Apple Macs dominate Amazon’s computer best-sellers list; hold 7 of top 8 sales spots

“Microsoft Corp’s first major operating system release in over half a decade has seemingly done little to spur PC sales at the Internet’s largest online retailer, where Macs continue to dominate sales charts,” AppleInsider reports.

AppleInsider reports, “Two days after the consumer release of Windows Vista, Apple’s Mac line of personal computers handily maintained its lead atop Amazon.com’s best selling ‘Computers & PC Hardware’ sales chart.”

“In all, Macs accounted for 7 out of the top 8 sales slots on the hourly-updated rankings, including the top 5 spots. The top-selling Vista-enabled PC was a 13-inch Sony VIAO notebook, which captured the 6th spot. Vista notebook offerings from Toshiba and HP followed, filling the 9th and 10th spots, respectively,” AppleInsider reports.

  1. Just to be fair, Apple tends to do better in these types of lists, as they have a limited number of configs for sale. Think about it. The other vendors have dozens of configs for sale, so their total sales get spread around, moreso than Apple’s.

  2. > Vista is not hardware — Vista is SOFTWARE.
    > And it is at the TOP of the software best-sellers list!

Actually, TurboTax is at the top of the software list now. Vista Ultimate Upgrade is at #4. Considering it’s an OS upgrade version that costs $250, I suppose #4 is a decent showing. But seriously, people DO buy a lot of software from Amazon.com. During its first month of release, Windows Vista should be the undisputed #1 on the software top seller list. Except it isn’t. It looks like most Windows users are not too motivated to upgrade.

This is not surprising, since most Windows users keep whatever OS is on the PC. They upgrade OS when they buy a new PC. This is why the expectation was that customers were waiting for Vista to come pre-installed on new PCs. But there’s not too much action on the new-PCs-with-Vista front either.

Apple is going to do even better when Leopard comes to town.

  3. Stupid measurement.
Put some numbers behind the rankings.
Would you be impressed if #1 sold only 5 units, #2 – 4 units, etc.
What is the time period of this ranking? Per hour, day, month, year?

  4. And the winner of the “This Guy Needs to get a Life” Award goes to MARK who wrote:

“I’ve been following Amazon’s notebook sales daily since I bought an iBook in October 2005. Apple notebooks have consistently taken the top spot and usually #2 and #3.”

Why would anyone waste their time doing that? What is the purpose? What does it get one?
