Adobe Photoshop CS3 Universal Binary beta due this friday

“Adobe Systems Inc. on Friday will make available for download an early public beta of its next-generation graphics editor, Photoshop CS3, but will otherwise abstain from delivering pre-release copies of other Creative Suite 3.0 applications,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

Jade reports, “People familiar with the matter tell AppleInsider that Adobe chief executive Bruce Chizen will formally announce plans for the beta release during the company’s fiscal fourth quarter conference call with analysts and members of the media on Thursday.”

“The Photoshop CS3 beta, which will be posted to the Adobe Labs website on friday, will include Adobe Bridge and Device Central components, and be available simultaneously for both the Mac and Windows operating systems,” Jade reports. “People familiar with the Macintosh version of the editor confirm it to be a Universal Binary which ‘simply screams’ on Apple Computer’s new Intel-based hardware. However, they tell AppleInsider that this week’s beta will include only the standard version of Photoshop CS3.”

“In order to download the Photoshop CS3 beta, users will need a valid serial number to one of the various Creative Suite 2.0 distributions,” Jade reports.

  1. Adobe only gets bashed when they don’t pay attention to the mac, not when they do. This simultaneous release of CS3 probably has a lot to do with vocal Photoshop users who were understandably p**sed about having to work through Rosetta for so long, and let Adobe know about it.

  2. Sure, this good news – but i’m still irritated – i use the whole suite for my job – including Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks. These apps are equally slow, and will still force me to use CS2 and Macromedia under WinXP (boot camp) until Adobe makes their programmers work harder *cough*

I’m not sure what this means. What is the “standard” version of PSCS3?

  4. “More than likely, the Windows Vista version of Adobe’s CS3 will be much slower than the new universal binary for Mac OSX.”

Probably. But it will be so super shiny and pretty in it’s little Aero outfit just before it collapses under the weight of a thousand new viruses. Get a screenshot while you can.

  5. RE: ndelc

I think they mean they’re only releasing the PPC version, NOT the Universal version with Intel support.

Just please release this thing so I can buy a new machine, dammit!!!

uhhh that means its universal not just powerpc. also, i believe the standard means….cs3 comes in two flavors..standard..and premium. maybe they are only releasing the standard version for now.

    “ChrissyOne

To ndelc, just like Acrobat morphed from one app into two, Standard or Professional, it sounds like Photoshop may do the same.

To ChrissyOne, “…confirm it to be a Universal Binary which ‘simply screams’…” All you had to do was read the article.

  8. “I’m not sure what this means. What is the “standard” version of PSCS3?”

There are going to be two version of PS – standard and high end versions. The standard version is going to be for the average user such as myself who need the editing capabilities but not all the bells and whistles. The high end version will be for the “Professionals” that need all the graphic capabilities.

Good idea since there is a demand for a lower cost version.

  9. As a non-professional photographer on a budget, I am wondering whether there will be a Universal version of Photoshop Elements. I don’t recall hearing anything from Adobe about this product, which is godsend for people like me — all the functionality I’ll need at a fraction of the cost.

Others who know Adobe better can set me straight, but I can’t help being concerned that the “standard” version will wind up being Photoshop Elements at an inflated price.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about a UB of Elements?

  10. As both an Intel Mac owner and Adobe product user, I for one cannot wait to try it out. Hopefully when CS3 is released, it won’t be so buggy, we’ll Still have to wait till 3.1 for some decent performance.

Even though it’s only the standard version, it will still be a nice thing to test and give some feedback on.

  11. So, if it simply screams on MacIntel, will Adobe go dutch with Apple and Intel on an advert in the press saying how its better than CS3 running on a WinDell AMD box?

It would seem only fair after that Premiere/After Effects thing they ran several years ago.

  12. “People familiar with the Macintosh version of the editor confirm it to be a Universal Binary which ‘simply screams’ on Apple Computer’s new Intel-based hardware. However, they tell AppleInsider that this week’s beta will include only the standard version of Photoshop CS3.”

This is just poor copy editing. The “However” does imply that what follows is in contrast with what preceded it, i.e. the standard version does not scream and/or is not UB.
