Microsoft demos Windows Vista on Apple MacBook Pro

At a presentation of the oft-delayed Windows Vista and Office 2007 for a group of bloggers at Microsoft HQ in Diegem, Belgium, Microsoft “actully loaded Windows Vista on a piece of Mac hardware and presented with it,” according to a brief report from UNEASYsilence.

MacDailyNews Take: Not a smart move by Microsoft. This story will help Joe Average see that his next computer should be a “Twofer” Apple Mac that can run Mac OS X and Windows Vista.

Now, Windows Vista can’t hold a candle to Mac OS X Tiger (or Jaguar, for that matter) and Mac OS X Leopard is on the way, no less. We all know what happens when someone actually tries a Mac and can compare it to Windows: they overwhelmingly choose the Mac. Is Microsoft trying to help Apple first embrace and then extinguish Windows or is this just another sign that Microsoft has lost it?

  1. If I was Bill Gates, I would want every Windows user to buy a Mac and then purchase a license of Win XP or Vista. That way I would not have to discount the OS to the WinTel vendors. i would sell directly to the user and make more money.
This is simply a business decision.
    Actually is good business decision.
Who needs Gateway, HP, Dell and Sony, when everyone already has iPods, just buy a Mac, and a copy of Windows, then they have everything they need. They don’t have to give up their investment in games, and other software that ties them to Windows.
    Simply business.
However, once they start using the Mac, and what it offers, they will eventually give up on Win XP or Vista all together, but Bill would have already made his money, and ran. But so would Steve.
    Simply Business.

  2. There is no such thing as a Microsoft Windows computer. They are a software company while Apple is a hardware company that wishes they could use their software to sell hardware. (That’s been the plan and perfectly logical to anyone who uses a Mac already.)

MicroSloth couldn’t care less what computer people use as long as it requires everyone to buy a copy of Windows. As a matter of fact, they probably make more money on a stand-alone copy of Windows sold to a Mac person than they do on whatever they license to the Dell/HP/Whatever maker. Only when it looks as though M$ is selling fewer copies of Windows and losing OS share will they separate themselves from Apple. We all THINK this is what should or will happen, but there is no evidence that is is happening or ever will.

  3. Ok… You can all throw chairs at me. (^^;)

I really don’t think Microsoft gives a rat’s a.. what you run Vista on. After all, they are a software company. If you want to call what they make software.

    Microsoft wants your money!

  4. So a lecture in Nowheresville, Belgium — and in French, no less — to a hatful of bloggers is a threat not only to Microsoft, Dell, HP, Sony but all other companies from Akrotiri to Zaire. Heads will roll for this colossal blunder!

    More purple Kool-Aid, please.

  5. MDN take:

or is this just another sign that Microsoft has lost it?

    It depends.

First, I’ll wager that MS is gearing up brutal media campaign to point out how much “better” Vista runs than OS X on Apple’s own hardware (whether it’s true or not).

And second, I wouldn’t put it past MS to have Vista look for an OS X install, then conveniently cripple it with garbageware. It’s a given MS will have to install something on the OS X side to make Vista work.

Love MS or not, they’ve always been a tough fighter on the streets.
Whatever they’re doing is aimed towards their benefit.

  6. Apple should release Panther AHEAD of schedule by fully releasing it in August at the WWDC. It would really make Windows users question why they are waiting so long for so little.

Magic Word = “cars” Thanks Pixar. A cool movie!

  7. A confident Microsoft should run Vista on the best hardware available for demonstration, which is a Macintosh. Shrinking from a direct comparison of Vista and MacOS X would be admitting defeat before the competition even begins.

Microsoft wants Macintosh owners to purchase Vista for their business and technical applications that only run on Windows. And there are numerous examples of applications that only run on Windows.

Windows and the MacOS have been compared for over a decade. You can argue that one is better than the other, but the market share is decidedly in favor of Windows at the moment.

Since cheap hardware has been in Window’s favor in the past, in theory with Apple’s adoption of Intel processors this effect should be mitigated. However, Apple would have to take 50% of the hardware market to claim 50% of the OS market, since MacOS doesn’t run on other vendor’s hardware.

Our friend Steve Jobs would have to make the strategic decision to run MacOS X on HP and Dell hardware for MacOS X to ever significantly erode Microsoft’s market share. Never say never, but it probably ain’t gonna happen…

  8. pictures in flicker is funny. where is windows vista demo photos? all I can see is that red lapster, or people enjoy eating it. so they’re not interested in windows vista anymore. that’s shame! they seem to like macbook pro more.

  9. Apple should release Panther

So time warp and multidimensional world do indeed exist.

GmJm, I can tell you who are the next two NFL Superbowl winners, send a check later in 2006 to me. Thanks.

  10. Cheap hardware has slowly become a liability for Microsoft.

All those owners of cheap Dells, HPs and so on are crying to Microsft because the crap they where tricked into buying will not really run Vista. We all know how the PC side thinks. They believe all the fault is with Microsoft.

Microsoft will kill itself in the end. They where fools to rely to heavly on cheap hardware.

  12. It struck me as odd that MS delayed Vista whilst at the same time cutting back on staff/hours. Copied from a message board:

MicroSoft has delayed releasing Vista because the laws have not been passed. Once the law has been passed, the American public will live under complete surveillance. Vista contains a full package solution, VOIP, NSA filtering and NarusInsight Intercept Suite. This is important. What is this suite? The Lawful Intercept module offers carriers and service providers compliance with regulatory requirements regarding lawful intercept. The Lawful Intercept module provides an end-to-end solution consisting of Administration, Access and Delivery functions. The Lawful Intercept module is compliant with CALEA and ETSI standards. It can be seamlessly integrated with third party products for testing/validation or as a complete law enforcement solution.

The Directed Analysis module seamlessly integrates with NarusInsight Secure Suite or other DDoS, intrusion or anomaly detection systems, securely providing analysts with real-time, surgical targeting of suspect information (from flow to application to full packets). The Directed Analyis module provides industry standard formats and offers tools for archival and integration with third party investigative tools.

  14. iMacUK:No mystery. I went url=http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ax.html]here[/url] to get the first country that started with A.

Since using Afghanistan may have led to second-guessing by readers, I chose the second one in the list. But that, too, seems to have introduced questions, though its alphabetical placement was the only reason I was conscious of. Not residing in the U.S.A., I figured it was safe enough to go to the site. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  15. I second Dennis’s comment. It is kind of funny that someone’s first reaction to seeing someone with a body mass index of about 21 or 22 (the range in which you stop having increased incidence of diabetes, high blood pressure, and the like) is that they look unreasonably scrawny!

The average American BMI is nearly 28 now. In a not of northern European countries it’s closer to 25 (the too-generous borderline between “normal weight” and “overweight” by World Health Organization standards). In Japan, the longest-lived nation, it’s around 22, or what this guy weighs.

We’re also failing to get taller at the same rate as the rest of the developed world (even if you only look at middle- and upper-class whites), which doesn’t help us look as thin they do, either. Apparently it’s the pervasiveness of junk food:

    http://www.newyorker.com/printables/fact/040405fa_fact

Oh, well. I’m pretty sure things can’t get much worse, at least.

  16. Fates & Fush,

MS can’t even get Vista’s announced features right; you seriously think they can successfully embed secret government control technology?

You’d better seal yourself in your compound bunker before the black helicopters land.

  17. Once the law has been passed, the American public will live under complete surveillance.

The US government can’t find a band of lunatic terrorists in the sparsly-populated Afghanistan mountains. Yet they’re somehow going to monitor all of their 300-some million citizens??

Controlled TV and Internet coming to a theater near you.

The US government could fully control media and Internet like they could, say, fully control every inch of US roadway. They couldn’t. The Feds would have to suppress every single vehicle, and post police at every single intersection. It’d be both a nightmare and a joke.

Now WTF does all this have to do with MS running Windows on Mac anyway?

  18. Something important to remember is that to drooling Apple fanatics Microsoft is the evil Empire, while to Microsoft each Apple machine sold is likely a copy of Microsoft Office sold (which Microsoft makes a lot more money on per unit than they do Windows.) You hate them, they want to sell you software.

This is particularly true for intel macs–there has been article after article discussing how little interest there is in the business community for switching over to the upcoming version of Office–something like single digit percentages of large corporations are even using Office 2003 at this point. Many, many intel mac users, on the other hand, will be buying the next Office to have an intel-native version.

Microsoft is going to selling lots of copies of Office to mac users, and not a few full-priced copies of Vista. Why the hell NOT demo them on macs?

  19. Uh, MDN’s take is completely retarded.

Microsoft doesn’t care what hardware you run your computer on. This is actually the other way around:

Running Windows Vista on a Mac shows WINDOWS CUSTOMERS that they can still USE WINDOWS if they want to buy X piece of hardware. (In this case, X is a Mac.)

  20. This has been Microsoft’s mentality from day number one. You don’t think Apple knows this? They’ll have something up their leeve like they always do.

What is it? Like 37 days till WWDC (I should download the countdown widget, but I’m trying to enjoy the fact that I don’t know how long it is till the almost end of summer)

  21. Having in account that Boot Camp, Parallel, the whole Mac on Intel phenomenon has just demonstrated HOW DESPERATE we were to be able to run Windows on our Macs, even if only to be able to play most recent games, I wouldn’t get that smug.

    At all.
