Flash-based Apple iPod video on hold?

“Although general comments from memory module makers, in Taiwan or overseas, have all said that a NAND flash-based iPod video is listed in Apple’s plans, the exact launch schedule is still under question,” Esther Lam and Josephine Lien report for DIGITIMES.

“Some memory module makers in Taiwan are saying that over the third quarter Apple has placed monthly orders for about 20 million units (in 1Gbit equivalent units) of NAND flash, a quantity that suggests that Apple is planning for additional demand, and which the module makes are attributing to the flash-based iPod video,” Lam and Lien report.

“However based on recent price trends, one flash-related sales manager at a Taiwan memory module house believes that Apple may need to postpone its launch plans for the NAND flash-based iPod video beyond the third quarter as the product would not be competitive,” Lam and Josephine Lien report. “Another flash-related sales director… noted that Apple should be able to meet its launch schedule, but may opt to introduce the device with a lower storage capacity that the current HDD version.”
