Dell looks to virtualization to make their PCs a little less OS-limited; won’t speculate on Mac OS X

“Dell is developing consumer PCs that can run multiple versions of Microsoft’s Windows and Linux software at the same time, [according to] the personal computer maker’s chief technology officer, Kevin Kettler,” Reuters reports.

“Users of the new Dell PCs would be able to simultaneously run multiple, software-generated computers on one machine, using an increasingly popular technology known as virtualization that allows greater flexibility and computing security,” Reuters reports.

“One virtual machine might run Windows Vista and handle every day computing tasks, while another could be used only to browse the internet, limiting any security threats to the parameters of the virtual machine – which could be deleted,” Reuters reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Or you could get a Mac which has as OS that – shocker! – can do everything and still surf the Internet unimpeded. What a crystal clear indictment of Windows’ shoddiness by Reuters and Dell!

“A third virtual machine might run a version of Linux that is compatible with programs on the user’s work computer. And a fourth virtual machine might run Windows XP software that is not compatible with the Windows Vista machine,” Reuters reports. “Such PCs could go on sale as early as next year, Kettler said in an interview by telephone while attending the LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco.”

Reuters reports., “He declined to say whether the machines will be able to run Apple Inc’s OS X software designed for its Macintosh computers, whose sales are growing faster than the overall PC market. ‘I can’t speculate on that,’ Kettler said. ‘Virtualization is very powerful. It’s an environment that would allow many different operating systems to co-exist. You can interpret that however you would like.'”

MacDailyNews Take: He won’t speculate, but all signs so far point to it never happening. Apple’s Mac OS X Software License Agreement currently states: “This License allows you to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time.”

Only Apple’s OS-unlimited Macs can run virtually all the world’s software. In other words, Apple Macs run the world’s largest software library. Period. Beleaguered Dell can dream, but, as things stand, all other PCs from all other PC box assemblers are OS-limited and cannot run Mac OS X, iLife ’08 (iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand), iWork ’08 (Pages, Keynote, Numbers), Final Cut, Logic, and thousands of other Mac-only apps and plug-ins.

  1. Dell puts together the parts that other countries build, because the US decided a while back that it didn’t want low-paying blue-collar jobs. I’m not against Dell for the fact that they provide jobs and assemble computers. I’m against Dell because their products are Windows-centric junk.

What we should do is simply reduce the cost of American labor to American business by making Social Security and Medicaid optional. Until we do that, all we’ll have are assemblers.

  2. It’s OSX that is “Machine Limited” .. Apple has to ADD a chip to all of their machines so OSX will find it and know it’s a “real” Mac, otherwise, it would run on “Any” PC… (And if you use OSX 86, it will run on any PC)..

    As you do, correct?

    Shoeman from July 23:

“As far as building a PC today, I did about 7 months ago and it runs OSX-86 just fine.”

Probably a bad idea to be bragging about it, Shoebuddy.

  3. Actually, I’ve heard that you CAN install Mac OS X now on non-Macintosh hardware using X86. There is even some kind of Wikipedia type web site on the Internet that explains the step by step procedures how to do this.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86

Now, how well X86 works with applications and how well this works on AMD processors might be another story, but more and more people are talking about this. I’m glad that MDN has finally started talking about this as this has been talked about inside various PC magazines and Wired.

I can’t really fault Dell for looking at alternative OSs on their hardware, or being capable of installing whatever OS that you want on their equipment. After-all Apple did somewhat the same thing with Mac OS X, using a Unix kernel. I see this as being a good idea for Dell and other PC manufacturers.

  4. As you do, correct?

Well, Yes as a matter of fact, I do…

I also have 5 other real Macs in my house…

The problem with the Fanboyism is that you guys BLINDLY accept everything SJ says and you repeat his little talking points.. Trust me Kids, I’m not a “tinkerer” and I understand what is inside a PC (or Mac) very well…

It’s the same EXACT components in a PC as in a Mac, except Apple generally uses slightly outdated stuff (I like the “Combo drive” in the Mini’s – hahahahahahahahaha Do you fanboys know that the rest of the world uses what you call “SUPERDRIVES” as standard equipment (and have for sometime now)… And I can’t tell ya how great your New “iMac” is with it’s $50 “non upgradeable” video card is with 1 whole Gig of Ram for “ONLY” $1800!!!! What a deal…

Yet you fanboys just except and repeat all of Steve little catch phrases .. “Apple doesn’t sell generic Junky componets”,,, Trust me, they do!

Of course, you guys really don’t know “what’s inside them there boxes” now do ya.. Steve says it’s “really gorgeous” and that’s enough for you..

Trust me, I’m a bigger Mac Fan that most of you. But that doesn’t blind me from the fact that Apple’s Hardware is nothing special, and trust me, it’s no better than those “Junky Dells”… In most cases, it’s what Dell was selling 6 months ago just in a prettier case…

  5. Get over yourself. “I understand computers better than God”. I’m guessing that you are in your mid-40’s, divorced, and live with your parents. In fact, they probably paid for the 5 macs you have in “your” house.

Speaking as someone that has extensive experience with macs and dells, I will take a mac any day. I have had many more hardware problems with PC’s that I’ve owned than any of the macs I’ve owned. Apple takes time to perfect their computers and Dell just releases any piece of junk they can. It’s the same reason Sega went under and Nintendo is still here. In the end, innovation, creativity, and pursuit of perfection win over speed of production.

  6. No, you’re NOT a Mac fan – you’re an OS X / OSX 86 fan. You love the OS, hate the computers. You complain ad nauseum about the hardware, while you’re willing to break the law to use OS X.

And you still never answered the question of July 23 about what you do with your computer that requires the latest components, and that can’t be accomplished otherwise – besides bragging rights.

Components: so what, when they’re FAR MORE CAPABLE than 99%+ of users require? Further, Wingsy’s observation is quite interesting and deserves an answer from your great brain.

As far as your ranting about “fanboyism” here goes: first off, there’s very little of it in this thread. Second, if it bugs you so much, WHY COME? Couldn’t be that you like being an irritant, is it? Nah….

Trust me, I’m a bigger Mac Fan that most of you.

I think you’re a bigger everything than most of us. Your willingness to break the EULA / law to use OS X pretty much invalidates your opinion.

  7. @Shoeman
“Trust me, I’m a bigger Mac Fan that most of you”.

I do not understand the logic. If you are a bigger fan then us and we are alld fanboi’s, then what does that make you?

Think before you write your comments which are geared to be insulting to most of us here. State facts please and answer the questions, if you can.

  8. No, you’re NOT a Mac fan – you’re an OS X / OSX 86 fan.

I stand Corrected. I am indeed a large fan of the OS. It does blow Windows, Linux, or other flavors of UNIX out of the water…

And you still never answered the question of July 23 about what you do with your computer that requires the latest components, and that can’t be accomplished otherwise – besides bragging rights.

Because I don’t NEED to explain my choice in hardware to you, Steve Jobs, or anyone else. I want the fastest hardware I can find, with the fastest GPU. I want to ability to upgrade the machine with the most modern components when they become available. I’ve done this with personal computers since 1979.

Frankly Sir, What I buy with my hard earned money is absolutely none of your business and I have no need to justify my purchases to you. Just as what type car I drive, what guitar I play, and the size and style of my house are none of your business…

Components: so what, when they’re FAR MORE CAPABLE than 99%+ of users require? Further, Wingsy’s observation is quite interesting and deserves an answer from your great brain.

Well, You’re obviously a moonbat democrat. People like you think you have the right to tell me what to buy and not what to buy… I purchase what I want because it’s what I want and I can afford it…

Oh, BTW Moonbat, I just bought my wife a new SUV

I think you’re a bigger everything than most of us. Your willingness to break the EULA / law to use OS X pretty much invalidates your opinion.

Fair enough. I run OSX 86 on one of my PC’s. That obviously means I’m stupid. Maybe someday, I’ll be smart like you so that I can make real intelligent fanboy statements like:

“Wooo Hooo, Yeaaa OSX is now Unix CERTIFED, Wooo Hooo. Btw, what does that mean”….

    I also like…

“Wooo Hooo, It’s got a HD 2400 XT , Yeahhhh, Wooo Hooo. I’m going to buy 2 of them!!! BTW, what exactly is a HD 2400 XT”

    =-=-=-=-=-=

So Mr. Bigmouth, have a good day. I’m going back to work (I imagine as a Liberal who is interested in how I spend MY money, employment isn’t real high on your list of things to do).. Have a nice day and if ya ever get a job, go out like a REAL Fanboy and buy a couple of $1800 iMacs. They only have a gig of ram, they got a smaller HDD than any comparable PC, and they have a $50 video card in them, BUT, as any fanboy will tell ya, “They’re really gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

  9. Shoeman: “Do you fanboys know that the rest of the world uses what you call “SUPERDRIVES” as standard equipment (and have for sometime now)… “

What an ignoramus. How long have Superdrives been available in Macs – the late 90s? And didn’t the term ORIGINATE with the DVD burners in the PowerBook notebook and PowerMac desktop?

from Wikipedia: “The term is not widely used outside the Macintosh community, though within the Mac community the term has become somewhat genericized to refer to any DVD burner, not just the factory-standard Pioneer models.”

hahahahahahahaha = the sound of Shoeman being taken away…

  10. I get it now: you’re overcompensating… explains EVERYTHING.

Nobody told you what you need to buy, nor do I care how you spend your cash (neither do you, apparently), but YOU felt the need to tell everybody how much more informed you think you are, and yet cannot justify your pronouncements. And Grigori’s dead right about your Superdrive comment. And as a moderate conservative, I find you a bit of an embarrassment.

Like I said, bragging rights, no more, no less. Oh well, BACK TO WORK – I’ve got some contracts to deal with.

  11. and Shoeman….one last thing.

Anyone who starts a sentence like…”you libs..or you rightwingers…etc always always turns people off. Last time I looked, people on both sides of the political spectrum have jobs and are interested in employment.

  12. Let’s stop the arguing. No one ever said that EVERY mac has the latest and greatest hardware. Neither does EVERY Dell. The top end macs (macbook pro/mac pro) have great hardware. Other macs have good hardware, but better hardware does exist (shocker). And I don’t think we even need to mention what you can buy at dell.com for $200 or so. So, Shoeman, if you want to start a computer company that only sells computers with 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD, and insane graphics cards, then more power to you.

As a wise man once told me: “We all have big jimmys. There’s nothing to prove”. So, let’s stop arguing.
