  1. Aperture is an amazing program, I use it every day, but it also needs work before it can take a significant market share. If the programers can fix the problems and then sprinkle a little Apple magic, (come up with features and workflow solutions I haven’t thought of but can’t live without) Apple can have a hit on its hands.

High expectations. One can always hope.

  2. Aperture 2.0 probably.

But I still believe the natural evolution of the product demands Aperture Server which does picture desk, digital asset management, web storefront/syndication management and workflow. In my head, it will also be developer extensible via plug-ins.

  3. They already had a press event to announce Aperture 1- they’re going to do it again to trumpet an upgrade? I don’t think so.

How about this? Suppose Apple’s been working on a real Photoshop equivalent? Everyone knows Aperture is only intended to supplement Photoshop- it’s all about streamlining workflow for photographers who take massive amounts of photos and need to produce them as quickly and efficiently as possible- it is a different animal than Photoshop.

Maybe Apple decided they couldn’t afford to wait until June ’07 (or later) for Adobe to get their act together- how many millions of $$ are they missing RIGHT NOW because no one’s going to buy a Mac Pro to run Photoshop under Rosetta? It’s now been proven that they are slower than the G5s in this crucial instance.

So, maybe they’ve learned from Aperture that they can DO this, and maybe they’ve been working on a Photoshop “substitute” – let’s not be crass and/or unrealistic and call it a “killa”- if they have built something that has even 75% of the functionality of Photoshop, perhaps with a prettier interface, that is kick-ass fast on those Mac Pros, and is aggressively priced so it’s an easy decision- so people will think, Hm, I can buy this now , buy my Mac Pro NOW (the real incentive for Apple to do this) , and still buy Photoshop in a few months if I need to– that’s what we call killing two birds with one stone.

It might be just enough to kick the sale of all of those Pro Macs and ‘Books into overdrive. There is HUGE pent up demand by now.

So, this is my theory- “Enough like Photoshop for now” program, AND Aperture 2.0 to go with it.

If it happens to turn out to be the Photoshop Killa, well, so much the better for Apple- Adobe brought it on themselves by dragging their feet.
