No Scroll Zone: Bill O’Reilly slams Apple iPod

“Apparently sparked by the PlayStation 3 launch, conservative pundit Bill O’Reilly took off after video game culture and digital technology generally in yesterday’s Radio Factor,” GamePolitics reports. “The controversial talk show host, who advertises his program as a ‘no spin zone’ offered the following spin on Apple’s iPod:”

I don’t own an iPod. I would never wear an iPod… If this is your primary focus in life – the machines… it’s going to have a staggeringly negative effect, all of this, for America… did you ever talk to these computer geeks? I mean, can you carry on a conversation with them? …I really fear for the United States because, believe me, the jihadists? They’re not playing the video games. They’re killing real people over there.

  1. Would the faux Republicans on this board please refrain from multiple-posting with pseudonyms?
(Or at least be a little more inventive in your attempt to camoflauge your writing style).
Oh, wait, you watch Bill O’reilly.
    You are stupid.
    Never mind.

  2. My comment from digg:

    For O’Reilly, ignorance = bliss

Maybe he should tell Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Steve Case, Larry Ellison, Michael Dell and others that they are unable to carry on a conversation. Yeah, tech geeks have trouble with conversations. I understand the traditiionalist point of view, having kids myself. But most of his comments are absurd. What about his crack staff that does ALL of that “research”? Show us the numbers that prove iPods are somehow making people inable to communicate. No Proof? That’s what I thought.

It is obvious the spin STARTS at the O’Reilly Factor door. What a jackass.

  3. I frankly find Bill to be a pompus, hypocritical arse. But read his quote again: “If this is your primary focus in life – the machines… it’s going to have a staggeringly negative effect, all of this…” The iPod was an example, not the focus.

Seriously, regardless of whether video-games have some redeaming factor for military recruiting, if you look at these kids who live in front of TVs and monitors they’re social skills are pretty bad. Do you see kids running around any more? Playing group games like kickball, four-squares, or whiffleball? Kids on biks? I see far less of it than when I was a kid. And places aren’t that much more dangerous than before – we just know about it more easily.

  4. I am amazed that simply bringing up a name can cause so many idiots to surface. ie always right. I believe that they dont get the point of the conversation. Putting the self pleasures of life (machines) as the goal or focus is wrong. Spin boy was merely pointing that out. He only wants whats best for the overweight and undereducated in America. For those over priviledged who happen to live in these shores. And let’s not forget those who claim to be tolerant but show who they really are when they open their mouths.

  5. Hey g-man, that sounds like the plot from a movie from the ’80s called “The Last Starfighter.”

Here’s a blurb about it: ” In the classic 1984 science fiction movie “The Last Starfighter” — the first film where all special effects are computer generated — a teenage video game wizard from Earth named Alex is recruited to pilot a Starfighter space ship against an alien armada and save the universe from evil.”

  6. Actually, Opie, I perfectly understand the premise.
In fact, I would add the point that part of parental responsibility is to be judicious in alotting time for video games, etc. Many parents are weak.

I am NOT tolerant, when it comes to a blowhard like O’rielly, hiding bedind the “fair and balanced” and “no spin zone” facades.

It IS true, however, that social skills are suffering.

  10. I’m a conservative, but frankly Bill O’Reilly is a man in need of a purported villan or he has no ability to create a show. If there’s not some person, some corporation, or something else out there that is making news due to some stance that he doesn’t like, then he has to blow something up way out of proportion to keep his viewers happy. Because if he was a straight news guy, or even just an opinion guy, he would be finished.

Plus, he’s going a little wacky lately with claims that he is getting attacked by various publications, people, etc. Honestly Bill, the American public’s attention span isn’t big enough to care about you or anyone else for that long.

  11. All O’Reilly wants is another platform on which to stand while he promotes his books and makes more millions. Remember, he said on his show that he was going to “go after Oprah” because she never allowed him on her show. He kept publicly attacking her until she finally let him come on and promote his new book.

In short, he’s just trying to exploit what’s popular to make more money. He wants iPod fans to get in an uproar over this so he can get more publicity.

    Let it die.

    Let him die.

Ignoring him is the worst thing you can do to him.

  12. Whether or not Bill truly likes or does not like iPods is not his point.

Time to put on some critical thinking skills here.

First: The iPod is becoming a metaphor for “shutting out the world.” It is being said all the more frequently: “…so people put on their iPod’s on and ignor the world around them.”

Second: For those of you who don’t get it, this does not mean literally, people who enjoy iPods are shutting out the world and ignoring world politics, US security conserns or anyting else, it simply makes for a good metaphor that one can picture, picture people choosing to be isolated.

Third: If you don’t understand metaphor’s, then at this point, quit reading, you’ll only hurt yourself.

Fourth: Some say that metaphor’s project a stereo-type, and that is correct, as it aids in illustrating the point. Some people find this horrible, while others find this effective at making a point – and again – Bill likes to make points, thus the metaphor works.

Fifth: Finally, Bill’s point. He is using the iPod, PSIII, etc… as an example, as metaphore for our consumer lust for material entertainment, and the culture’s overall bury our head in the sand mentality, when we need to spend more time on thinking about other more important things that acutally matter in the world – like Mac’s! Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Whether you agree the youth culture is ignorant and too engrossed into their own means of pleasure, that is Bill’s arguement.

My point? I’m not saying Bill is right or wrong with his assesement, I’m merely explaining why he used the well understood iPod to illustrate his point.

If you disagree with his assesement of the youth culture, have it out with Billy Boy as that is open for debate.

If you think this is about iPods – you are ignorant.

  13. Come on people It’s fucking Bill OReilly!!! What did you expect???

Personally I feel safer when he or rush is on in the car….

Extra airbags are a good thing!!!!

To CrissyOne! I throughly enjoy your posts!!
BO a Fuck Tard??…….. Dead On!!

  14. dukemeister, I’m older than BS O’Riled-up and bought my 3G iPod the day they hit the local Mac Store. I designed/created my wife’s web site half a dozen years ago and am now doing a podcast as DLMeyer – the Voice of G.L.Horton’s Stage Page. You silly children associate any rejection of a newer technology as a sign of Old Age. Folks old enough to legally vote and drink have a few things to say about fadish children, too.

O’Riled-up is getting his just deserts from Keith Olberman and Countdown. They are eating away at his audience share.

  15. This is the same guy who yelled at a son who protested the war whose father died in the Twin Towers. He told the kid he was disrespecting his father. What the fuck did he know about the kids father? Jack shit. Bill O’Reilly is a disgusting human being.

  16. Yup. Liberals are the nice people of the earth. They care for all, are peaceful, know what’s best, blah, blah, blah, blah. Mention a republican, conservative, or GW and all the evil hate comes out. Not one of you libs posted anything that made sense as to why O’Reilly’s comments were silly. No. All we get from you is hate. You guys are a bunch of phonies. I would never trust a liberal with my life.

On the other hand, compare the comments of some conservatives. A reasoned explanation in most cases.

Liberals…phhhtttt. The real scum of the earth.

  17. who cares if libs are NICE.. what matters is they’re smart. Look what Bush has done over the last eight years. His staff do NOT understand economics, and have been lying about how they’re ‘helping’ the poorest Americans with their tax cuts.

Who do you think is going to pay for the doubling of the debt. That’s right. your kids. don’t you feel smart.

I know Billo went to a great school, but he does NOT understand economics, and for that, I think he’s a douche.

“did you ever talk to these computer geeks? I mean, can you carry on a conversation with them? …I really fear for the United States because, believe me, the jihadists? They’re not playing the video games. They’re killing real people over there.”

Geeks are lame. but who cares, they’ll never get any power.. what does this have to do with the iPod… nothing, it’s just symbolic of technology in general. So mr pro-Business is now a luddite?

    Okayyyyyy….?
