Bush administration refuses to veto Qualcomm ban, Broadcom wins

&”W decided not to ride to the Qualcomm’s rescue. The Bush administration has chosen to uphold an import ban on cell phones containing Qualcomm chips, the latest chapter in an ongoing patent dispute between Qualcomm and rival Broadcom over cell phone-chip patents,” Joshua Lipton reports for Forbes.

“Susan Schwab, the U.S. Trade Representative, declined to overrule the U.S. International Trade Commission because the conditions were not ‘extraordinary,'” Lipton reports.

“On June 7, Qualcomm suffered a serious setback when the International Trade Commission said it would ban imports into the United States of new cell phones manufactured with Qualcomm’s chips. The agency ruled that some of Qualcomm’s chips infringed on Broadcom’s patents,” Lipton reports.

On July 19, Verizon Wireless struck a licensing pact with Broadcom, agreeing to pay Broadcom a $6-per-device licensing fee, subject to certain caps, to bypass the ban and continue importing new phones. Look for the other “iPhone-less” U.S. carriers to scurry around in similar fashion. As we’ve said previously, now all they need is is a time machine set five years in the future, so they can go get a phone that’s even remotely comparable to Apple’s iPhone. 1. Now’s the part where every liberal maggot on planet earth gets in his dig at Bush. You know, how “Bush has killed thousands of innocent civilians” (even though he hasn’t), and other intelligent stuff like that.

  2. The next big announcement won’t be mobile phone providers agreeing to pay Broadcom, but Qualcomm purchasing a license for Broadcom’s patents. Unless Qualcomm is willing to wait months, if not years, for an appeal (by which time these chips will be hopelessly outdated anyway and Qualcomm’s business will have suffered terribly), Qualcomm needs to buy the license.

  3. “The next big announcement won’t be mobile phone providers agreeing to pay Broadcom, but Qualcomm purchasing a license for Broadcom’s patents.”

Nah, Qualcomm will fight to the very end before that happens. They still have options with more appeals.

Carriers don’t have options, however, as they have new phones they need to roll out as soon as possible. RAZR2, etc.

There are in fact two wireless carriers who signed on for the Broadcom licensing pact. Only one has been revealed publicly (Verizon). The “next big announcement” will be who the other carrier is.

  4. Hey Big Johnson,
Bush isn’t responsible for killing thousands of innocent civilians. But he IS responsible for the death and mutilation of thousands of American military personnel by needlessly putting them in harm’s way. But I’m sure you have evidence that it’s really the fault of Bill Clinton.

  5. Wow, stupidity is still king here.

All of you amaze me. All this time alive and you still know nothing about politics. But you all choose a side so you can feel secure and feel like you have a cause.

You know exactly what I am talking about, you use religion the same way. Your thinking is right because it makes you feel secure and that you have a purpose and a place to end up.

All you get with politics is all you have ever got. No matter the party, you still end up paying taxes and dead. No matter the religion you still end up paying taxes and dead.

Do the world a favor, shut up about your politics and your “Gods”. Try doing a better job raising your kids and building your family. Spend less time voting and defending your vote. Spend more time making sure your kids aren’t out trying to get my kids high or dead and less time at church listening to someone telling you what is not okay and what is.

Just do something great, like being a parent, working more than 40 hours a week (lazy americans) and just shutting your fscking mouths already.

No matter what you are going to die, and along the way the IRS wants a check once a year.

  6. @jarrettnewsdaily,

I agreed with you on most of your points. However, how about spending less time f*cking and making kids that need to be protected from other people’s kids and less time promoting the greatness of being a parent (even cows and tics reproduce).

Want to do something great? Slow the gratuitous breeding. At 6.5 billion, I think we’ve got enough without the likes of you muddying up the gene pool yet further.

PS: This lazy American works a full time job (40+) and runs a side business, you lazy whoever-you-are!

Do you realize that there are more than 2100 people killed in the state of California via murder every year? Where is the protest on that situation Oh Blue state? You should see the number of rapes and usolved crimes. In the last six years the number of murders where people die in California alone is over 12,000. It kinda makes the 3000+ civilians in 2001 and the 3600 soldiers seem small considering its a declared war. You need to go to http://www.fedstats.gov and see for yourself something that effects Americans here on our own soil every year. Information is a wonderful thing while ignorance is just plain obvious.

    Go Ron Paul!!

  8. It’s a — it’s, we have an amazing country, where people’s instinct, first instinct, is to help save life, and there’s a lot of peoples’ first instincts here in the Twin Cities was to save the lives of somebody who was hurtin’, and I know the people of this community thank those, their fellow citizens who did that.

“he IS responsible for the death and mutilation of thousands of American military personnel by needlessly putting them in harm’s way.”

First. We are all responsible for our own choices.

Second. Since when did Bush start the draft? As fas as I know these men and women in our military signed up on their own, and knew what they were getting in to when they did.

Third. The terrorists caused “the death and mutilation”, and THEY are the ones responsible…but I forgot, in a liberals sick mind everything is Bush’s fault.

Nice Logic. You need 1.21 gigawatts shot up your butt you crazy flux capacitor!

  10. “…but I forgot, in a liberals sick mind everything is Bush’s fault.”

Who’s at fault in a conservative’s sick mind? Oh. I forgot. Clinton and that Lewinsky girl.

Enough with the us/them this party/that party culture war already. You sound like a neo-con parrot.

I love how you say “enough”, but continue anyways with more name calling.

To answer your question correctly, its not Clinton and that Lewinsky girl, it’s just stupid people who think they are justified.

  12. mac user 47 – “Thank you Jesus for hope.”

LOL. You do realise if he were alive today they’d call him a faggot treehugging liberal terrist? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”LOL” style=”border:0;” />

BTW, there’s nothing depressing about dying once you realise just how incredible the chances of living are. I’m just extremely happy to be here, even though it’s only for a finite time.

Anyway, enough of the off-topic nonsense. Carry on….

  13. Actually, I am from Arizona.

The lazy Americans reference stems from the fact that my wife and I work 2 jobs each, and about 90% of the people we work with and come into contact with bitch about being late on rent. Then they also bitch as every 4-6 weeks we take a 3-5 day vacation.

Americans for the most part are lazy. Don’t believe me? Just go out to eat at anywhere for any meal and there are going to be lots of people feeding their faces with over portioned plates. We for the most part are even to lazy to cook for ourselves. And no going out to eat isn’t bad, but everyday or damn near is pathetic and a huge waste of your money and your health. Being a waiter/waitress in this country must be like printing money.

    cheers
