind the operation’ are ultimately at G.E. and were also the ones who decided to pull the plug on the TV portion of iTunes. And when you consider their brown-nosing with Gates/Microsoft via MSNBC — well, appears they’re all peas in the same lame pod.

Now, also know CBS and Viacom were/are connected some way, but haven’t checked the roster/program in a while … so, after a quick trip – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBS_Corporation – found this interesting tidbit:

“The Viacom-CBS split was structured in such a way that the existing company (Viacom) changed its name to CBS Corporation, while the new Viacom is actually a newly founded spin-off company. For this reason, the newly rechristened CBS Corporation is actually the same company (Viacom) that was founded in 1986. The 1986 Viacom, in turn, was the successor to a previous company also known as Viacom and founded in 1971.”

Ok, if you can figure out THAT glorified 3-card monte scheme … well, grasshopper, you’re ready for the next stage of advanced Wall-Street smoke and mirrors.

So, reckon we’ll have to take it at face value that Moonves IS some kind of genius.

Do know he doesn’t take himself too serious – from his appearances on Letterman. Which we could describe as: The really smart ones know when to play dumb.

    AND, also know this – his wife is One Fabulous Babe ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

But, finally, do have to agree with you MDN – the ‘Katie Decision’ may be the one, in the end, where he’ll lose all his attaboys.

  4. You are wrong. Even though there have been many mergers and split-offs the present situation is as follows:

    GE (Independent)
    CBS Corp. (Independent)
    Viacom (Independent)
    Vivendi (Independent)
Universal Music Group- Subsidiary of Vivendi (100%)
NBC Universal – Subsidiary of GE (80%) and Vivendi (20%)

    mdn- changes

  5. If you’ve ever been on either side of negotiating with GE, thats buying or selling, you know it’s not surprising at all the state of the relationship with Apple. Deals don’t get done with GE unless they get like 90% of the benefit of the deal.

  6. To – @BC

    According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC_Universal

“NBC Universal is a media and entertainment company formed in May 2004 by the combination of General Electric’s NBC with Vivendi Universal Entertainment, part of the French Media Group, Vivendi SA. GE owns 80% of NBC Universal with the remaining 20% owned by Vivendi SA.”

I don’t know much about all this, and not sure how you’re defining ‘independent’, but will betcha if someone owns 80% of your ass it’s fairly safe to assume the other 20% is gonna go along with the program.

    Thanks, BC
