“Shares of Apple Computer remain a favorite at Citigroup, where analysts on Thursday told clients it’s not too late to invest in the [Mac and] iPod maker. In a research note, analysts Richard Gardner and Yeechang Lee said they continue to view Apple shares as a compelling Buy, even on this morning’s strength,” Prince McLean reports for AppleInsider.
“‘We believe that Apple is well positioned to gain at least one point of global consumer PC share annually thanks to superior ease of use, superior reliability and virus resistance, superior product design and, last but not least, the ability to run Windows on Intel- based Macs,’ Gardner told clients,” McLean reports. “‘We believe the global available market for portable digital music players is approximately three times the size of Apple’s current installed base of 45-50M units, suggesting potential for several more years of solid growth,’ Gardner wrote. ‘We also believe that investors underestimate Apple’s ability to bring innovation capable of driving regular upgrades to iPod.'”
“Gardner is also one of several analyst who doubt Mircrosoft’s rumored digital media player strategy will have a noticeable impact on Apple’s iPod business, telling clients unlikely that Microsoft could produce a device with a user experience that rivals the iPod,” McLean reports. “Over the next year, Gardner expects Apple to enter several new product and service categories, including portable media players, on-line movie downloads and 3G mobile phones that sport integrated music and photo capabilities. ‘We do not believe that these new products are currently reflected in our estimates or consensus,’ he wrote. ‘We also expect a steady stream of compelling enhancements and/or price cuts to existing products in coming months beginning at the company’s Worldwide Software Developers’ Conference on August 7.’ Citigroup maintains a Buy rating on Apple shares with a price target of $80.”

Sooner or later, reality prevails – as we have seen in Apple’s past street performance.
When the word gets out that all these new Apple customers are largely disappointed that the quality of the product did not live up to expectations, there will be a reversal of this enthusiasm that will drive the price of the stock south.
Yes, I expect profane and obscene trashing of my comments (does this tell you anything about the character of Mac zealots) and I will hear again that PowerBooks are better than Dell, or HP or some other sub-standard standard of comparsion.
But, that’s not the benchmark we should accept. We should demand ALL the quality Apple is capable of and not settle for less.
BTW, my office VAIO portable is far better quality than the new MacBooks. Too bad it’s not Tiger compatible.

These analysts seem to think Apple’s growth path will be linear. It won’t be. It’ll be geometric or logarithmic.

Hey, Pete. Don’t be too quick to say that Tiger doesn’t/won’t run on your Vaio. Now that MonkeySoft has effectively stabbed SONY in the back with the rumored Argo/XPod player, keep an eye peeled for some kind of Apple-SONY alliance in the near future. In fact, don’t be surprised if Apple elects to work with ALL of the non-MonkeySoft WMA players when (if?) the XPod ships. Of course this is all speculation, but Apple will most definitely not sit on its hands when MS enters the portable music arena. All options will definitely be on the table!

The biggest objections to my posts come from new owners of MacBooks who understandably don’t want to feel they have been taken – although Mac posts (especially Apple’s own discussion boards) abound with unhappy MacBook and MacBook Pro owners.
My argument is one thing and one thing only: QUALITY. It’s suppose to “Just Work”, remember? It’s not suppose to be overheating, making noise, warping, discoloring, or exploding – like the inferior PC brands we have no trouble dismissing as bad products
Demand quality by our buying habits it and we get it, accept less and that’s what we get.

(By the way, my Feb/2005 1.67GB PowerBook 17″ developed an intermittent problemm with the headphone jack last Christmas. I contacted Apple on Monday, returned it on Tuesday, received it back in PERFECT condition on Thursday. Would SONY would have had it back to me on Wednesday, Pete?)

No, Apple is not without its manufacturing faults, but no company that puts out hundreds of thousands of anything can be. If you live in the real world you must know that Sony more than likely has just as many problems as Apple trying to reach a Zero-Defect product release rate. I’ve had to take back two of their TV’s in the past ten years in attempts to find one that would work more than three weeks, but I haven’t beaten my breast black and blue over the issue.
Perhaps a Valium or two would help.

The Pete Peterson who fought in Vietnam was a captain in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Vietnam in 1966 and spent SIX YEARS as a prisoner of war (POW), where he was tortured and went through unspeakable horrors. He was finally released in 1973, and he was awarded a Purple Heart, the Silver Star, and the Legion of Merit.
He later went on to be elected to Congress in 1991, and in 1997 he became — in what was a highly symbolic act of reconciliation between the countries of United States and Vietnam — the first US ambassador to Vietnam when diplomatic relations were re-established.
