Kevin Rose: Dual-battery Apple ‘iPhone’ coming in January; $249 for 4GB, $449 for 8GB

In the latest “Diggnation” (episode 74 – November 30, 2006), Digg.com founder Kevin Rose discussed some details about the oft-rumored Apple “iPhone” that he obtained via a “solid” source:

• I have a little bit of inside information on the Apple phone
• It’s coming out in January
• All phone providers will carry it
• GSM, CDMA, Sprint PCS
• It’s gonna be “small as shit”
• Operating system unknown
• They are truly doing some very unique things with the phone
• 2 batteries, one charger; one for the MP3 player portion, one for the phone
• I’ve heard about what the OS can do, it’s supposed to be pretty cool
• 2 capacities, 4Gb and 8GB at $249 and $449 respectively
• Flash memory-based
• Slide-out keyboard
• Touchscreen on the outside, I’m not sure though

Rose accurately called the 2GB iPod nano’s name, color screen, and price before its announcement and also corrected predicted the release of the 15″ Intel-based Macbook Pro shortly before its actual release.

  1. “PLEASE PLEASE let him be right again. I absolutely need a new phone, and im holding out till at LEAST macworld for the iphone. no matter what that will be….i will buy it.”

Relax, hipster, we’ll tell you when it’s ready.

  2. R, the cell carriers are just that: carriers. They’re not just after the download market and indeed that’s secondary to what they’re actually in business to do which is to provide cell phone service. That’s why they give away free phones. If Apple’s phone is unlocked it just means more money for all of the carriers.

  3. TowerTone,

your post reminded mo of that lovely old folk song:-

    And straight I will repair
    To the Curragh of Kildare
For it’s there I’ll find tidings of my dear.

P.S. I’ve resisted buying a cell phone until now, but I’m going to buy an iPhone.

  4. what I want in a fon from apple:

-tight integration with OS X apps such as iChat, Mail, Address Book, iSync, and iCal
-ability to use the fon itself as a headset while talking in iChat
-has browser that is adapted for a 320×240 pixel 2.5 inches display
-smart fon so that .doc and .xls can be read on it
    -3G WCDMA

-integration with selected iTunes play lists is great, but at the very bottom end of my needs

  5. Gregg Thurman,

I agree. IF Apple announces an iPod-based phone at Macworld, they will also announce that the iTunes Store will sell ringtones, or at least allow already purchased tracks to be used at ringtones.

  6. When it mentions that all phone providers will carry it, does anyone know if that could possibly include nextel with the direct connect feature?

mdn magic word “long” as in I’ve waited a really long time for this phone

  7. 449 seems steep until you realize it’s a phone and an mp3 player. most nice phones (razr when it was first released, etc) start near that price point. But here you’re essentially getting two devices.

  8. I’m sick of the rumors. However, since his sources have proven to be correct now and then…

“2 batteries, one charger; one for the MP3 player portion, one for the phone”

    Sweet!

Danny – I am one of those people, too, but there are some situations where I do not have my 80GB iPod with me (or do not want to take it). 4-8GB works for those situations.

That being said, if iPod-like music capability was the only real feature, the iPhone would not be appealing enough for me to buy one at that price. What I am hoping for is an OS with a menu system that works well and integration with my computer that is easy to use and allows management of everything on the phone.

  9. Kevin Rose is no idiot and he was right on with the Nano. He knows a lot of people in the tech industry. Worse case I think he’ll be half right on the iPhone.

My 2 year contract is up this month but I’m not buying or getting a new phone until I see what the iPhone is all about in January.

It should be very interesting MacWorld this year.

  10. You know, there is only one primary function an iPhone needs. The iPod. If the mp3 player is at least 1,000 songs, unlike that ROKR crap with only 100, I could see it being a hit! I’m personally not a fan of having 2 chargers, but I guess this isnt 10 years later yet.

  11. Looks like another DOA product from Apple. Why don’t they get it? Microsoft has already created fantastic smart phone features that forward-thinking phone manufacturers are implementing TODAY.

What Apple’s phone needs is Windows Mobile and Zune compatibility. Points + WMA + Outlook Mail + MSN Messenger = SWEEEEEEEET!

    Your potential. Our passion.
